The silencing of Cory Voorhis in the dust-up over Obama nominee Stephanie Villafuerte
This morning's Denver Post features an angry (in a good way) article about Stephanie Villafuerte, a former deputy district attorney and Bill Ritter associate nominated by President Barack Obama as U.S. Attorney. Villafuerte appears to have had a significant level of involvement in a campaign against former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Cory Voorhis, who was accused of accessing the National Crime Information Center computer for dirt against Ritter and then supplying the info to Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez. However, she continues to avoid answering questions on the topic, and Ritter spokesman Evan Dreyer tells the Post that she may not speak up until after her U.S. Attorney confirmation.
A judge has zipped Cory Voorhis' lips.
Somehow I'm doubting Republicans will go along with that...
Although Voorhis was eventually acquitted of criminal culpability in the matter, he still lost his job. But as Voorhis told us earlier this month, he's fighting to get it back -- and he's hopeful that reports about perjury on the part of an ICE supervisor who testified against him will aid him in this quest.
The Villafuerte should help his efforts as well. So what's he think about it? He can't say -- because a judge has muzzled him.
"I was notified by my attorney yesterday that the Merit System Protection Board judge hearing my case issued a protective order that prevents me from making statements or issuing documents on this matter," Voorhis says. "It was requested by ICE attorney Robert Erbe. I haven't seen the written order, but I was notified that it came in by an impromptu telephone call. And that's all I can say."
The timing of this order is mighty interesting, to put it mildly -- and it does nothing to change the impression that powerful interests would like Voorhis to quietly go away.
