James C. Bird and young boys allegedly a very bad combination
It's a sad truth that sexual abuse and assault sometimes goes unreported for years. That's reportedly the case with 62-year-old James C. Bird -- and while there are currently four counts of sexual assault on a child pending against him, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office thinks there could be more on the way. Maybe a lot more.
James C. Bird has at least temporarily flown the coop.
According to JCSO public-information officer Jacki Kelly, Bird "befriended" brothers between the ages of 14 and 17 in 2004 after connecting with them through a church in Aurora. Cut to September, "when one of the boys confided to his mother that he'd been abusing them," Kelly says.
The mother immediately informed authorities, who obtained a warrant and searched Bird's home last week. Kelly isn't saying exactly what they found, but she says, "Based on evidence located inside of the home, investigators have reason to believe there may be additional victims."
If so, they could still be in the vicinity. Bird has reportedly lived in several parts of the metro area in recent years.
Kelly adds, "We want people to be aware that we're investigating Mr. Bird, and we'd like to hear from people who either in the past or currently have relationships with him -- and that some of the relationships might go beyond what's appropriate."
That's putting it mildly -- and while Bird is currently overseas (because he knows what's awaiting him, perhaps?), Jeffco authorities are busy preparing a welcome-home reception for him.

Jeffco investigators seeking more victims of sexual assaultJefferson County, CO. -- Jefferson County sheriff's investigators are investigating multiple allegations of sexual assault on a child involving James C. Bird (dob 120246). Bird is currently traveling abroad and has an active warrant for his arrest for four counts of sexual assault on a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The criminal allegations are that Bird had sexual contact with juveniles and provided drugs and alcohol to his victims.
In 2004 the suspect befriended a woman and her three sons after becoming acquainted through a Christian church in Aurora. During the course of their friendship, Bird began spending a great deal of time with the boys, ranging in ages 14 to 17 years old. As the months passed, the mother came to trust and appreciate the relationship that Bird had with her sons, believing that a male influence in their lives was important. Over time, the mother began allowing her boys to spend some nights and weekends at Bird's houses in Aurora and Jeffco. Bird essentially became a second caregiver, providing financial support for things like clothing, braces and many other personal items.
In September of this year, one of the boys confided to his mother that he and one of his brothers had both been sexually assaulted by Bird on multiple occasions over the years. The mother immediately reported the allegations to the authorities. On November 11th, Jeffco investigators executed a search warrant at Bird's home. Based on evidence collected from the scene, investigators have reason to believe that there may be additional victims of crimes that have gone undetected and unreported.
Bird has spent a large portion of his adult life engaging in a variety of interests and activities that involve juvenile boys. He has lived in Douglas County, Aurora and Jeffco. Anyone with information regarding James Bird is urged to contact Investigator Matt Clark at 303-271-5640.
