Pay: Unpaid

Qualifications: Excellent customer service, writing, proofreading, grammar and spelling, Microsoft Word and Excel skills. Ability to handle multiple projects. Dependable. Detail-oriented. Successful candidates will be required to pass a background check. Public relations/communications, journalism or political science major preferred. Preferred (but not required): Knowledge of AP Style, previous work in web site content management systems, familiarity with social media.

Responsibilities: Assisting with office administration and organization, research projects and writing, and other related duties and/or responsibilities as assigned or requested. The intern will experience a fast-paced, professional environment in communications, public relations and media relations, and will learn about Mayor Hickenlooper and his initiatives, Denver municipal government and public service. The intern will be trained in formal and informal training sessions and when embarking on new tasks. The intern will report to the Deputy Communications Director and will receive real-time feedback on performance, as well as a review at the end of the internship.

What it doesn't say: The intern will have to hold an umbrella for councilwoman Judy Montero (and other council members as needed) when it rains and cover puddles for her with his/her jacket; maintain the mayor's personal fleet of promotional-stunt bicycles, scooters and Segways; create and implement the entire PR strategy for the 2011 mayoral race while simultaneously creating backup plans for 2014 Gubernatorial race. Intern will also have to deal with pesky reporters from local media outlets.
