Brian Urlacher misses Kyle Orton: Sorry, Jay "Pussy" Cutler
Remember reports this past summer that Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher referred to new golden-boy QB Jay Cutler as a pussy?
Didn't know how much you'd miss him, did you?
Well, Urlacher's at it again -- although this time, he's using more polite language. Bottom line, he misses the kind of ball the Bears played back when Kyle Orton was under center. As a bonus, he called Orton "a winner" -- implying, either consciously or unconsciously, that Sweet Baby Jay, who's helmed the Bears to a 4-7 record, is something else entirely.
In the Yahoo! interview quoted in a Canadian Press article viewable here, Urlacher said that Cutler was "a great player who can take us a long way" -- nice avoidance of the p-word, big guy! He added that he still has faith in JC, but he hates "the way our identity has changed.
"We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we'd rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win," Urlacher continued. "Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that's the truth."
In the same piece, Cutler is quoted as saying Urlacher doesn't need to apologize for his comments, and the two of them had talked about his frustrations -- the kind of feelings that crop up when a team has lost four straight games (which Broncos fans definitely understand this year) and six of the last seven (which we don't -- and I hope it remains the case).
This is probably the best response Cutler can offer under the circumstances, but that doesn't mean he's necessarily a winner. And when it comes to Orton, his absence has definitely made Urlacher's heart grow fonder.
