Medical marijuana lab raided by DEA during introduction of Senator Chris Romer's doctor-patient bill

Full Spectrum Laboratories received some uninvited visitors yesterday.

Yesterday, Betty Aldworth, director of outreach for Full Spectrum Laboratories, a marijuana testing facility, was at the State Capitol to watch lab co-owner Bob Winniki testify about Senator Chris Romer's just-introduced bill dealing with the relationship between doctors and medical marijuana patients.

But before Winniki could speak, the twosome received an e-mail letting them know members of the Drug Enforcement Administration had stopped by the lab. And by the time they got back to the facility, Aldworth says, "it was full of DEA agents" and other local law-enforcement types, who spent the next several hours seizing all the marijuana testing samples they could find.

In October, the Obama administration issued a memo confirming that its Justice Department wouldn't actively pursue prosecution of medical marijuana businesses in states that had legalized the process. As such, Full Spectrum should have been in the clear -- but in an attempt to preclude any problems, the lab formally applied for analytical lab licensure through the DEA.

"We didn't need to do that, but we thought it was the right thing to do," Aldworth says. "We've worked really hard to make sure that everything we're doing is above board. We've tried to get the best advice from the smartest people about all parts of our business, and we're trying to follow their advice as well as we can. And we're trying to be engaged in the community. That's the reason we were at the Capitol. We think it's important that people know what we're doing and why we're doing it."

Such transparency didn't help with the DEA. During the agents' first visit, they "smelled marijuana, which prompted them to request a warrant," Aldworth says. The document eventually arrived, but Aldworth and company had already given the agents permission to search the premises, under the theory that they had nothing to hide.

Nonetheless, she continues, "they confiscated all of the material on site -- even test tubes filled with extraction fluid that we run on our machines."

Fortunately, Aldworth says, all of the samples sent to the lab had already been tested; it would have eventually been discarded. And agents didn't seize the equipment, which Full Spectrum leases. However, plant material used to set baseline standards for testing, provided to the lab by assorted dispensaries, was taken as well.

Aldworth, who declines to speculate about the timing of the raid, says the agents were "incredibly professional" during the hours-long process "considering what an awful experience it was." But they weren't immediately forthcoming with information about what was going on. It took some time before Full Spectrum personnel were told that they wouldn't be arrested or charged with a crime.

What happens next? Aldworth isn't sure as it applies to the DEA. But as for Full Spectrum, "we're not shutting down," she emphasizes. "We are as determined as we were at the beginning of the day yesterday to keep providing this service to Coloradans who need it. We're not going anywhere. We're still going to be here."

What the fuck? This is such bullshit. At least they aren't being charged with a crime. But seriously, why is the DEA seizing the marijuana then? It's not going to be evidence in a trial, what are they going to do with it?

Marijuana is safer than alcohol, aspirin, caffeine, ect. Its impossible to overdose on. Ive used it for 14 years, and I am healthy, happy, active and love life, not exactly the killer weed they want you to believe it is just to give them a reason to suck tax dollars out of our pockets so they can have financial security knowing that the drug war funding is continued, even though prohibition causes far more harm and actually is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year and kids have greater access to marijuana than they do beer its what law enforcement and drug cartels want, because how can they make money if people are allowed to grow it for free.

DEA is a bunch of corrupt federal agents playing G.I. Joe at the expense of the tax payer.

So much for "change" and "hope": Obama just appointed a career marijuana warrior named Michele Leonhart to head the DEA. I'm sure the timing of this is no coincidence.

No arrests made, just harrassment. I wonder if local clown DEA Agent Sweetin was involved with this idiocy: he seems to prefer molesting peaceful cannabis users to fighting real, violent crime.

Pure and simple harassment. They knew he was testifying so they did this at the exact same time just to show mmj supporters that they could. More police state tactics by our "law enforcement community". I'm sure they have the patients best interest in mind, just like AG Suthers says.

This is great news!

If the feds weren't feeling threatened by the direction this country is taking they wouldn't have to resort to such underhanded scare tactics.

Desperation is the last refuge of the defeated, and acts like this will engender support from people who may not necessarily support the pro-marijuana movement but still believe in the rights of states and resist a totalitarian federal government.

To the DEA - keep acting like a bunch of power-hungry assholes in the public eye and watch how quickly your empire desolves...

What a despicable farce cannabis prohibition is. Anyone who's been paying even the slightest bit of attention knows that alcohol is FAR more dangerous and deadly. Watch out they were not wearing uniforms and did not have any insignia visible while wielding their weapons for the public to see. This is a fear tactic and must be stopped. What in Gods name is going on. The DEA's own administrative law judge said that marijuana is one of the safest substances known to man. That was 1988. Nixons own Commission on Marijuana recommended that Possession of Marijuana for personal use no longer be an offence and that causual distribution of small amounts not involving profit likewise not be an offense. That was 1972. The majority of the American people suppport a persons right to use medical marijuana. What happened to a government for the people and by the people.

What makes me angry about this is the fact that, Full Spectrum Laboratories, and I as well as many others, were working on a program to help the indigent medical cannabis patients and now the DEA steals their medicine? This is absolutely ludicrous and a sure sign of the DEA’s insanity. This is identical to keeping insulin from a diabetic, the result is death.

If there were no medical efficacy than why are numerous companies and governments moving forward with their patents and medications? Look at US patent 6630507 titled ‘Cannabinoids As Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants.’

In its abstract it states ‘The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.’

If We The People continue to allow this kind of violation of our rights we will soon be living under a totalitarian dictatorship where the only rights you have will be decided by the ruling elite!!!!!!!!!

All local governments need to reaffirm their rights under the 10th Amendment and start taking back the Republic envisioned by the Founders.

Why would this lab be done? Because nobody is ever going to send them squat ever again?

I am pretty sure that growers and dispensaries are able to obtain test results anonymously by getting on their webiste and entering a preselected code.

Dollars to donuts that the lab be back in business tomorrow, since they still have expert labor (the number one priority!) and capital equipment.

I think this "raid", with no arrests, is better described as a media stunt by the DEA to act tough. Yes, they are barking at the end of their bureaucratic leash, and yes, they are desperate (to maintain their level of funding at the bitter end of a completely failed drug war).

I lived with cancer and fear for many years, thankfully i had a wonderful doctor who stood up to the courts and told them i was directed to leave america, because of the social and political climate, that was keeping me from the much needed care available in 80% of the free world! What you are all failing to realize is that nowhere in the amendment does it allow for this type of lab. Plain and simple. The lies and hypocrisy from our government and the DEA have made anyone with a lick of sense thoroughly nauseated. The bottom line is marijuana should be legal for adults, period. I challenge any opposing knuckle head to explain why the most innocuous conscience altering drug should not be legal for responsible adults. For fucks sake, you can overdose and die by drinking too much water. In my sixty years, I've never known of any case where someone overdosed and died from marijuana. Our laws and government are completely insane concerning this issue.

A Decent Society Protects its Most Vulnerable

There are 15,000 people in Colorado presently fighting cancer with chemo therapy, etc.; 15,000 with HIV / AIDS; 6,500 with MS, 7,500 with Parkinson's; 50,000 with Rheumatoid arthritis, etc. a long list of very sick people, who might obtain therapeutic relief by using cannabis.

Yet, all of these sick and dying people combined do not equal even 5% of the population.

According to the CDPH&E there are 20,000 patients in their registry eligible to use medical cannabis products. This equals less than 1/2 of 1% of our population, a very small number.

It is cruel to deny these most vulnerable among us from using the medicine they want and feel they need.

It is an ugly measure of our society, that we send armed security agents to prevent these poor souls from trying to get healthy and to deny them their medicine.

I pray; there but for the grace of God go I.

Everyone calm down. This lab was operating in a grey zone, and they knew it. That's why they emphasized that they were asking everyone they could how to do it right. The DEA was told not to raid MMJ patients or dispensaries, but this lab doesn't fall into either category. Yes, this was a mistake by the DEA, but it doesn't signal a wider crackdown or even a betrayal of MMJ patients by Obama.

I am seriously considering Canada as well, I am disgusted that my tax dollars go to ruining my own life by way of the war on drugs, they seriously want me to pay the salaries of the people who are hunting us down because we use an herb? Especially when its common knowledge that not only is marijuana safer than other drugs but its medicinal and helps people as well and isn't even capable of killing anyone. But this preaching doesn't matter, because its all supposed to be this way for a reason, a reason most would not even believe.

You want to know why and how the powers that be can do such wrongful things just watch this movie, it isn't all factual, but it sure does point out that we are all slaves in a free market that have been lied to and manipulated for the gain of the elite.

I just moved here from Dallas, Texas. Denver is a really nice place. I had visited most of Colorado before as a vacationer but had not really seen Denver until now. Very nice town. I'm looking forward to living here.

The reason I left Dallas to move to Denver is because Denver seems to be the most progressive city in the most progressive state in terms of intelligent marijuana laws.

I have come here to your town to spend my money and invest here and buy a house here and lease a building here and hire your citizens here to provide my livelihood and theres by growing and selling the very best alternative to alcohol and many other medications, namely marijuana.

I have three college degrees and I have a clean criminal record. I will only hire non-felons in my business. I am already working here in pitching in on helping the hungry here in Denver.

Liberal laws and even total legalization of marijuana is the choice of most intelligent people who have carefully studied the issue. If you're still anti-marijuana, you may need to look at the simple facts, lots of research has been done leading to so many states' legalization of medical marijuana. A good place to get some facts is Wikipedia's article on "medical marijuana".

Denver and all of Colorado will not regret it's progressive attitudes towards medical marijuana.

(I do think, though, it would be in the best interests of absolutely everyone if the dispensaries would tone down the advertising. A sign simply saying "420" should suffice.

Remember, some 25-30% of the people are not open minded about medical marijuana - let's not shove ourselves in their faces with big white and green signs with "marijuana" and pot leaves appearing. Use your brains.)

effectively slapped down the MMJ lobby and created censorship by intimidation. The alleged cultivator may be stooge. This may be Watergate all over again.
