Mile Highs and Lows: Metro Cannabis Inc.

As Colorado's medical-marijuana industry grows, marijuana dispensaries of all types and sizes are proliferating around the state. Some resemble swanky bars or sterile dentist offices; others feel like a dope dealer's college dorm room. To help keep them all straight, Westword will be offering a no-holds-barred look at what goes on behind these unusual operations' locked doors in "Mile Highs and Lows," a regular online review of dispensaries around the metro area and beyond. (You can also search Westword's directory of dispensaries for one near you.)

This week: William Breathes reviews Metro Cannabis Inc.

Metro Cannabis Inc.
4101 East Wesley Avenue, Suite 1, Denver

www.metrocannabis.org

Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m., seven days.
Owner: "Stan"
Owner's statement: "The mission of Metro Cannabis is to provide high quality medicine and care to all patients in need, in a safe, secure and comfortable environment."
Opened: November 2009 in current location.
Raw marijuana price range: Herb $6 to $25 a gram, $65 for an eighth of an ounce.
Other types of medicine: Edibles (cookies, brownies, tea), hash, pre-rolled joints, THC pills.
Patient services and amenities: Complimentary massages, free consultations, doctor referrals as well as referrals for other services available in the community.

Our take: I'm a sucker for advertising. All signs point to it: I bought my bedroom furniture from Jake Jabs and my car from John Elway, I own an iPhone and I'm even obsessed with Mad Men. So when I saw an ad for Metro Cannabis promising a selection of more than 45 strains of pot "at any given time," faithful advertising sheep that I am, I was soon on my way to the small office building in southeast Denver that houses the dispensary.

Walking in off the street late one evening (as advertised: no appointment necessary, and open until 9 p.m.), I quickly breezed through Metro Cannabis's paperwork. The waiting room had a doctor's-office vibe, complete with uncomfortable chairs, a water cooler, magazines on the coffee table and CNN on the TV. The only things that suggested I was in a dispensary were the corny pot posters on the wall and a guide to different strains near the receptionist. After a brief wait, I was led to one of several pot counters set up for patient privacy, according to the bud-tender.

And for patient pleasure? A truly impressive variety, stored in jars in a glass case at the counter, broken down by quality and price in a way that's extremely easy to understand -- even if the broad selection means that the herb comes from outside vendors. There was compressed schwag for under $10 a gram in the back left corner, with higher-end strains, like the $25/gram Sour Diesel, in the front right; whiteboards on either side of the counter give a price breakdown for every strain, from a gram up to an ounce.

The THC capsules -- kiff (shaken resin glands from the bud) put into gel capsules -- were great for headaches, the bud-tender said. There was also the advertised "medical-grade hashish" for a mind-blowing $50 per gram. I'm a huge hash fan and this stuff looked good, but $50 for Bubba Kush pressed hash is steep. Before I could get overwhelmed by the possibilities, the helpful tender asked my likes and dislikes in strains, growing techniques and price ranges. After about ten minutes of talking over his suggestions and other strains I'd heard about, I decided on a few in the $18-to-$25 range. I'm not a pot snob, but I skipped the lower-end offerings: Seeing Mexico-grade schwag brick weed in a dispensary seemed slightly odd, even if part of me did want to buy some, roll it into a Swisher and crank some DJ Screw.

On the higher end, Medical Cannabis had a hydroponic Sour Diesel, which looked decent in the jar and had a very strong Sour D smell, even if the gram I took home seemed to lose some of its stink. But after I broke it up, ground it up and threw it in the bong for a few rips, I found the tangy lemon taste was there, though not as strong as in other soil-grown cuts I've tried. For the price, it could have been flushed a bit better (my gripe with a lot of hydro herb), but the heavy sativa high, that feeling of a five-pound weight on my brain, sank in immediately.

If you like a good indica-heavy strain, the $20/gram Mango might be a better bet. Apples and oranges, sure, but the Mango was soil-grown, better flushed and much better crystallized. Though it smelled a little like hay from being improperly cured, breaking open the buds revealed their true, sugary-sweet smell. The taste was light and fruity, without the chemical perfume that over-fertilized herb can carry, and it gave me a nice, relaxing high. After "testing" it, I sat on the couch with my dog in my lap, spacing out to ESPN for about an hour and a half. I also snagged some outdoor purple kush for $20 a gram. The kush had a dark, almost grape scent and was pot-naptime potent -- probably the second best bang for your buck in the shop.

But the highlight of my purchases was the lemon Trainwreck doobie for $7. I burned the buttery-lemon-tasting J before heading off to Teppanyaki with my girlfriend (on a two-for-one advertisement, mind you) and found myself high as a kite, yakking to the people dining at the hibachi around us about the highs and lows of iPhone ownership and taunting the chef to add more butter to the fried rice -- then cleaned my plate of everything.

The wide range in both strains and prices is reason enough for people to sample what Medical Cannabis has to offer; although the setting is sterile, the clinical vibe isn't overwhelming, and more critical patients may find it comforting. Both the variety-hound and the price-conscious medicine shopper will leave here happy. The only people who might be disappointed are those looking for more of a homegrown touch to the herb -- but those people tend to grow their own. And probably don't pay attention to advertising.

William Breathes and the Wildflower Seed are the pot pen names of our two alternating medical marijuana dispensary reviewers. Read their bios here.

I love the sour diesel reviews! It's my absolute favorite strain so I like knowing which places carry a good sour d.

It would be more helpful if one could track the growers behind the good/bad versions and which dispensaries they're currently dealing with. I had a favorite version that I got at a certain dispensary and one day came in an it was gone! They told me the name of the place the grower went, which is the place I now get it at, and I think it's the same one but you can never be sure. Besides what if the guy goes somewhere else again and this dispensary isn't nice enough to give me the deets?

Maybe growers should go by monikers that they can stamp their product with that way their identity remains anonymous and we can keep track of stuff like William mentioned - people that don't flush enough, etc.

William Breathes says:

FWIW, the Sour D they had was listed with the Reservoir Seed Co. genetics of "Mexican Sativa x Chemo" on the label.

The Mango was "Afghani x KC-33".

$ 25.00 a gram for Sour Diesel? $65.00 for an 1/8th? Pathetic and sad, especially when you consider that very sick patients are actually paying these extortion-grade prices.

One of the very positive results of the Denver Green Rush has been a slow but steady leveling of prices: it is now possible to acquire premium medicine for between $250-300/ oz., if you shop around and aren't suckered in by rip-off artists like these. The very fact that these bozos sell brick weed should be a huge signal: they do not care about quality meds at a decent price. Do NOT let opportunistic shysters take your hard-earned money!

Thanks for the review: I will never, ever shop at this dispensary.

Yeah the brick weed is weird! I wouldn't go to a dispensary that sold it. Local weed only, please! Our weed needs one of those "Native" bumperstickers haha.

But as I'm sure you know, $65 for an eighth of D is actually a good rate (if going to a dispensary) right now. I usually see it for $75 an eighth. Insane, but hopefully the prices for all the strains will continue to come down.

And these bozos in local gov't are worried about patients turning around and reselling on the streets. For what, twice the street price? If you're going to buy weed illegally wouldn't you just go to a regular dealer and pay the regular $50/eighth?

Also FWIW I've been to a place called Higher Health Medical (right near I25 & Mississippi near Wash Park, Pub on Pearl, etc) that seems to specialize in Sour Diesel. I guess that's all they grow, though they sell other strains too, and they also make some really great edibles from it. They have these toffee cracker things that you can't taste the bud in at all (though you certainly smell it and feel it). I'm a Sour D newbie, but I was very pleased with the edible I got and the free joint with purchase.

And no I don't work for them or anything, just liked their place.

Channing says:

They sell brick...wtf? And by those prices, they don't grow their own- they're resellers and have to jack up the price to make profit.

I've been there and they have thick eastern European accents. Possibly associated with organized crime, especially if they're reselling brick. There are rumors of a "Russian Mafia" type crowd in Denver running dispensaries. This is the kind of place that gives credence to reefer madness articles like this one today: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/22176508/detail.html

I'd stay far away from this one, friends.

Best Sour D is at the Boulder Medical Marijuana Dispensary on 30th and Pearl behind Ras Casas. Definitely the strongest I have smoked in the metro area and intense diesel smell to the point of having an aroma like Chemdawg. Owners says a chick grows it small batch.

65 an 1/8th? nothing is worth over 55. There is no reason anyone should sell it that high. and by the way, I know where you can get Mexican Sativa from the Mex x chemo cross diesel

SAMUEL,CHANNING and JIMMIE:

I totally agree with every thing you said in all your postings!

If you think these prices and procedures are bad now; just wait until The D.C.C or Sen. Romer propose their Regulations and Amendments!!!

PRICES FOR QUALITY MEDICINE IS GOING TO GO THROUGH THE ROOF!!!MOST OF US ONLY WANT QUALITY AND NOT BRICK WEED(been there done that) AND WE ARE WILLING TO PAY REASONABLE PRICES FOR IT;AND JIMMIE IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT IN SAYING;" nothing is worth over 55 dollars an eigth" AND WE PAY MORE FOR IT!!!

CHANNING IS ALSO CORRECT ABOUT THE" RUSSIAN MAFIA TYPES" I'VE BEEN THERE AT LEAST 6 TIMES AND THEY ALL HAVE RUSSIAN OR "EASTERN EUROPEAN ACCENTS!! WHY, MAYBE THEY ARE RUSSIANS OR EASTERN EUROPEAN? THIS DOESN'T MAKE THEM BAD, BUT I'D RATHER GIVE MY HARD -EARNED MONEY TO AN AMERICAN AND ESPECIALLY A COLORADAN!!!

SAMUEL(MY MAN)EVERY THING YOU POST IS AWESOME!!! YOU'RE KINDDA A HERO OF MY BECAUSE I CAN TRUST IN YOUR WISDOM TO TELL THE TRUTH AND WHOLE TRUTH!!! YES, I WILL SHOP AROUND TO FIND THE $250-$300 AN oz.

Brick Schwag??? Let us all pass on dispensaries that offer this please. Help keep the money out of the Mexican cartel's pocket. If you buy brick, or shop somewhere that does, you hate America and you support terrorism.

Attention real colorado mmj patients:

Rob Correy is a former violent felon himself. CTI does not have the interests of the patients in mind they just want legal pot, I have proof . The person who was bearing your needs in mind all along was sen. Romer. I have documented proof of this to and am willing to come forward with it. But Rob Correy and CTI are filled with dangerous people that will try to kill me if i step forward with the truth. I implore you to please cooperate with him in putting into place non-restirictive regulations before they just reverse ammendment 20 all together. We need compromise although a few dispensaries may go out of business most can easily afford the fees as many make more than $15,000 in profit every week. And only roughly 14% would go out of business from the "felony charge" rule.

If you need more information about the intentions of CTI contact C3 initiatives, A not for profit that formerly employed the leaders of CTI, TImmothy Tipton and Erin Marcove both posters here. Ask C3 about all the money they stole from employees and all the mmj distributors they ripped off. Ask how Tim and Erin then gave what was supposed to be mmj to their non-patient friends and never had any for patients. All of the members of CTI have similar histories.
I have here an email from one member Gregory K. Seaman, that's been forwarded around the office which conclusivly proves CTI does not have patient interests at heart.

SUB: FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW: Illegal dope hurts us all
Just to let you know that all of your arguments about the regulation of
cannabis are based on false impressions that have been pounded into us by
the drug war propagandists. The dealers will be dealers wether it's
illegal or not. I'm sure you realize this. The only hope of commercial
prices coming down is if all restriction of any sort are eliminated
immediately. The current proposal only forces patients to get their
medicine through a few large operations that will not be doing anything to
reduce their profits to benefit any patients. They're only hoping that the
government steps in and forces you all to get you medicine from a select
group of people so that they make more money. There's nothing in these
rules that will make medicine any less expensive, more available or better
quality for anyone. Only complete retraction of prohibition is going to do
anything to help. If you have any knowledge of the prohibition of alchohol
in the 30's you know that this is true.

We need the support of everyone interested in their rights as Americans.
Please support the end of prohibition.

Gregory

CTI is trying to convelude your rights as a sick Coloradan that has gone through all the right steps to be a mmj patient with the rights of perfectly healthy jackals to steal your medicine causing the price to go up to you. Ignore their e-mails instruicting you to clog up the system with complaints and educating you in how to do it. If you listen to them we will lose our rights.

Robbert J Correy has been nearly disbared in California because of illegal gun and sexual assualt charges, he forced himself on a narcoleptic. As a member of CTI Correy has comited numerous ethical violations and should be disbarred from practice not only in this state, but the entire US. This man clearly could not have your interests in mind.

The only person looking out for you, the patient right now is Sen. Chris Romer. Because this whole time he's been the only one who listened to our problems and tried to help. Please for the sake of our rights stop the protests and try to help come to a compromise with Sen. Romer. He's given us many concessions already in his old bill, such as the right to mass grow and business licenses for dispensaries, lets just try to be nice and supportive to get him back in support of his old bill.
