• (sorry for the duplicate post if you've seen this; I should have waited until this story was posted) Everything went off smoothly. This scene (of law enforcement being compelled to return medicine seized from patients and caregivers) has been repeated all too many times. CTI proposed an automated hotline for law enforcement to determine patients' status months ago, but this obvious solution is absent from the two bills before the General Assembly (i.e. SB109 and HB1284). The State of Colorado has already accepted millions of dollars from patients, which according to the Constitution were to be "... reasonable fees to pay for any direct or indirect administrative costs associated with its [the CDPHE's] role in this program". The CDPHE has set a fee of $90, which is out of all proportion to the cost of issuing a non-photo, paper ID. The General Assembly and CDPHE ahould implement a patient-verification hotline for law enforcement immediately (AND reduce the patient fee to $40 or less per annum) so that patients and caregivers are not dragged through the courts. Colin's victory yesterday came at the expense of an enormous amount of wasted time -- his, his attorney's, and that of the many public servants involved in this case. There must be better things for the District Attorney Chambers and the Sheriff's Office of Arapahoe County to do than to file charges which cannot be substantiated and to seize medicine which must then be returned.
