Westboro Baptist Church haters drowned out by social-media-fueled forces in Boulder: Does God hate Facebook?
The infamous clan of gay-hating, anti-Semitic demonstrators of the Westboro Baptist Church kept its promise to harass schools in Boulder Thursday -- an almost rare follow through for the group that appears to have found their obnoxious presence garners about as much attention as not showing up at all.![]()
The man who loves to hate: WBC pastor Fred Phelps.
But this time, the group's messages of hate were drowned by a successful counter-protest of students and others organized through Facebook. As the Boulder Daily Camera reports, the WBC picket line outside Boulder High School was dwarfed by a much larger demonstration of peace, love and acceptance.
The lovey dovey stuff -- it's not a far cry for liberal Boulder. But as the hate group is poised to continue a three-day tour in metro Denver, day one suggests their hate mongering is losing steam.
Kameron Martinez, a freshman at Metro State, organized the counter protest through Facebook earlier this month. The event, which plans counter protests at more than a dozen supposed Westboro destinations, has lined up more than 4,000 potential attendees.
Check out the rest of WBC's protest schedule and the Camera's day one videos below:
