The Clinic Alternative Medicine warms up Colfax

As Colorado's medical-marijuana industry grows, marijuana dispensaries of all types and sizes are proliferating around the state. Some resemble swanky bars or sterile dentist offices; others feel like a dope dealer's college dorm room. To help keep them all straight, Westword is offering a no-holds-barred look at what goes on behind these unusual operations' locked doors in "Mile Highs and Lows," a regular online review of dispensaries around the metro area and beyond. (You can also search our directory of dispensaries for one near you.)

This week, William Breathes reviews the Clinic Alternative Medicine.

Our take: I finally bought ganja on East Colfax. Legally, that is.

I've avoided going to dispensaries on Colfax for some time now. Not because of any paranoia about my safety, but because I didn't want to perpetuate those tired clichés about our city's most famous and infamous thoroughfare, and how you can get anything you want along the 26-mile-long strip. But after a friend showed me the Sour Diesel from the Clinic Alternative Medicine, I figured the time had come to brave the 'Fax.

The Colfax location is the second for the Clinic's owner, who's converted what had been a bungalow-style home and later a veterinarian's office into a clean, comfortable wellness center with a nice waiting area and a bud bar, plus rooms for massage therapy, chiropractic work and acupuncture. Although the outside has that seemingly obligatory green color scheme, the cozy interior is painted in more mellow tones. The space even feels somewhat homey -- though not in that weird "What am I doing in this person's home?" way.

After watching a few minutes of a snowboard film while waiting for a staffer to copy my paperwork, I was called back to the bud bar, which occupies a former bedroom and features a Plexiglas wall back-lit with green lights. Because it was my first time at the Clinic, the bud-tender, Rick, walked me through all the offerings. A whiteboard on one wall had the price breakdown for the ganja; a smaller board gave the prices for hash and kief. Next to the bud bar was a display fridge full of edibles -- including some unique ganja-infused soup crackers. The bud case held about twenty strains of herb separated by sativa and indica, as well as a handful of strains of hash and hash oil; a smaller shelf up top had the dispensary picks, including some Ice Princess and that Sour D. I opted out of the otherwise great-looking Ice Princess because it was near the bottom of the jar; the Grape Ape, Crystal Chunk and Super Skunk also looked good. In fact, the Crystal Chunk was my top pick -- until I saw some delicious Jack Flash nearly glowing in a jar.

I was impressed that Rick put up with my sniffing through more than half the jars and my barrage of questions. And after my purchase, the two of us started talking about the state's new medical marijuana measures. I explained how HB1284 was forcing my caregiver to drop me as a patient, giving me little option but to start searching for a dispensary to sign up with -- a difficult task, since it's tough to tell which businesses will still be standing three months from now. According to Rick, the Clinic is one of only fifteen or so dispensaries to have received its Denver license; while he acknowledged that some dispensaries will close, he said that the Clinic has its ducks in a row and is looking to take on more patients.

I'd been concerned that if I signed up with one dispensary as my caregiver, I wouldn't be able to go anywhere else, but Rick said he didn't think that was the case. A second Clinic staffer confirmed this and said that while a patient can sign up a dispensary as his caregiver, allowing it to grow for him, the patient would still be able to shop at any dispensary he chose. That made me feel better about my status as a patient. So did the split eighth of pre-98 Bubba Kush and Jack Flash that I bought from the Clinic.

As I've said before, Jack Flash is one of my all-time favorite strains, and this cut reminded me why. Burnt-orange hairs wiggled their way around the bud of the pine-green crystal-slathered goodness. When I broke open the herb, a powerful, spicy kick with a fruit-punch-and-citrus smell tickled the inside of my nose, and smoking the buds produced a wonderfully fragrant silver smoke. The taste itself was lightly spicy and pleasantly bitter. Jack Flash has always been a good strain for my appetite because of the haze genetics, and I found this one to be slightly psychedelic and relaxing without being overpowering.

When I opened the jar of Bubba Kush, a cross between Bubblegum and a Kush variety, it smelled like a new set of tires with a faint mothball finish. (Funny how things that sound unappealing to most people can be mouth-watering to pot nerds.) The sample wasn't trimmed well, but I could see amber-colored trichomes covering the chunky, dark-green flower. The smoke tasted thick, like hash, but with a molasses-like sweetness to the finish. Although I expected a bit more flavor, I was still impressed with the backache-relieving and sofa-locking strength of this Bubba Kush.

That there looks like OG haze, not any sourD. And I can PROMISE that the person who grew this bud was paid about 6-8 dollars per gram, and the store owners charge upwards of 20 per gram to the patients. Most dispensaries are just middle men, and people taking advantage of patients for quick money while its still here. Most of them DO NOT produce the high quality, top shelf strains. That I know for an undoubted fact. I also know for a FACT that many places in Boulder are getting shipments of cheaper, not so good medicine from Northern California and selling it for three times what they pay. And in turn, they are now less likely to support local growers and purchase from people growing in CO. This whole thing is a game, a scam, a con, and it has to end with full legalization. Personally, as a grower whose been in it for over five years, I would rather go back to get my Masters and PHD than stick around in this fake, toxic, absurd environment they are calling Medical Marijuana.

To All SHOP OWNERS: If you want to play games with people like you are, then you will eventually pay the price. You may have a handle on profits now, but when the big dogs come in with their billion dollar bankrolls, and PHD certified staff, you will all be out of luck, and out of this industry. I, for one, am going to be one of those PHD's that will eventually join up with a conglomerate and stomp all over your pathetic, money grubbing ways. Be prepared to go bankrupt trying to compete. The clock is ticking.

@ SourDmyass. You hit the nail on the head my friend. All of these dispensaries are claiming to only sell 'Top Shelf' medicine while only buying bottom shelf rookie product or imported schwagg.... they do not care if it is organic or pesticide free, only that the price is right. I recently saw a pickle jar full of brick weed for sale at a dispensary on Federal Blvd.... In my opinion most of this new regulation sucks but is obviously necessary to keep the jokers and idiots out of the way. Unfortunately a lot of good growers, who are passionate about their craft, are going to be forced out or headed underground which will come at a loss for real patients in need of quality medicine.

Correction: I should not have said "all dispensaries" are buying schwagg and beating up the growers on price.... But there certainly is quite a few for sure.

SourDmyass I can PROMISE you that The Clinic is no middle man and grows a majority of all their own high quality, top shelf strains and not getting any cheap shipments. If you read carefully and do some research (both good skills to have if you want to get your PHD) the article says that the Clinic is one (or 2 since they have 2 locations) of 15 dispensaries to have their Denver dispensing licence under the HB1284 bill. Part of the bill states that you must grow 70% of your own product to qualify for the licence so obviously they're growing most of their own product. Go rank and spew venom on some other ghetto dispensaries. The Clinic is legit with legit quality strains.

Cheers WB! I'm glad you enjoyed the experience.

It's good to know that I wasn't talking the Clinic up just because it was the first place I visited after my doctor's recommendation.

Your review made me think of something else.

I know you said you didn't go for the Ice Princess because it was getting to the end of the jar, but I wonder if that's such a bad thing. I know I've opted out for the bottom mini-buds of a jar. However, if you think about the way a pollen catcher works on a nice grinder, do you suppose the bottom of the jar would contain more fallen trichomes and such?

I'm going to take a look next time I'm in to see if this might be the case.

Anyway, I'll have to check out the Jack Flash!

P.S. I think that you're off by $5 on their pricing. It's $45 for "members" and $50 for "non-members".

Even for $5 more it's fantastic pricing for fantastic goods.

Every time i go here i'am very pleased with what i get. I always buy an 1/8 and a joint.

First let me say the joints @ a price of $10 are some of the best in town. If $10 seems too much for a preroll it's not. They only roll the best of the best.(not like other stores rolling up some house crap they could not sell). I have even seen Grape God Bud prerolls one time.

Now for the bud review. I have not had a indica i did not love. All i can say is i take a lot of weed naps when on this stuff. The Afghani Kush blows me away. It tastes just like it smells. The Grape God Bud is amazing of course, and I see they have some in so I will be going in today to pick some of that up and i'am not even in need right now.

As for the sativas i'am not that big into sativa but the Sour D is one of my favorites, and this place has the best. The CINDERELLA 99 is also out of this world. I hope I can get my meds from you guys forever, because you guys are truly here for the patients and not out to make a quick buck. Well as i said when i was in last time I LOVE YOU GUYS and see you soon.
