You aren't anybody to make such judgments.

Maybe you had a speeding ticket or got caught loitering? Maybe you hit someones car and ran off without filing a police report. Maybe you witnessed a murder and didn't say anything to anybody. Are such events any or less "worse" than violating a statute which says, "Don't sleep with minors?" They're all neutral events. Neither good nor bad. They just are. If the girl he was with didn't file a claim (report) against him and tell the police, "He had sex with me against my will", then what's the problem? No party was injured, no fraud was committed. The fact is, there was no rape, there was no violation of Common Law. How many people here know the difference between Statute Law and Common Law? How many people reading this know that all law is contract? I say all this because people need to start thinking for themselves. You are all free human beings, capable of making your own decisions and creating your own lives. But for whatever reason, most of us decide we'd rather act like adolescents and criticize others actions. It's much easier than critical thinking. Some of you think, "I feel bad for this guy. He deserves the punishment he got." Well, you know what?... I feel sorry for anybody who thinks that way. It's obvious where your spiritual alignment is. You talk bad about him and yet you're the ones with emotional problems. It goes with the saying, "What you hate about others is really what you hate about yourself." Everything is a mirror reflection of you.

• I new Alex when I was a kid for a few years. He was my mom's boyfriend. We even lived with him. He was a great guy and passionate about life. I have no doubt in my mind that he is guilty of what he did, but I also don't agree with the statutes/bylaws at large saying it was illegal. If the girl was comfortable with it and agreed to have sex, then who cares. That's her right. Other people put their nose into his and her business.

• I am a former karate club member, and knew both Tinsley and the girl very well. He was my sensei, and she was my best friend. He made a mistake, and she did as well. She is not just simply the victim that saw nothing coming, she acted as well. No one in this situation was helpless. And unfortunately, more than just the two were hurt. I feel sympathy for his wife, because she was a wonderful sempai and woman. She did not deserve this. I feel sympathy for him, because though he made a mistake, he does not deserve to be talked about like this. He made a mistake and will be punished. It is not someone�s job, who knows nothing of the girl or him or the situation, to persecute him. Believe me, I am as angry and upset as anyone could be. My dojo is gone. However, I just want to clarify that not only were the ESL students adults as you mention, but that Alex was also a student himself at that time. • Sorry to break it to all you but this is not Alex's first "mistake" with a student. While we were married he cheated multiple times with 'english as a second language' students at Northridge. Got one of them pregnant. The only difference then was they were of legal age. He may not be an evil person but I would definately not classify him as a "Good" person but very charming when he wants. This pattern of his started long ago.Yes he is on his third marriage and yes I left him because I lost count and got tired of supporting him and his affairs. This was quite a surprise even for me.

• It's been many years since I was in Tinsley's class, and hearing this was a horrible shock. I do think the tone of this article is tasteless and in bad form. I knew Tinsley-sensei personally. He was the adult I went to to talk with, and share stories with. He was the older brother I never had. He never once made any sexual advances, or any overtures. He was always polite, and the boundaries were never overstepped. He taught us because he genuinely loved teaching. He worked with us, he kept up with our lives, and in the case of several friends of mine (both male and female), myself included, we kept in touch after we graduated. He's a friend as well as a teacher. I think Tinsley made a horrible mistake in many ways, but he is by no means a bad person, and neither is this girl. He turned himself in, he admitted to what he did wrong. Let him pay his debt to society and continue his life. • Set it straight, You say "shame on you" to Rain, and yet you don't KNOW that Mr. Tinsley didn't manipulate others. Yes the percentages are bogus and written with great emotion, much like your post as one of the "bizillion" women he showed his good guy face to. Maybe the face he showed you was that of a 'good man' but I also saw regular creepy and manipulative behavior from him. Yes, personally. He would make inappropriate sexual comments just to get a reaction, and keep pushing and pushing. He made an unwanted sexual advance on a friend, actually touching her inappropriately. When called on it he said 'I'd rather ask for forgiveness than wait'. There was definitely a darker side. And he told me a number of times about the multiple times he had been married/divorced. Unless of course he was lying, or being manipulative and made it up as an excuse for being so inappropriate. (not that that has any bearing on the creepy nature of this relationship, he didn't marry any minors to my knowledge) At any rate- This isn't a simple case of a good man who made "A mistake". He made a whole series of mistakes, over a period of time, with time to plan, to manipulate (not just the girl- his wife? friends? students?) and with plenty of time to think about the consequences. Ultimately, only he and his victim know the extent of what happened and it's lasting effect on their lives. In the eyes of the law, he is the one who is guilty and she is a victim. On a side note: it is interesting how some are ready to let this slide a bit, since he is a man and she is an 'emotionally mature' consenting under 16 year old. I wonder if the reaction would be different if he were a priest, or still a teacher, and his love interest was an 'emotionally mature' consenting young man. I would guess that there would be far fewer people willing to think leniently.

• For everyone who says Tinsley was a "good teacher" you are all on crack! you only liked him because he would pass anyone, you didn't have to do jack in his class. This was no surprise to me that he was sleeping with a student, he cared way too much about being everyone's friend and way too little on what he was supposed to be teaching.

• I know Tinsley personally. He is extremely manipulative. He targets vulnerable women/girls and acts as their "best friend" until he gets what he wants. I agree with other posts that he would never force anything on anyone. His case is worse, he would just persistently manipulate the conversation and the situation until there is "mutual consent". I can totally see that 97% of people who know him would think he is a great guy. That is the scary part. Unless you are the unlucky 3% to be his prey, he does not give out any clues about what he is capable of. He has had an unhappy past, with his father having 4 marriages and divorces, and himself going through at least 3 marriages and divorces and numerous girlfriends. He has never experienced a stable relationship with a woman in his life. I truly hope he gets the help he needs so he will not feel he has to continue to take advantage of women/girls any more.

• The main thing is other people have admitted to knowing of this, one person even said "I guess I should have told the prinicpal sooner" This is yes a huge lack of judgement on Tinsely's fault but on the girl's as well. She enetered this and apparently kept it going but also confided in people so she should be at fault too.

• Tinsley was a great teacher to almost all of his students. I for one was in his Japanese class for four years, and i have to say a learned a lot and built up a great respect for Tinsley. I came to consider him a friend as well as a great teacher. I hate all the slander, hate, and disgust that some are breeding for a man that they dont even know. I realize he made a great and tremendous mistake but at the same time he is still human as are the rest of us (unless someone created a slander bot, then they are a program) and we all make mistakes (some bigger than others i admit). • Also, I would just like to make clear that this is NOT a situation of Rape or force, it was pretty clear to me that it was a mutual affection. • I'm inclined to agree with the general sentiment of the ex-students. Overall, he was an outstanding person. I must admit his class was lacking in difficulty, but that reflected poorly on the students who were resistant to actually learning anything. He lowered the bar so far because that's what it took half the people it seemed. Also this story doesn't seem to give due credit to the fact that he openly confessed to the police and laid out the details in full of their relationship. Was it immoral? Sure. Was it stupid? Sure. I can't imagine the girl didn't consent to the best ability of a however-old-she-was human being, namely because he would never be the type to force himself upon anyone. Pretty clear mistake all things considered, but he's not some sick wacko.

• As a student of Mr. Tinsley's, I must say this article does an excellent job demonizing him. While I do not condone his actions, Mr. Tinsley is not some kind of sub-human rapist. Again, I'm severely disappointed in his judgement, but he's a great teacher and, in my opinion, a great person who made poor choices. I can say from experience that he is NOT a pervert... • Holy crap. I was one of Tinsely-sensei's students, and I NEVER would have guessed that this was happening. O_O I'm honestly shocked, and as much as I want to defend him, I really can't. This kind of thing is just unacceptable.

• Have you ever wondered why your teacher was such a great friend? He had ulterior motives. You cannot know what skeletons this man had in his closet by taking a class with him. It doesn't matter if the relationship was consentual or not. She was not at a legal age to make it consentual, which, just to let you know, is 17 in the State of Colorado. It was wrong on every single level. Wrong that he was a married man and therefore committing adultery. Wrong that he is an adult and she is a child. He made the mistake, not her. • Mr. Tinsley was a fantastic teacher, i was also a student of his and I agree with Mika, he was a friend as well and i believe thats what made his teaching so impactful; he didnt just teach us because he got payed for it, he did it because he cared. I think that 'tasteless jokes' being made on him is heartless. You probably never met him and cant vouge for his character. He made a giant mistake, with out a doubt. A lot of people were hurt by this and we lost a great teacher. But there is no way that he in any way forced himself on the girl or anyone else. That needs to be made clear, because what he's done is already bad enough without ignorant people making accusations about Mr. Tinsley forcing himself on her. It sounds like it was consentual, the girl is not a victim but instead a willing person. This doesnt excuse either one, but that needs to be clear.

• It was not a karate club, the students went for a foreign immersion program to learn Japanese, and the students went as planned. Also, jokes being made on something like this is tasteless.

• I think the problem with this case is not that he forced anything on the girl, but the fact that (A) he was having an affair outside of his marriage, and (B) the affair was with his student who is 35 years younger than him. Even if the affection between the two was genuine, he should have acted differently, as a responsible adult.
