Elvis Dumervil: Here to stay, despite teammate Darrent Williams's 2007 murder

Back when former Bronco Brandon Marshall was considering leaving Denver, the Denver Post posited that it was because he was haunted by the 2007 murder of teammate Darrent Williams. Marshall was with Williams the night he died and testified at the trial of Williams' killer, Willie Clark.

The other Bronco to testify at Clark's trial was Elvis Dumervil, who was also there that night -- and who just signed a five-year ($58.3 million) agreement with the Broncos.

Dumervil's testimony was more vague than that of Marshall, who said he might have "escalated the situation" in an exchange that took place at a club the night Williams was murdered. It was clear Dumervil played a smaller role in the altercation.

But he arguably played a bigger role in helping the cops nab Clark: When another friend who was there that night called Dumervil to talk to him about the murder, he recorded their conversation. The friend, Shaniqua Dunn, told Dumervil that Clark had approached her and her boyfriend's SUV outside the club where Williams and Clark were partying, separately, that night and asked her boyfriend if he had a gun. When her boyfriend said no, Dunn told Dumervil that Clark said it didn't matter, because he already had one.

Dumervil said he recorded the conversation (without Dunn's knowledge) because he thought it'd be helpful for the cops. And it was: A jury convicted Clark of first-degree murder and a judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole plus 1,152 years.
