Doug "Dayhorse" Campbell happy to make way for Pat Miller as Tom Tancredo's running mate

Earlier today, Patricia Calhoun told you about American Constitution Party gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo choosing former state rep Pat Miller as his running mate.

How does previously announced lieutenant guv hopeful Doug "Dayhorse" Campbell feel about that? Very good, thank you.

"We told Tom at the time we were talking with him about joining the American Constitution Party that we wanted him to be comfortable in the campaign, and that we would seriously consider anybody he wanted to suggest as an alternative to myself," Campbell says. "I told him I'd be more than happy to run with him, but if he wanted to bring somebody else into the picture, we would certainly consider that."

The person Tancredo picked -- Miller, who is every bit as pro-life as Tambor Williams, Dan Maes's running mate, is pro-choice -- turned out to be a choice with a personal connection to Campbell.

"I've known Pat Miller since, I think, the first time she ran for the House in Colorado," he points out -- twenty years, since Miller served one term as a state rep from 1990 until 1992. "And I became very disgruntled with the Republican Party as a result of their reaction to her second run. They considered her to be too conservative for their liking and actually endorsed her Democrat opponent, which I thought was intolerable -- and that caused me to find the Constitution Party, which at that time was known as the Taxpayers Party. I decided to switch over and help them build and grow."

By moving aside in favor of Miller, Campbell believes he's taking another step in this mission.

"I'm very happy to have the recognition of our party from people who are well known in politics," he points out. "And as far as I'm concerned, my job now is to become a sort of second assistant lieutenant governor-ish candidate. I'm going out into the counties to develop county committees for the party, and also speaking for all of our candidates, including Tom and Pat. Hopefully, I'll be able to draw attention of people around the state to them. And we're all going to be working on developing responses to state issues -- so it's not like I'm going away from the campaign.

"I appreciate the opportunity to be nominated in the first place," he continues. "But I'm very supportive of both Tom and Pat. I've known them both for a long, long time, and I'm happy with the developments that are taking place for our party."
