Kent Lambert: Backward-thinking Shmuck, R-Colorado Springs

It doesn't take much to be a Shmuck of the Week: Just add the term "R-Colorado Springs" to the end of your name. It's a sure bet.

Take former state senator Dave Schultheis, R-Colorado Springs, who landed on the list a whopping three times, or representative Larry Liston, R-Colorado Springs, a member of that club.

And of course Doug Bruce, R-Colorado Springs, another three-timer and Westword's second-ever Shmuck.

Now, we can add state Representative Kent Lambert, R-Colorado Springs, whose angst over a year-old quote about rural Coloradans from Governor-elect John Hickenlooper led Lambert to tweet, "Hickenlooper actually calls rural Coloradans 'backward-thinking,' unlike the homosexuals in Denver."

But it was Lambert's nifty followup statements that show his true colors.

"What [Hickenlooper] did was compare people in rural Colorado to terrorists and murderers because of the homosexual up in Wyoming that was assaulted," Lambert, who is now a senator, told the Denver Post.

Here's more:

Hickenlooper made his comment last year when a reporter asked why he thought it was appropriate for the Matthew Shepard Foundation to be located in Denver when Shepard, a gay student, was killed in Wyoming in 1998. "Colorado and Wyoming are very similar," Hickenlooper said. "We have some of the same, you know, kinds of backwards thinking in the kind of rural western areas you see in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico."

He added, "At the same time Denver has, I think, one of the more robust, politically active gay and lesbian, bisexual, transgender communities really in the United States."

Lambert, who said he has religious objections to homosexuality, said Hickenlooper was contrasting those with such objections to "the gay and lesbian agenda in Denver which he (Hickenlooper) said is so forward-thinking."

Congrats, Kent. You've kept up Colorado Springs's good name.
