Medical marijuana deluge: Colorado MMJ patients top 113,000, bring in $9 mil in fees
Colorado's medical marijuana population continues to swell. According to the state health department, 113,000 people are now on the medical marijuana registry, meaning the total MMJ population here may soon surpass the population of Thornton, the state's sixth largest city.
The surge in patients may be cresting, however. After all, Colorado's MMJ patient total skyrocketed from about 65,000 in April 2010 to 105,000 just three months later. Now, four months after that, only 8,000 additional people have applied for a card.
All these applications have proved lucrative for the state: According to CDPHE spokesman Mark Salley, the department brought in just under $9 million in MMJ applications fees between November 2009 and October 2010. Considering Colorado has scored an additional $8 million in new medical marijuana business licensing fees, it's hard to argue with the fact that in this state, marijuana has become a cash crop to be reckoned with.
