Alex Landau rhymes about being beaten up by Denver Police (VIDEO)

This week's cover story, "Black and Blue," by Joel Warner, recounts nineteen-year-old Alex Landau's run-in with Denver Police in January 2009.

Landau, now 21, still has physical scarring and what could be identified as post-traumatic stress disorder after being beaten bloody by the DPD (contains graphic images). The college student's rhymes are featured in the story, and we asked him to give us a live performance. Video below.

Last week, Landau's attorneys filed a 37-page federal complaint alleging that the actions of three Denver police officers on January 15, 2009 violated Landau's civil rights. In the video below, Landau talks with Westword about the incident and reads off some rhymes he's written about it and the aftermath. Video shot on the Auraria Campus of the Community College of Denver, where Landau is a student.

Our officials need to come down HARD on these things! Their, and our, willingness to let these things slide is encouraging them to get even worse!

How sickening and sad is this? People who are figures of authority... no wait not a figure but a joke.. of authority that can't handle it. Denver has a problem.. Douglas County is even worse I've heard. We've gotta stick together and stand for our rights citizens regardlesss of race and belief. It's gettin outta hand. Alex, I'm glad you're still with us on this earth. I hope you take your experience to new levels to try to make a difference! Not all white people are idiots however, I am one. ;0) My husband is black which makes my daughter half and people don't even know what I would do if someone put their hands on my babies! God Bless! Let Cavem make some beats, he knows some peeps I know, he produces well. ~Ky Million**

I try to respect the law and recognize the the people sworn in to defend and enforce the law have very difficult tasks. I myself am a young n docile African American male , and I have also experienced officers abusing their positions. Being aggressive to me even though I gave complete cooperation. Though my encounter with police really destroyed a lot of trust I had for law enforcement , It wasn't anywhere near as bad of an ordeal ,as yours that I read in this westwards paper. I must say I do feel a lot of rage from what I've been reading about Denver police these past few years, and I wont ever feel satisfied till heads roll. This has to stop ! I hope your crush these people ,n I hope you stop at NOTHING because you are in unique position to not let these thugs get away with this. I hope they get jail time n someone beat their faces in mercilessly. I'm glad this is getting attention because there are so many people who have been wronged by cops and were so very helpless and silenced. This is wrong on so many levels and it effects our comunitys in such terrible ways both for police and citizens.

The police officers who perpetrated this attack should be doing hard time in the state penitentiary.

I understand your frustration. Anyone that does not appear white feel the pressure. Getting stopped for no apparent reason, etc.

I hope we can change things. Check out www.thebelieveagainproject.com and let me know what you think. We need to get things moving. Tell us how you think we can improve or who we should know to make things happen.
