Cannabis Press Association launches: Calling all pot newshounds

In Colorado, where there's medical marijuana, there's media.

So it was only a matter of time before someone attempted to organize all those newshounds on the weed beat -- and now that time has come.

Introducing Colorado-based Cannabis Press Association.

This CPA is not to be confused with the Colorado Press Association, an organization of reporters who cover subjects beyond pot. Although honestly, what other subjects are there these days?

So far, the details of the Cannabis Press Association are sketchy at best. According to a recent press release penned by the Boulder-based advocacy group the Cannabis Therapy Institute (which may or may not be associated with the CPA), the new media group was involved in a legal panel put on last week by CTI and the Cannabis Trade Council, since the CPA was offering working press complimentary food and drinks. It's a good first move for the nascent organization, since as everybody knows, free booze and grub is the way to any reporter's heart

The CPA's bare-bones website provides a few more details. According to the one-page site, the CPA "provides background and research on cannabis issues and is available to answer questions from cannabis journalists," as well as providing press credentials for cannabis-oriented events. It's all about encouraging fair and accurate marijuana reporting, notes the site, since "cannabis has been the subject of much misinformation in the press from the Reefer Madness years to the present."

An e-mail requesting more information about the CPA has not yet garnered a response. We suspect the CPA's news team is instead busy beating the pavement, hot on the trail of a skunky scoop.

I welcome the forming of the Association. CTI's perspective is not the only one, but it has been the best informed, and its positions the most valuable for patients and caregivers. Stop the silly backbiting; we must all pull together to end Prohibition in 2012!

Wow.

What's up with all the attacks on CTI and Laura Kriho? If the Cannabis Press Association is related to Laura or created by Laura, good for her. It sounds like a great idea. Laura and CTI have consistently defended the patient privacy guaranteed by the original Amend. 20 to CO’s Constitution and have consistently fought unreasonable and unnecessary regulations that ran out most of the caregivers in the state, when hundreds of dispensary owners kept completely silent...Who are these people attacking her and specifically what “misinformation” are they talking about?

Is it the center owners and their paid media spinners and lobbyists who don't like Laura; because she isn't a pushover and she is truly concerned about patient privacy and patient rights, which is something most centers have done absolutely ZILCH to protect and will eventually hurt their businesses, as their customers begin to disappear, as the unprecedented tracking and finger-printing begins?

If I can rediscover some other sources for medicine, there’s no way I’ll be stepping into any of the centers when these unconstitutional “protections” (stripping of constitutional rights) are implemented.

The centers should be joining Laura and CTI protect patient privacy and protect the confidentiality of the registry, because many patients will indeed prefer to get their medicine without all the finger-printing and unprecedented patient tracking (who wants to be on a list that is being shared by all sorts of groups and people, given even medical cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, according to the CSA)?

And if patients connect with all the out-of-business caregivers, which is highly likely, the patients will gladly opt out of the Big Brother Watch List and stop frequenting the centers that did ZILCH to protect their patients’ privacy and access.

Let's hope this organization isn't associated with CTI, otherwise we'll see much more misinformation.
