David Thomas Orton accused of child abuse, attempted murder in Lakewood SWAT standoff

The Lakewood Police Department has issued the booking photo of David Thomas Orton, who is accused of precipitating a SWAT team standoff that stretched from Friday night into Saturday morning. Subject Who Fired on Agents Identified

The Lakewood Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance on January 7, 2011 at approximately 10:15 p.m. in the area of 1300 block of Kline St., between a male and a female involving a gun.

When officers arrived at the residence the male subject identified as 33-year-old David Thomas Orton (02-07-77) exited the residence armed with a rifle. Orton fired upon officers, who returned fire. Orton retreated inside the house and the female exited safely a short time after.

The female indicated to officers on scene there were three young children inside the house. SWAT Negotiators attempted to communicate with Orton for several hours but received no response.

The SWAT team was able to enter the residence at about 03:40 a.m. and safely remove the children, all of whom were unharmed. Orton was located and taken in to custody. He was transported to St. Anthony's Central Hospital where he remains with a non-life threatening gunshot wound, sustained in the confrontation. No police officers were injured during the incident.

Orton faces pending charges of attempted first degree murder, domestic violence and child abuse. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
