Komen 3 Day for the Cure walk in Denver canceled for financial reasons

Each year, Denver's edition of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is among the country's most successful, with even furries joining the cause.

But the same level of popularity hasn't been reached by the 3 Day for the Cure walk, a sixty-mile trek launched in 2009. The 2011 version has been canceled, and money is the reason.

The notice on the Komen Denver website is brief and to the point. It reads:

Unfortunately, the decision has been made to cancel the Denver 3-Day for the Cure Event in 2011. This was a difficult decision in difficult economic times. However, we were not meeting our financial goals in this market and we believe that canceling the event was the most responsible course of action for the program and our donors.

The website for the 3 Day walks allows registration for events in fourteen other locations, ranging from Boston to San Diego -- but Denver's off the list. Clearly, folks here have embraced the Komen organization's fight against breast cancer -- but they'd prefer to race a shorter distance.
