The greatest attribute of our free speech is it allows lies to identify themselves in public. And once done, disappear.

Mr. Art Sheppard (Arthur of "The Penny" who clearly stated that it was ok to beat women and children into servitude.. ) I have a copy of your statement and have contacted the local battered shelters in your home town of San Jacinto Ca and surrounding areas and shared with them your comments. You can delete your comments and run away... Brett Reese hasn't run away and he is standing.. how about you?! Anyone can stand with a lie... few stand with the truth... http://community.essence.com/p... - for anyone looking for additional information on Mr. Sheppard.. please go to the link above.

God Bless America and my freedom of speech.

Why in America are some of us so intent on putting down the people who have made our country a better place. Another year has gone by and once again most of us are ready to celebrate the life of one of our greatest Americans. He, with the help of thousands of dedicated people of all colors and hues, transformed our country into an infinitely better place. I once met him when I was a teenager and was denied a job because of my race. What he told me transformed my life. I retell this story in my book, "Talking Penny." He taught me a valuable lesson. We can achieve whatever we want as long as we're also willing to work hard for it. Happy Birthday Martin!

If I rob a bank to feed my children.. did I commit a crime? If I steal a car because my baby is dying and I have to get him to the hopital, am I still not responsible for stealing the car? Where is your insight or excuse for his lies and his pathetic behavior as a HUMAN BEING - forget civil rights activist?! Shade it however you want.. was there good absolutely.. how much good would there have been if people really, REALLY knew who this man was?? I don't think much at all...

I don't know...how many men who beat the crap out of women get a national holiday??!!! When a man is portrayed as a icon.. shouldn't there be some accountability to his ethics, morality, or just simply be required that maybe he is at least a decent human being? Race has absolutely nothing to do with it.. its about the integrity of the man.. who he was and what he did and when what America thinks to be the truth, is nothing but a lie - He should be stripped of his standing and the world should know who he really was... then let them decide for themselves. We need more people who do know, who have researched to stand up and speak out .... I promise you my children know what a scum bag he was and I don't care who Martin Luther King is today... if he beat women, and the facts show he did THEN HE IS THE EPITOMY OF PATHETIC, AND NOTHING MORE THAN TRASH! Dave do you beat your wife .. this has got nothing to do with owning slaves .. or did you actually miss that part??

Every person who, as you say, is portrayed as an "icon," has faults and lots of them. As Dave Barnes pointed out in his blog, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, and Thomas Jefferson, a married man, actually fornicated out of wedlock with them and produced children out of wedlock. As slave owners at some point they had to beat them, men, women and children in order to force them to accept their servitude. The point is we don't honor our heroes for for being perfect, we honor them for the actual good they accomplish in their lives in spite of their imperfections. I challenge you to name one American "Icon" who lived a faultless life. God bless you brother and instill in you a spirit of compassion for all of his children.

Really??? Really.... you must beat women too? When are we going to start holding people accountable for their actions?? When are we going to stop turning a blind eye... NO, no one is perfect..but living the life he did was wrong and the wrong today is that we HONOR this piece of crap!!! I pray that you never have a daughter who comes home with a black eye, busted lip, and brusied from head to toe...and if you do, I hope that you'll be recalled to this same exact comment... "at some point they had to beat them in order to force them to accept their servitude." Is that what the women in MLK's hotel rooms were for?? I would like to invite you Mr. Art Sheppard to join a battered wife's program -- let me know where you live and we'll have you attend a meeting or two.. are you game? How about walk into one of those meetings Mr. Sheppard and tell the women who are sitting there.. that you're compassion lies with their attackers. Are you willing to take that stand? I bet not....

Brother, reading the tone of your responses, I can tell that you are a person who is full of anger and you chose to direct your rage at people you have never met. You speak as if you know for a fact that the object of your rage did horrendous deeds but the truth of the matter is you don't personally know a single person that was hurt by this great man. Even consider your message to me, a man you have never met and yet you wish evil on me and even on my daughters whom you also have never met. You say you are so concerned and compassionate about the pain of women and then you hope that my daughters come home with black eyes and then hope that my life will be filled with sorrow because of their pain. Do you see a pattern here? You hated Dr. King from the start and you simply read something somewhere and because your heart is not right, you assumed it to be true and started to broadcast a hateful message. Think about it. If a man who was hated by so many because of his stand for the civil rights of Black people had hit or hurt anyone, he would have been immediately arrested by the racist authorities at the time who hated him. I met Dr. King when I was a teenager and was denied a job because of the color of my skin. I got to talk to him personally and remember the compassionate things he told me even to this day. I speak of this chance meeting in my book, "Talking Penny." I will send a copy to you, free of charge if you like. Just send me your address. I talk of his compassionate nature because I met the man... I hope God continues to bless you and instill in you his spirit of compassion for all of God's children regardless of the color of their skin. God bless you brother.
