Moms for Marijuana plan rally for Chris Bartkowicz tomorrow at courthouse

The Denver Chapter of Moms for Marijuana plans to rally in support of Chris Bartkowicz, the Highlands Ranch medical marijuana grower facing federal cultivation charges.

Tomorrow, Bartkowicz will find out if a judge will accept a plea-deal for a five year sentence.

Lanette Johnson, chapter leader for the Moms, said activists plan to be out front of the Alfred Arraj Federal Courthouse at 19th and Champa starting at 8:30 a.m., waiving signs and showing their support before heading in to the sentencing around 9:45. She urges everyone in the medical marijuana community to do the same.

"The Denver chapter of Moms for Marijuana believes that the raid of Mr. Bartkowicz's home, the destruction of his grow operation, and the federal charges against him are undeserved and unjust," Johnson says. "In addition, we believe Judge Brimmer's decision to disallow a medical marijuana defense is unconstitutional."

Since his initial arrest last January, Bartkowicz has maintained that he was following state laws as a medical marijuana caregiver and was growing a legal amount of plants for his patients. Originally facing forty years and unable to use the state's medical marijuana laws in his defense, Bartkowicz pleaded guilty and signed a plea deal on October 21. He has been in prison since that time waiting for Judge Phillip Brimmer to either accept or deny the deal. If Brimmer denies the plea agreement at tomorrow's sentencing, Bartkowicz has said he will withdraw his guilty plea and take the case to a jury.

Here's the plea agreement:

Marijuana is the safest drug with actual benefits for the user as opposed to alcohol which is dangerous, causes addiction, birth defects, and affects literally every organ in the body. Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws. I drew up a very cool poster for the cause which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot... Drop in and let me know what you think!

Hang in there Brother Bear. You can do those years on standing on your head.So sorry for your situation.

Remember all the times you saw "The Boys". Replay those shows in your head, maybe that will get you throw.....After all "Its Just a Box Rain", and at least you did not fall hard/er.

One would think the DEA and ONDCP has doctors or scientists on staff.Sadly this is not so - we would like to see that changed and believe it is a step to change.

Please sign the letter petition to appoint a doctor or scientist to the DEA and ONDCP.

Thank you!

I am sorry to disagree, but these are not legitimate institutions, nor would they become so by employing more people.

Contact Senators Udall and Benett and your Representative and tell them to zero out the budget of the DEA (now ~$2.6 billion).

I agree entirely, and have signed several petitions to stop funding the DEA. The petition mentioned reads:It makes no sense that the DEA and ONDCP are run solely by law enforcement officials. These individuals have no medical or scientific training. It is obvious they do not take any scientific studies into consideration. Someone in charge of a drug policy should have scientific knowledge about drugs or at the very least medical training in medicines and drugs. Those in charge of the DEA and ONDCP simply tout the same falasies based on old gutter science, and yellow journalism portrayed in the past. We citizens are wiser than this and deserve better than touted falasies and dishonest tactics, even if they are out of ignorance. There is no excuse for ignorance by those in charge. Much has been discovered in recent times. The science done over the last 40 years needs to be taken into consideration, not simply ignored.

The Vienna Declaration was drafted by a team of international experts and initiated by several of the world’s leading HIV and drug policy scientific bodies: the International AIDS Society, the International Centre for Science in Drug Policy (ICSDP), and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. It was launched as the the official declaration of the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) held in Vienna, Austria in July 2010. The Vienna Declaration advocates for evidence based drug policy and strengthen the call for policies driven by evidence.

With this in mind, please appoint a doctor or scientist to head the ONDCP and the DEA. If not, at the very least appoint a medical doctor or a scientist to each department with equal power and say, a co-chair so to speak.

Thank you for your time and consideration.Sincerely,

If we can't eliminate them, change them. To end a war it must be fought from all angles.
