Pit bull proponents take a bite out of City Hall today over service-dog ban and more

City Hall will be going to the dogs today, with pit bull protesters converging on the building at 14th and Bannock streets at 11 a.m. today -- if the protesters can get around all that Big Air scaffolding.

But there's already plenty of hot air in the dog-eat-dog world of pit bulls.

In this week's Off Limits, we report on Pit Fest, a concert and fundraiser tomorrow that will feature Shorty Rossi, a former actor and little person who stars in Animal Planet's Pit Boss, a show devoted to bringing pit bulls back into the mainstream of mutts.

But it's going to take a lot more than a TV show to make pit bulls palatable in Denver, where the breed has been banned for more than two decades.

Hence the protest that will converge on City Hall today, focusing in part on Denver's ban of pit bulls as service dogs. In December, Denver city council rejected a service-dog exemption for pit bulls. But an attorney suing the city argues that the pit-bull service-dog ban violates federal law.

In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2009 feature about the twenty-year pit-bull ban in Denver, as well as the incredible collection of pit-bull-related comments on our website, with references to Nazis and rabid monkeys. And those are the nicer insults.

Rossi will be at today's protest, too; find more details on the pit bull protest here.

Pit bulls are garbage and the people that own them are strange.

Something is lacking emotionally or mentally in those that need this odd dog.

There is a switch on pit bulls and once it is turned on they will not stop.

That comment kinda makes you seem strange. I own a pitbull and have been around or owned them for most of my life and this hidden switch that you speak of is in ALL dogs! I have worked in the animal field since I was 16, iam now 33 and trust me pitbulls are not the only dog that will take a bite out of your rear end! Odd dog? There is nothing more odd about this dog than any other dog. All dogs come from the same place, they are all geneticaly the same. We as humans have made them what they are today. People like you scare me, talk about having some mental issues. If you really think this way your way behind in life.

Has our beautiful United States of America decided to take lessons from the Gestapo? Once the land of the Free and the Brave, we now kill our unborn innocent children and demand the murder of man's "Best Friend". Although, I am not a fan of the "Pit Bull" breeds, I believe in judging on merits and deeds, not a profile. The mentality that chooses to seize an innocent beloved pet from a family just because he looks like a beast is insanity! I dare say we have many human beasts running around with current violent criminal records that have been allowed back into society with no remorse. I speak of child molesters, rapists, drunk drivers! My innocent nineteen year old son was killed by a drunk driver who had a violent criminal record and was granted probation by a judge. Where were the people to step in and demand that this killer go to jail? Yet, we spend the tax payer's money to kill innocent family pets by the thousands because of a fear mongering group of fanatics! Hello, am I waking anyone up out there? Let me see if I have this right...we can murder innocent children, seize and kill innocent pets because they "might" hurt someone and then let violent criminals run free through our streets!

Denver was removed from my list of places to live because of the ban. It does indeed make the city look stupid and backwards.

Banning 1 breed of dog from Denver is the most ignorant move I have seen in a long time. What if we said no previous hispanic violent offenders are allowed to live in the city of Denver? People need to get over this idea that pit bulls are out to kill every little kid they come across. They, like any other dog can have the tendency to be aggressive if beaten, raised poorly or mistreated. This ban on pit bulls just makes the city of Denver look stupid. We are forward thinking on most issues, but ban 1 breed of dog because a few people in government have issues with them. I have seen plenty of pit mixes around Denver and I hope to see more. Remove your heads from your asses people.
