Pit bull proponents take a bite out of City Hall today over service-dog ban and more

City Hall will be going to the dogs today, with pit bull protesters converging on the building at 14th and Bannock streets at 11 a.m. today -- if the protesters can get around all that Big Air scaffolding.

But there's already plenty of hot air in the dog-eat-dog world of pit bulls.

In this week's Off Limits, we report on Pit Fest, a concert and fundraiser tomorrow that will feature Shorty Rossi, a former actor and little person who stars in Animal Planet's Pit Boss, a show devoted to bringing pit bulls back into the mainstream of mutts.

But it's going to take a lot more than a TV show to make pit bulls palatable in Denver, where the breed has been banned for more than two decades.

Hence the protest that will converge on City Hall today, focusing in part on Denver's ban of pit bulls as service dogs. In December, Denver city council rejected a service-dog exemption for pit bulls. But an attorney suing the city argues that the pit-bull service-dog ban violates federal law.

In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2009 feature about the twenty-year pit-bull ban in Denver, as well as the incredible collection of pit-bull-related comments on our website, with references to Nazis and rabid monkeys. And those are the nicer insults.

Rossi will be at today's protest, too; find more details on the pit bull protest here.
