Medical marijuana dispensary review: Patients Plus gets a minus

pp.shop.JPG
Last year on The Daily Show, I quipped that dispensaries are like restaraunts: Some people want a nice steak house, while others can settle for McDonald's.

Patients Plus is the latter -- a fast-food marijuana stop.

Fittingly, the shop is across from an actual McDonalds just off the Washington exit from I-70. As glaringly obvious as the green painted crosses on the walls make the place, what caught my eye initially was the disheveled-looking, possibly homeless man waving a five-foot wide sign for the shop on the street corner.

The owners, whoever they are, have gone out of their way to paint just about everything on their property green, including the parking stops (just in case you forgot where you were). There was nobody in the front office when I walked in, so I stood around for three or four minutes until I heard a door in the back of the shop open and close. A few seconds later, an employee popped his head out of the security door into the front waiting room and led me back. He mumbled something about the door buzzer not working, but judging by the fumes wafting around him, he had probably been out back having a puff.

In the back, the shop opens up into a stoner's playground. Just beyond a black light poster gallery is a lounge with a flat screen on the wall, a black leather couch and a coffee table full of books about herb. Patients Plus also has a head shop of pipes off to the right when you enter. My budtender said that they are able to discount their glass by buying in bulk and making most of their profit off herb sales -- or, at least that's the plan for the two-month-old shop.

A homemade "YOUR EDIBLES COULD BE HERE" sign sat on the mostly empty edibles shelf near the sparsely filled shelves of pipes. Patient's Plus also sells clones and growing supplies, though I didn't see either of the two in my visit aside from an Advanced Nutrients poster on the wall. But despite their efforts to cram a chill spot, a head shop, a grow store and a pot dispensary into one place, there's really nothing original going on here (if the overdone green paint couldn't tell you that).

The bud bar is a long, wooden counter top that takes up most of the space to the left. Behind it were roughly two dozen small jars filled with the meds, along with a lot of empty jars. The budtender talked me through their strains, explaining that everything is top shelf and that staffers rotate out strains from their warehouse. Every day there is a "top shelf special" for $25 an eighth, and when that strain runs out, they choose another to discount. I told the budtender that I was looking for something for pain, likely more on the indica side of things, and he selected about seven jars, including the Mazar, LifeSaver Diesel (L.S.D.), and NYC Diesel that I took home to review.

Patients Plus had a decent number of strains from sativa to indica, but I only got through the first few before a second customer came in and stood behind me, making me feel rushed. I did get a look at the shop's Island Sweet Skunk and Super Lemon Haze, however, and in retrospect, I should have grabbed one of those instead of the L.S.D. The center also had a handful of hash oil waxes on the shelf for $50 per gram that the guy said were made with a CO2 extraction. Now, either he misspoke or was completely misinformed -- but what was on the shelf was clearly a butane extraction (also called butane honey oil, BHO, budder, wax). I don't have a problem with butane extract, but the budtender should be careful about that, because some people dislike butane.

I wound up making my picks quickly and walking out. Like when I stop at the McDonalds across the street from time to time, I knew what I had in the bag was going to do the job but probably wasn't the best thing for me to be taking home to put in my body.

We have recently begun to accept new members for 2011-2012 and walk-ins are always welcome. We have lowered our pricing and now offer a 10% discount for Veterans & Students (with valid ID) and HIV & Cancer patients.  (All our TOP SHELF 1/8’s are capped at $40).  Since opening our doors in 2009 our Denver dispensary has stood by our product and offered a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. http://www.tgtree.com

This place sucks and with all the choices in the area, its better to gosomewhere else.  Its in a really badneighborhood.  I suggest you avoid thisplace if you can. The place is on the news for robbery every few months...  If you want to get some quality you betteroff going downtown and get the real deal.

Idrove out there from Littleton after seeing their ad in Westword and found thisto be the most disappointing dispensary I have ever been. I was expecting agreat marijuana smell when I walked in. No I was greeted with a dead animal smell. The smell made me feel sick. So did the brownish baby poop paint on the walls. Whatis with the badly painted black ceiling with red-yellow-brownish floor? The roomwas a sparsely furnished space with a couple of old fashioned broken grannieschairs from someone’s basement.

Thegirl behind bullet proof glass had no personality. My verification took awhilecus she was too busy with other employees listening to there clubbing the nightbefore.  She took a little over 15minutes to verify me.  The rest of thegang needed to figure out that I needed to be let in.  I guess they cant afford a lock to buzz you in.I had to wait even longer for the gangsta tenda to open the door. I was theonly patient in there or I would have left.

Thedispensary waiting room has a baby poop green splashed on the walls covered withhorrible abstract paintings. They should put those paintings in a trash can andmy boyfriend would gladly light it up. There dispensary was filled with missmatched furniture and decorations.  They mustbe trying to fill their big empty space with there friends used furniture.

Thetender acted like a gangsta. I all ready did not feel safe in this part oftown. I felt like I was buying drugs from a gang member instead of buying medsfrom a compassionate caregiver. I asked the tender a question and had to wait awhilefor him to take a hit off his joint before he could think of answeringback.  Let's just say he might have beena little over medicated to say the least. He was having such a good time withthe other employees that he ignored me.

Finallyhe showed me some meds but I saw no quality medicine. I saw buds with white partialson them. I asked him what it was and he told me it was tricombs.  It more looked like white plastic partials. Hetold me that everything is top shelf but it looked like middle to bottom shelf.I thought all the meds were over priced at $35. That is too much for these weakmeds. The $25 special was still to much. If all the meds were priced at $25. Imight have bought one. One big problem was most of the strains was lacking incrystal. There was only 12 strains and not 30 to choose from. He had no sativasavailable. Just indicas and hybrids. I need the up energy that sativas have. Heshowed me some sativa ear wax that was sulfur yellow and it smelled the same. Thetender told me it was CO2 extracted but I could easily smell the butane so Ipassed.

I didn’t pass on the free joint but I should have. They seemed mad whenI only wanted to try the free joint. The free joint wasn’t even made of shakeor trimmings. It was more like water leaves with no crystal. I won't be goingback to patients plus again. There's a couple of things that I would rather dothan go back there and one of them includes burning my house down. If you enjoybeing insulted and being over charged then this is your place!

Where do I start with this terrible place? These people arejust out to make money off of their patients. Seriously, $35/.125 for some budthat tastes like dirt and grass never priced right, it seems like they justprice the meds according to how much money they can make off of it, not thequality or how much they actually pay for it. I guess it wouldn't be too bad ifyou could know exactly what you're getting, but their quality is just notreliable enough. Since then I have met a private caregiver whose prices putthis company to shame. Dont waste your time and money like I did.

Patients Plus is the worst MMC that I have been to so far. The owner Mike Kollarits does not know a thing about mmj. He has a big ego and provides the worst customer service. They are about getting your money and not giving you what you paid for. HE stands there and braggs that he is the grower. He should just say he got in a bad batch. I will not be back.

Will, I know exactly what you are saying! In my opinion, Patients Plus Sucks and I will never go there again. I went there last month and it was assume. A guy named David owned it and he bend over backwards to please every customer. The place was well stocked with meds, edibles, and pipes at great prices. Then his grower, made up some lies and threw David out. Now Mike runs the place and it sucks! He raised the prices, brought in crappy meds, and when I looked in his eyes, I saw evil! I will never go back there. Bud

Marijuana is the safest drug with actual benefits for the user as opposed to alcohol which is dangerous, causes addiction, birth defects, and affects literally every organ in the body. Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws. I drew up a very cool poster for the cause which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot... Drop in and let me know what you think!

Correction needed: you referred to this place as Patient's Choice in your review (4th para). Obviously, this place can't hold a candle to the stellar dispensary that is Patient's Choice. I'd love to see an updated review of the real PC.

Since when is NYC Diesel an Indica????

Thanks for reinforcing the notion that when you really need relief you turn to your caregiver because caregivers always have better bud. I think it's because caregivers grow smaller batches and truly care for each individual plant rather than mass producing. The dispensary strains shown appear premature and mass produced as is often the case when trying to grow and sell mass amounts of cannabis.

John, thank you for pointing that out. I tend to write these late at night, plus the fact that all dispensary names start to sound the same...

I'll fix that now.

It isn't, nor did the budtender imply that it was -- he just said it would be a heavy high that might help for pain.

I wouldn't say that.

There's plenty of shops offering amazing quality herb and plenty of "caregivers" selling crap (as you know, things like powdery mildew don't discriminate).

I urge patients to look around and find the best options to fit them -- whether that is a private caregiver or the convenience of a dispensary or a combination of both.

thanks for commenting.

I support the shops that do it RIGHT. I don't care where they're from (though I'm about 80% sure PC is locally owned and operated). We live on an interconnected globe people...get over the "local first" jive.
