Peter Forsberg to announce retirement after two-game comeback with Colorado Avalanche

Maybe Peter Forsberg quickly realized his body couldn't handle NHL game action anymore, or maybe he just wanted to get away from the suck that is the Avalanche right now. Either way, Forsberg will reportedly announce his retirement from the NHL at a Pepsi Center press conference moments from now.

Forsberg played in back-to-back games over the weekend against Columbus and Nashville, but will not suit up tonight against Calgary, or ever again. At least that's the story for now.

This was the 37-year-old's third stint with the Avalanche and the last two were plagued by injuries. Forsberg requested to practice with the team to test out his oft-injured right foot and began doing so in late January. He felt good enough to play in games, but has apparently had a quick change of heart.

Forsberg registered a minus-four rating, thirty-five minutes of ice time and four penalty minutes in his two games this season. It was a sad teaser for Avs fans, who didn't get to see the former two-time NHL champion play on home ice. It's made all the worse because the team has compiled a seven game losing streak and now sits outside the playoff picture.

The former league MVP is earning the "Brett Favre of hockey" moniker, but the suddenness of this announcement and the fact that he called this comeback "The Final Test" suggests he won't give the NHL another go. I stress the word suggests.

After two comeback attempts that featured more injuries than highlights, one hopes Forsberg will not do any more to dilute the good memories of his nine-plus seasons with the Avalanche.
