Computer captures photo of possible laptop thief -- and maybe our Shmuck of the Week

It may not compare to HAL -- the sentient computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey who could carry on a conversation, read lips, enjoy art and feel emotions.

But a laptop stolen in January may turn out to be a nemesis for the person who took it.

Boulder police said this week that the computer, which was stolen along with an iPod and a cell phone in the 1800 block of 22nd Street, took a picture of someone who was using it after the theft and transmitted it.

"The computer has a security feature in which it takes a picture of the first person to open the laptop after it's reported stolen," says a Boulder Daily Camera article about the theft. Police are now trying to identify the person, although they don't know if he is the thief.

But if he is, then he deserves to lose this game of criminal chess to the computer. As HAL said, "Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?"

Anyone with information should call Detective Sarah Cantu at 303-441-4328.
