Dave Logan signs new KOA contract, to remain voice of Denver Broncos for three more years

Only a few months ago, many University of Colorado fans were touting Dave Logan as the CU Buffs' next head coach. But it was not to be: CU's hiring of Jon Embree made it clear that Logan is unlikely to ever jump from coaching Mullen High School to his Division I dream job. So he's sticking with dream number two, re-upping with 850 KOA to co-host the afternoon drive show with Lois Melkonian and serve as the broadcasting voice of the Denver Broncos.

The KOA release announcing Logan's decision to ink a three-year contract extension quotes two people: Pat Connor, Clear Channel Denver's new president and market manager, and Joe Ellis, president of the Broncos and de facto stand-in for owner Pat Bowlen, who's reported to no longer be in charge of major decision-making for the franchise, possibly due to memory issues -- although that's regularly denied by the squad.

According to Ellis, "Dave is a staple of Denver Broncos football as well as this community, and his knowledge, passion and insight bring our fans closer to the game. He has provided some of the most memorable calls in the history of the franchise on KOA Radio, including his play-by-play during the Broncos' back-to-back Super Bowl wins. We are fortunate to have him continue as the voice of the Broncos, capturing all of the special moments to come as our organization begins an exciting new chapter in its history."

Here's hoping "exciting" is the right choice of word in that last sentence, as opposed to, say, "dispiriting."

As for the rest of Ellis's testimonial, Logan will never be listed among the great play-by-play talents of our time. His delivery is straight-forward and workmanlike in comparison to the likes of Vin Scully or other legends, and he's not much of a phrase-maker. But there's no denying that he's a Colorado sports icon thanks to his brilliant play at Wheat Ridge High School and CU -- and if his pro career (spent mainly with the Cleveland Browns, supplemented by a year as a Bronco) was less stellar, that hardly matters at this point.

Besides, given so many changes happening with the Broncos, from new coach John Fox downward, it's nice to have some stability. And stability is one of Dave Logan's best qualities.
