Maestro en Casa (Teacher at Home), a Denver Public Schools-funded radio series aimed at teaching English to Spanish-speaking parents, was launched last year. This week, 220 completed the program.

"I congratulate the 220 graduates, as well as the rest of the participants currently enrolled in the program, for their commitment and great personal accomplishment," said DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg. DPS, he added, is excited to "offer innovative programs aimed at helping parents improve their ability to advocate for their children's education."

The goal of Maestro en Casa, which was developed by the Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together Foundation (MATT), is to help Spanish-speaking parents better communicate with their children's English-speaking teachers, the district has said. DPS serves about 30,000 Spanish-speaking families, and 31 percent of students are English language learners.

When Maestro en Casa launched last August, DPS said it hoped to register 5,000 families to take part in the program, which is broadcast on MARIA 1090 AM Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 and 10 a.m. The district is halfway there; officials say over 2,500 parents are enrolled.
