CU defends gun ban before Colorado Supreme Court, student group wants to pack heat

Last June, questions about CU's gun ban had become so overwhelming for Board of Regents spokesman Ken McConnellogue that he joked about wishing he "had a gun so I could blow off a few rounds." But in truth, CU wants the ban, which was lifted in April 2010, to be reinstated -- an argument made before the Colorado Supreme Court yesterday.

As noted by the Boulder Daily Camera, an appeals court found that CU's policy violated the Concealed Carry Act of 2003, which holds that local governments can't adopt bans of their own. In court, CU maintained that the rule doesn't apply to a university, just cities and counties -- a viewpoint rejected by representatives of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, which also signed on to fight a weapons ban at CSU.

The Supremes are expected to rule on the case in the next several months. Forewarned is forearmed.
