Martha Stewart glass table explodes, and not for the first time (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Martha Stewart drew blood on Father's Day. Or at least a glass patio tables marketed under the Martha Stewart Living brand did.

According to Arvada's Nancy Passarella, she and her family were sitting down for a meal when the table shattered for no particular reason -- and they got photos of the aftermath.

According to Fox31, this incident isn't as unusual as it might seem. Back in 2005, hundreds of people complained about exploding Martha Stewart tables and a class-action lawsuit was filed, with the Consumer Products Safety Commission issuing an order the following year that the tables be redesigned.

The company issued the following statement to Fox31; it references Kmart, where the tables are widely sold.

"We take product safety very seriously. We provide the aesthetic design for beautiful products. Because we do not oversee the mechanical design, engineering or manufacturing of the products, we require all of our vendor partners to adopt and comply with product safety programs and reviews. If customers have any questions about these particular tables, they should contact Kmart customer relations at 866-562-7848."

Given that the table was several years old, Passarella may be out of luck in terms of a replacement -- although the post-explosion pics featuring wounds from flying glass could change that equation. Look below to see those photos, as well as the original Fox31 report.

Sad but fortunately no serious injuries; must keep in mind that glass is highly reactive to sudden temperature changes eg about 10 years ago I was using a Pyrex measuring container to heat water in microwave, I was in a hurry & suddenly plunked the empty measuring cup into dishwater, to my shock it quickly exploded leaving nothing but shards of glass, lesson learned

"Do not Expose Glass Containers to Sudden temp changes" notice that the last family were outside indicating that that "table was hot & someone placed a glass with ice/drink & whamo it EXPLODED"

Tempered glass explosions seem to be relatively common. They can happen because of temperature changes (which may be slight and undetectable by humans), or tiny flaws in the glass as it was manufactured. There are photographs all over the net. These damn things need to be re-designed so that if they do explode they won't have jagged shards of glass flying everywhere, causing eye injuries etc.

I have a bar that is not quite two years old that exploded on my deck in May. Lucky for us no one was sitting at the bar when it exploded. It was Martha Stewart Outdoor Living, purchased at Kmart

we purchased our table 6 or 7 years ago from K-Mart.  Last September, we came home from vacation to find that the glass top had shattered and glass was all over the patio.  Fortunately, we were not sitting at the table when it shattered.  At the time, we thought K-Mart would not do anything about it because of the age.  I am now going to call the K-Mart Customer Relations department and complain.

Hey, this happened to us 7 years ago! Bought a new set from Kmart, took it home, my 5 year old son was helping set it up and it exploded on him. It took us hours with a shop vac to suck up the gazillion pieces of glass on, in the cracks of the deck and under the deck.

Kmart took a formal complaint and replaced the table. We thought it was us!

Same thing happened to us, same table.  Threw away the frame and spent hours cleaning up the glass.  Went out and bought a non-glass table the very same night.

Sounds like the table was the problem, not you. Thanks for the post, Entertainmentw.
