AnnaSophia Robb's odds in Teen Choice awards: Can she top Natalie Portman? (VIDEOS)
Local girl made good AnnaSophia Robb is up for a Teen Choice award as Best Actress in a Drama for Soul Surfer, in which she portrays Bethany Hamilton, a surfer who lost her arm to a shark.
The Denver Post's Bill Husted thinks she's got a shot to win at the August 7 ceremony, to be broadcast on Fox, and he could be right. But she faces an uphill swim.
At least Robb stars in a movie that's actually made with teens in mind -- and that includes those on the younger end of the scale. But she's also the least known of the nominees.
Of course, few people of any age saw Leighton Meester in Country Strong -- and hers was a supporting role to Gwyneth Paltrow. And Reese Witherspoon's flick, Water For Elephants, wasn't exactly a smash, either, despite the presence of Robert Pattinson, whose appeal seems strictly limited to films in which he's required to suck.
Yes, it's a multi-leveled Twilight joke!
Problem is, Minka Kelly's The Roomate did good business among the Teen Choice demo despite being a de facto remake of Single White Female. And even though Black Swan's audience was supposed to include only those under age seventeen who were accompanied to a theater by a parent or guardian, we all know that didn't stop thousands upon thousands of allegedly verboten young folks from getting an eyeful of Natalie Portman pleasuring Mila Kunis and herself when not acting like more of a loon than a Black Swan.
My money's on Portman -- but if you want to give Robb a fighting chance, click here and vote for her early and often. Be warned, however, that your registered date of birth must show you to be a teen or you will be restricted from weighing in. Discrimination!
