There is No Poop Fairy pitch named Best New Thing in the World by Rachel Maddow (VIDEO)

Last night, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow named a press release the Best New Thing in the World -- but not just any press release. An amazing press release.

There's nothing ordinary about "There is No Poop Fairy," a Jefferson County Sheriff's Office campaign to get people to clean up after their dogs. After all, when was the last time a press release came complete with its own myth?

Here's the Poop Fairy's tale, as it were:

Like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot, the fabled poop fairy has been the stuff of legend. Flying undetected in parks, neighborhoods and schoolyards, she was said to follow close behind dogs and their owners -- picking up what the dog left behind, before flying off to the next canine creation. A widespread belief that she existed seemed to reassure some that cleaning up after one's dog was sort of... optional.

Maddow shared this info -- and news found on the Poop Fairy Facebook page about volunteers in Poop Fairy T-shirts who'll be handing out poop bags from July 9-17 -- with a sort of unfeigned glee, opining that the anonymous Jeffco worker behind the campaign had likely been underutilized before now. Let us second that emotion.

Look below to see Maddow's bit, as well as the downloadable Poop Fairy poster -- which would be the perfect addition to any doghouse!

I had to chime in on this one because it really irks me to come across a dog’s excrement.  For the life of me, I cannot understand why people insist on owning a dog but refuse to take care of it.  It has always been my understanding that if you truly love your pet, then you would be responsible for it in every means. When I was young, I remember my Dad picking up after our dog and now that I’m older, with my own home and pet, I do the same. When out on walks with our little pooch, both my spouse and I carry two plastic bags and dispose of any waste she might leave behind. While at home, both my spouse and I pickup our yard daily, however my neighbors have two larger dogs and I feel so sorry for them as they are FORCED to walk around in their own waste! They have to sit in it too! (Poor babies) It’s disgusting and is harmful to the pets.  I wish that irresponsible dog owners would take better care of their pets. It has been my experience that the dog WANTS you to pick up the waste. In doing so, it keeps both you and your pet happy, healthy and clean.

There is a poop fairy and she is in Northwest Arkansas! The Poop Fairy Dog Waste Removal Service has been scooping yards since September 2004!Reports of my nonexistence are greatly exaggerated!!

Let's hear it for the artist responsible for the creative work behind this clever and social-minded public service campaign.  Bridgit Coffman is the graphic designer for Jefferson County Open Space - an agency also challenged with debunking the Poop Fairy Myth.Bravo Bridgit!- Jean Schwartz
