Reader: Tim Tebow could be phony about his faith, and if he is, the truth will come out

Tim Tebow.
Kyle Garratt's analysis of a recent ESPN Outside the Lines feature on Tim Tebow touched on the debate about whether or not the QB's overt declarations of faith make him a polarizing figure. Our readers continued the conversation. Here's one whose own Christianity doesn't stop him from wondering about Tebow's sincerity.

S. Book writes:

I don't know Tim Tebow, although I admire that he is not ashamed of his faith. For some reason, he was given an opportunity to be some sort of public figure and he just openly talks about what he is most passionate about, not caring what others think. The media just loves that, no matter who you are. I do have to say that it's quite interesting that you use the word polarizing. As it says of Christ's followers in 2 Corinthians, "we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life." There will be those who like what you have to say and how you are living, and there are those who won't. To me, Jesus is the most polarizing figure in history.

Tim Tebow is no Jesus Christ. He could very well be a phony, but all of this is public speculation. You can take him for what he is or dismiss him for what he is. As a Christian and a football fan, I do wonder if this guy is really for real, but time will tell if that is the case. If he is a phony, then sooner or later, all of this will be revealed.

I wonder if S. Book is authentic in his faith? Don't judge for you will be judged in like manner. Only God knows the heart of Tim. What he lives out in his life is what is in his heart. And if he should fall S. will you, like God, forgive him or will you condemn him to rot on the sidelines? If you do not, you haven't really understood what God's grace is all about!NuWaveDave

I dunno. I think there are a lot of people who would probably respect Tebow more if it were him instead of Matt Prater getting arrested for DUI with a Shotgun Willie's "entertainer" in tow...

If Tebow was God, he would be starting quarterback for the Broncos and they would've beat the Raiders. Instead, he's an open follower of Christ, like so many of your co-workers already, who happens to play football. His spirituality is irrelevant to his profession. Now when he makes a mistake, which he will because he is human, everyone will sit back and say "I told you so," because they think Christians shouldn't make mistakes. I also don't know him personally, but I bet he has seen Jurassic Park, which I too have seen, which basically makes us really close friends.

I don't know him personally, but we have mutual friends from Tennessee and Florida.  They not only tell me he is the real deal, but they tell me that there is NONE like him in ALL of sports.  If you are waiting for him to stumble, check your own relationship with Christ.  We as Christians should never want anyone within the Family and Faith of God to stumble.  Plus, if you are wanting and waiting for that, just don't hold your breath.HE'S THE REAL DEAL...  AND SOME PEOPLE JUST CAN'T HANDLE IT.

Maybe people wouldn't want him to fail if others didn't hoist him up on the pedestal you just so proudly did, trying to remind us all of just how more pious and righteous he is than all of us - and by extension, putting yourself on that same pedestal.

Faith shouldn't be about who is more pious than who.  It shouldn't be about competition, or ego, or pretense.  But Tebow and his followers make it all of those things.
