Occupy Denver: Corey Donahue says sexual contact arrest is "bad nut-tap joke gone wrong"

Thumbnail image for corey donahue under arrest cropped.jpg
Corey Donahue.
Corey Donahue has become a grinning face of the Occupy Denver movement, but this also makes him somewhat of a scapegoat. The activist for both marijuana and the occupation is politically fearless in a way that verges on foolhardy roughly as often as it's impressive.

This weekend, it ended in a charge of unlawful sexual contact.

Donahue ended Saturday night's second altercation between the police and Occupy Denver as the 25th protester to be arrested, this time with three new charges: disturbing the peace, petty theft and unlawful sexual contact. The last of these, however, is the strangest. Donahue's charge comes as a direct result of what has been reported as him groping a television news photographer -- but he has his own side of the story:

"It was just a bad nut-tap joke gone wrong," a newly released (again) Donahue told Westword yesterday.

At that time, he appeared elated, almost better for the wear, although his second stint in a holding cell in the space of two days came with a misplaced jacket and a new round of arrest photos circling the Internet. "I never groped that photographer," he adds.

Donahue interacts with the police at Saturday night's demonstration.
Donahue has faced increasing attention because he is seen as a leader of the leaderless movement. In the time it took him to tell his story, three people approached him with a high-five or a genitals joke. One shout of "What's up, rock star?" earned a grin.

"The cop was being very hostile, and there were cameras all around us all the time," Donahue said. "In the Thunderdome here, dick jokes and that kind of thing are the norm, and we all embrace it and have fun. I feigned a nut tap at the photographer, and I was accused of groping him. If you ask anyone who was around me, they will tell you that they never saw me do that -- because it didn't happen."

Donahue is one of four who were also arrested during the occupation's first altercation, for which he was held on counts of unlawful conduct on state property and resisting arrest. Although he escaped arrest during the contentious hour and a half when most of the other 25 were removed from the scene, he was approached and taken in during the occupation's resulting march on the 16th Street Mall.

"Everyone needs a scapegoat," Donahue says. "It's the cops' idea that the movement has a leader, that if I'm in jail nobody's going to be out here doing anything important. Well, that's wrong to begin with, and I was still working on the occupation from jail."

The recent petty theft charge comes as a direct result of Donahue's role in Crazy For Justice, a marijuana advocacy group. In August, Donahue requested documents from the Marijuana Enforcement Division but left the MED's office without paying for them. A glitch In his paperwork meant Donahue was arrested on Friday under an incorrectly spelled version of his last name, but he was unable to escape the old warrant the next day.

"I'm just trying to get the nickname 'The Colorado Kid,'" he jokes. But another volunteer has a better suggestion: The Nutcracker Prince.

As with the first round of arrests, the Denver chapter of the Anarchist Black Cross worked like a well-oiled machine to raise funds and organize co-signatures to get the occupation protesters released from jail. Although Donahue maintains his innocence and has no plans to quiet his passion for the movement, he also has no plans to be arrested again in the near future. After all, any further arrest will be accompanied by a felony charge.

"Instead of facing the world's issues, let's all just say I grabbed some dude's balls," he says. "That will feed your family, right? The system is worse than anything I could possibly do, and we need to keep getting arrested until we bankrupt it. Then we'll rebuild it.

"I just can't be one of the people getting arrested this time."

While I think this particular charge is a complete overreaction to a sophomoric joke I do not think Corey is as much of a victim that he thinks he is. As much as I've defended him recently, I think he was directly responsible for the use of pepper spray last Saturday. If you were there or if you've seen video from the confrontation with the police you know that he was at first offering food to police as sort of a peace offering but as they moved in more he become increasingly more aggressive in the way he thrusted it into their faces in a threatening manner. Everyone else was passively sitting in front while he antagonized the police behind them. I'm not sure why he was not arrested after being sprayed but after having his eyes rinsed by a member of Cop Watch he continued to run around and escalate the chaos, he seemed completely caught up in the moment and couldn't pull himself out of it to try and calm things down. I hope he can be more reasonable from here on out before more people get hurt. I'd rather have woken up to pictures and stories of the thousands of wonderful people that for eight hours peacefully assembled and made their voices heard than had to see another story about Corey.

well, whatever his intentions are, I would find it hard to get behind someone who thought that nut tap jokes gone wrong were the best way to handle trying to get press for the cause. Right now a movement like this needs legitimacy and people who can bridge the gap between those who agree with them and those who do not, not some yahoo who thinks that becoming a character is going to create dialogue-it is in fact the quickest way to allow those who don't understand you to write you off.  He sounds more interested in building a cult of personality around being an activist than he sounds concerned about his tactics creating a negative impact on the ACTUAL work that needs to be done here.

Its nice that other people who agree with you are high-fiving you. the problem is those people are not the ones in a place of power to make change occur. Lenny Bruce once said that protesters  "don't know the dfifference between the authority figures and those with the actual AUTHORITY VESTED IN THEM" and are  more often than not protesting against the police, against actual policemen than against the people who are the ones poised to make change. -i.e. those that have the gold. just saying stupid rhetorical statements like (paraphrased) 'were waiting for their system to fail so we can rebuild it'. makes me wonder why ANYONE would let that guy lead the parade-we need REAL world solutions not buzzwords, sound bites and catch phrases. If you think he's a hero, fine - but he is not the kind of leader we need right now, no matter how cool you think his antics and technique are.

These protestors are brain washed nut jobs. I heard on the radio someone defending them. Saying these are normal people and they have jobs. All I have to say is they must have some very understanding and patient bosses to let them stay out of work for a month. Either that or these people don't have jobs and are lazy bums. No one can really take them serious, they are clowns putting on a show. I think all the Americans out of work should go and apply for these people's jobs, I'm sure with all the people out of a job now would be happy to take these clowns jobs.

Weather he actually groped or not is immaterial.Weather you agree with his views or not doesn't matter. What's sad is that someone leading  a cause would conduct themselves with such impropriety and still expect to be taken seriously.

OK, you've convinced me -- there are several herd-mentality morons here pontificating about a subject about which they have no firsthand information.  I don't agree with everything Corey says or does, but he seems blameless to me in all the several incidents for which you all are trying to attach onus to him, and certainly in this one.  Corey did not commit a crime or even an impropriety; the reporter was obtruding himself into the canteen (a tiny space) where he did not belong in the middle of a tumult, and Corey discouraged him from doing so -- in response, that corporate tool filed a false criminal charge against Corey.  If any of you had so much as a trace of common sense, you would be calling for criminal charges to be filed against the reporter instead of castigating the victim.

Yep, no better way to get back at the financial system that is killing us than by bankrupting your local city and county government. Politicians and the greedy Wall Street scumbags that are ruining this country may be shockingly (and intentionally) short-sighted, but they really have nothing on anarchists in that regard.

"This system is wrong! And we are going to destroy it to change it!"

So your hated system falls apart. Then you and your fellow anarchists can gather up all your rocks and sticks to fight against the certain takeover of the world by the well-armed and trained military force that will inevitably rise to fill the void left by the lack of a "system." Hopefully whatever warlord seizes power will be at least somewhat benevolent, and not a particularly cruel master.

Yes, money = power. But so does sophisticated and advanced military technology that you have none of, but which the people you hate have ALL of.

So good luck guys! I'll see you later when the system falls, and we end up in the same forced labor camp together, breaking rocks under the watchful eye of some Conan the Barbarian-looking mofo with a fully-loaded M249.

Oh, that's just crazy talk though.  Right?

I never believed the charges. Truth is, anyone can be accused of anything at any time and you are pretty much guilty until proven innocent.  It happened in my own family.  You get people pissed off at you and they make up things about you to get rid of you.  Always question any accusation.

I think poster's inclination to condemn Corey Donahue can be used as a litmus test of their awareness and intelligence (and most posters here fail).

Remember that hideous hiy song from the 70's, "Having My Baby".I would rather listen to that pn a loop than reread some of these comments.Incidentally and more on topic, you tube is FULL of 20's somethings, especially marines, kicking or punching each other in the balls.  Just a glance at the vast array of people who post this activity as a joke, shows that this sort of thing isn't as serious as some are making it sound.

How can people with such a tenuous hold on reality as yourself manage to navigate the Internet?

SenorMysterioso

Teresa, your perception of the protesters is wrong. I'm not saying there are not some clowns in the crowd but of the thousands of people that were there on 10/15 and everyone that has been there since the start, the majority are hard working, everyday citizens from every background there to make their voice heard.

If you are actually interested in challenging your perception watch some of the video from last Saturday.

What's Next?
What's Next?

Agreed. These people are just "Clowns putting on a show." The show so far has been, according to Corey, Full of dick jokes, grab dudes balls, and provoking a police response.

What is next? Are they going to start attacking women and children?

You are an ugly, ugly person.  What are you doing posting in the middle of the night?  You must not have a job AND be a lazy bum -- if you do have one, tell me where so I can go apply for yours while you're sleeping in.  You are one sad clown.

All that being said, this charge sounds like unbelievable BS.  Just because he's misguided in his attempts to make things better doesn't mean he deserves trumped-up charges.

Corey's got a lot on his plate. Now instead of protesting and working for greater social change, he is going to spend the bulk of his time going to court and trying to stay out of jail. Criminal trespass and fighting words at the Boulder Library, stealing DOR files (petty theft), unlawful use of the park and resisting arrest X2. Looks like the show has become all about Corey now. His "crazy for justice" antics are detracting from the Occupy movement. Corey could be more effective if he wasn't getting arrested all the time, but I think this is on purpose. Corey likes to see his name in the paper more than he cares about his "movement". Even if he didn't touch the guy's JUNK, he should know enough to keep his hands AWAY from people's NUT SACKS. But Corey just thinks it's a big joke and a big conspiracy against him. Corey can never take responsibility for his actions, it is always someone else's fault. Well, Corey, now that you have effectively co-opted this movement so the press is only focusing on the Corey show, are you satisfied?

It just sounds bogus that a man with no prior sexual misconduct charges in the middle of a protest with onlookers and cameras everywhere would deliberately grope anyone.  Corey Donahue has been a vocal and brave occupier for weeks and there are people who want to smear him because of it.  There are vicious people out there and it's naive to think otherwise.

I see absolutely no reason to condemn Corey, and those of you who try marshal the most meretricious rhetoric to do so.  If you all want to substitute the animus of a TV idiot and the fact of a false criminal charge for common sense and solidarity with the man who fed the Occupation for three weeks, you are mere tools of the oppressors.  I am sorry that so many people have used this forum to declare their inability to think for themselves, but the evidence is crystal-clear.

Do you support poor grammar, or are you just hoping to rouse the rabble?

You know perfectly well that I am drawing attention to the rest of the sentence from which you gleefully extracted "I am operating from a position of superior understanding", i.e. "with respect to several of the controversies in which they were involved, because I have direct knowledge of the circumstances, and because I know them well".

Are you addressing only those who are not reading what I write?  You show zero inclination to engage me point by point.

"I am operating from a position of superior understanding"

Robert Chase
Robert Chase

It is untrue that I always agree with either Tim or Corey; it's just that you all take them to task when they are in the right -- and do (try to) explain how me justifying Corey's behavior is SELF-righteous.  I am not being smug, but I am operating from a position of superior understanding with respect to several of the controversies in which they were involved, because I have direct knowledge of the circumstances, and because I know them well.  We cannot examine your motivations or reflect on your character because you choose to remain anonymous, but I am certain that you would come off the worse in a comparison with either Tim or Corey.

P.S. I should not be placed in the position of having to constantly proclaim the fact that I don't know everything and am not infallible; I do so spontaneously often enough. All this is by way of responding to worthless and ad hominem arguments -- you can't or are disinterested in arguing specifics. Denver is full of Good Germans (both culturally and genetically) whose seeming first, second, and third impulses are to trust and obey authority, and the proof is witnessed above by the witless attacks on Corey Donahue by people who probably imagine themselves liberal in outlook.

@Robbie Chase: Pretty sure he meant you. You always believe you are correct. And you are always claiming people you know, such as Corey "Nut Job" Donahue, or Tim Tipton (Google "Tim Tipton MMJ scam") are in the right, and others who point out their mistakes, are ALWAYS wrong. That's pretty much the definition of self-righteousness.
