Occupy Denver Facebook page claims city turned sprinklers on overnight protesters

After yesterday's meeting between Occupy Denver reps and Michael Hancock, in which the Denver mayor reiterated his opposition to letting protesters camp, relations between the city and the 99 percent are decidedly chilly. And they got even colder overnight, after those braving the temperatures were reportedly doused by sprinklers.

Here's the latest item on the Occupy Denver Facebook page wall, posted sometime after 3 a.m. -- roughly the same time as the tent city was dismantled last Friday morning:

URGENT SUPPLY NEED!: Blankets and warm clothing! The city turned on the sprinklers in 34 degree weather. Help keep our Occupiers safe, healthy, and warm!

Of course, it's possible that the sprinklers had been pre-set, and whoever oversees them forgot to turn them off. But those commenting on the post certainly don't buy this argument. Some examples:

Some of the homeless folks who camp there on a regular basis told me that the city will do that from time to time just to encourage them to move along... what a shame. It would seem that both the city and state have a decided intolerance of and distaste for speech.

No way?! Them bastards :-/

Ah nice, not only are they actively trying to curb free speech but they're doing it through the use of precious fresh water. Says so much. Wish I could help.

Break those sprinklers that we all paid for!

Very typical and oft used tactic in Denver. We are always in a drought but they turn on the sprinklers. Of course the human angle but getting at them by also pointing out their waste of water is another tactic of taking higher ground. I am going to the Denver Water web site right now where you can report water waste.

I'm appalled at the city for doing that! The sprinkler systems should have been blown out and turned off by now. It sure sounds like an obvious (and cruel) ploy by the city to drive you all out of the park. STAY STRONG.

There's no indication this icy greeting has broken the will of demonstrators. Indeed, another Occupy Denver Facebook post notes that uniformed military personnel have joined the protest -- good news, in the view of one commenter, because "police certainly don't want to be photographed arresting people in uniform."

Look below and page down to see photos from the night and early morning when the Occupy Denver tent city came down.

News Flash to you Occupy Denverites!! You are actually NOT the center of the universe except in your immature, narcissistic minds (or what is left of them).  The city has a right to water the grass in its park, and if it scheduled the sprinklers automatically in the middle of the night, then it did so because it wanted to do it off-hours when the park is legally EMPTY, so that the park can be properly and legally occupied by dogwalkers, children, and law-abiding citizens when it is legally open.

Dear scumbags--  If you want freedom of speech, do it legally. If you must do it in groups, get a permit LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.    YOU DISGUST ME!!!

These protests are a joke! Sounds like a bunch of bleeding heart liberals who voted for the quick change artist!

Most people/companies/municipalities have winterized and shut off their irrigation system by now. Apparently Hick and Hancock enjoy wasting water, and dousing protestors for jollies.

Next from your Mayor, police dogs and firehoses! Maybe some signs in the park, "Protesters, don't let the sun set on you here!"

Suppose for the sake of argument that this was not an intentional act -- does it occur to anyone that the City is completely heedless where and how it sprinkles water?  Parts of Cheesman Park have had standing water in them for an extended period of time and the new turf slides around on top of a pool of mud.  The sidewalks around Civic Center Park do not absorb water well, and water piped here from the Western Slope at considerable expense is running off of sidewalks and streets and flowing into the Platte.

Kcm2

I think the city uses "grey" water in its sprinklers, so its not a water issue. Its a first amendment right to assemble question.

Robert Chase
Robert Chase

That should have occurred to me, but even greywater should not be being wasted.

I've gotta agree with you Robert.  People are too quick to attribute maliciousness to what is more than likely just a poorly automated system.

Howlingmadswede
Howlingmadswede

Actually it did. :0). I try to keep it PG on the public forums. Oddly, I dont disagree with PART of the message down there, just the presentation. The conduct of alot of the participants discredits the message. There seems to be alot of different agendas mixed in with people who have NO clue why they are there (and some who might be confused as to what year it is..)

Jepu
Jepu

I support their message, and I took my daughter down there this weekend. We left after about 10 minutes. The crowd as very small crowd and a lot of them were smoking pot, swearing constantly in front of my 10-year-old and arguing among themselves over basic issues like junior-high children about overthrowing city government. I looked at this motley crew and though, "Yeah, that's going to happen." Maybe if real people got behind the cause, it wouldn't be left to the idiots and mannerless jerks. Just a suggestion, Occupy.

NotWoofka
NotWoofka

Jepu, that's exactly what the protesters need to realize.  They do have valid complaints, and there do need to be some fundamental changes in the way that large financial institutions are allowed to do business and manage risk.  However when they take a worthy issue and muddle it up with things like pot, anarchy, and defending a field kitchen, it takes them from a serious movement to a joke for the nightly news.

As much as I disagree with them, at least the Tea Partiers had some skills in organization, PR, and were able to make an effective political change.  The Republican party has always been skilled at tapping into the emotions of mainstream America, and it would very much behoove the progressive movement to do the same.

Endangering people with water in near freezing temperatures--Mayor Hancock has hit an all-time low.  What a sorry excuse for a human being.

You do realize that the Mayor isn't responsible for turning on the sprinklers, correct?

We should strip Mayor Oreo naked, tie him to a tree in Civic Center Park, spray pepper spray in his face, soak him in icewater, and leave him to freeze.

NotWoofka

Robert, do you even realize how foolish you make your cause look with comments like that?

I should quit feeding the trolls I suppose...guess there's no place for a rational discussion in the Westword.

Just_Anita
Just_Anita

Agreed. Watching non-stop media coverage for the past 2 years of armed and angry Tea Party protestors with knooses to hang Obama and misspelled signs, pretty much set the tone for "foolish" ineffectual protests that effectively elected the most racist, bigoted, corrupt, and hideously sociopathic representatives our country has ever had.

As the nation and world watches in horror - while the legislative puppets we call Congress holds our nation's economy hostage for greed crazed corporatocratic terrorists - I'm thinking we might be past 'patty cake' and 'pillow talk' with those who have stolen our economic stability. I don't give a crap if it makes the cowardly arm-chair quarterbacks feel squeemish at the surge of intensity. It's time to change the dynamic of the 1% controls, and their imposed Trickle-Down golden shower economy ( BTW - a stupid notion the narcoleptic voters supported throughout the Gipper/Bush/Clinton/Bush years), and move us to a sustainable economy for the 21st century. Continued support of corporate abuse is insanity. Especially when my tax dollars subsidize these plutocratic greedy bastards and bitches.

Anything short of public humiliation - and or flogging - isn't retribution enough for the total disrespect Hick and Hancock have shown toward OCCUPY protestors. We need leaders able to pull their heads out of their asses, and seek ways to support "humans" in the equation of profit. Instead we get the "Hick and Side Kick" sick comedy show. Both have shown nothing less than their lack of leadership; placating to the lowest common denominators of rabbit hole economics and pandering to the militarized 1%.

As if people aren't suffering enough, these two just feel the need to add 'sand to the vaseline' with armed stormtroopers and malfunctioning sprinklers. What a team.

NotWoofka
NotWoofka

So you're advocating taking a violent stance.  Just wanted to make sure.  Do you mean that figuratively, or literally?

Robert Chase
Robert Chase

I'm not sure that I can make it any clearer -- in online forums associated with newspapers, I have noted that many posters express the view that justice must or should take the form of retribution.  What I suggested for Mayor Oreo would be retributive justice.

NotWoofka
NotWoofka

I'm sorry, I don't understand quite what you mean.  Could you possibly clarify that?

Robert Chase

Retributive justice is extremely popular in most forums such as this.

Or, they could just go home.  It's their choice to participate in the least effective method of change possible.

Haaahahahahahaha. Protesting is apparently now the least effective method of change. Sir or madam, that ineffective method of change is how we got civil rights in this country among many, many other things - in fact, it's how we got the country itself. Please read a fucking book.

obviously the most effective form of bringing about fundamental changes to society is by liking facebook pages.
