High Times Cannabis Cup: Colorado companies win big in Amsterdam

high times cannabis cup.jpg
The cup.
The number one spots in the 2011 High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam last week for Best Seed Company indica, hybrid and sativa were all taken by Colorado-based companies.

Even in Amsterdam, long known as the Mecca for cannabis cultivation and use, Colorado herb comes out on top.

Rare Dankness, DNA Genetics and Reserva Privada were all crowned top of the industry last week at the 24th edition of the event. And while I haven't been able to get clarification yet, it looks like Nelson, hash expert at The Clinic Colorado, may have taken third in the hash competition entered under Reserva Privada Colorado.

Unlike the Medical Marijuana cup held in Colorado earlier this year, the Amsterdam cup is open to entries from around the world.

Granted, DNA and Reserva Privada were founded in Amsterdam and California respectively, and have since relocated to Colorado. But Rare Dankness can truly be called Colorado-born. The well-known Colorado grower known simply as "Scott," who is currently head grower for Southwest Alternative Care, founded Rare Dankness Seeds in recent years and has built it up into a well-known name in the Centennial state. (For those wanting to try some Rare Dankness grown by Scott, SWAC had his Tange Haze, Facewreck Haze and Nevil's Wreck on their shelves as of this morning.)

We haven't been able to reach any of the winners yet because they are still traveling. However, Scott posted this on his Facebook page Saturday: "Damn guys, what can I say... I'm humbled to bring such a time honored award with global recogonition to our home state. I'm still stunned."

Other members of the local cannabis community are in transit back to Colorado, too, including attorney Warren Edson, who was part of a Dutch raid on the Cup that took place Wednesday morning. Rumors have been flying about what caused the increased police presence, but Edson told me over the weekend that it was a permit issue.

We plan on catching up with him and other locals about the cup, Amsterdam herb and the police raid as soon as people trickle back and smoke enough to curb jetlag.

I am a massive fan of Reserva Privada but I also love DNA as well as they are consistently good at producing strains that completely destroy me! Also I just bought me first ever cannabis seeds with bitcoins the other day, I would definitely say to people to try it out, was much less sketchy then using a card to pay!

What are the percentages? Shit looks weak right now without em. Last year was 64%....was it lower this time or something? Come to California...90-97% thc on our wax....what's yours?

The ONLY strain at the Cannabis Cup that almost knocked me down (stumbled on exhale) was the Happy Kush from Reserva Privada (Colorado) and it didn't get a mention - of course, I purchased those seeds!

Can someone clarify some things for me? DNA is a Dutch company and Reserva is an offshoot that allows other small time breeders to get their seeds to market right? Are these both now located in Colorado? I had heard the DNA crew signed a consulting contract with The Clinic, but not that they would now be identifying themselves as a Colorado company. Also, were the DNA/Reserva strains grown locally by The Clinic or overseas? Any answers would greatly satisfy my curiosity and decide which dispensary I will travel to next.

Also, to Scott from RareDankness.... I looked at your Facebook page and you should be ASHAMED to represent the industry the way you do. It's one thing to inform people of your doings, but it's another thing to say "Just rolled into Amsterdam with 100g of shit these boys ain't never seen. Yep gangster style, just fuckin rolled through the airport and customs with it. Get ready muthafuckas."

It's cool and all that you won, but WAY TO RUIN YOUR REPUTATION AND THE INDUSTRY'S REPUTATION BY MAKING YOURSELF SOUND LIKE AN ARROGANT, DISRESPECTFUL, GANGSTER MOTHERF***ER!!!!

You act like a bunch of thugs and gangsters online and in person. Way to put a bad image on the medical Cannabis industry. It was supposed to be all about helping people, but now it's about the thug life, huh?

The Cannabis Cup and most of the hype associated with it ARE BULLSHIT. The owner of THSeeds for example, Adam Dunn, won last year with his "Cold Creek Kush", which was ACTUALLY some bud he bought from a man who lives in the mountains in Colorado. Adam bought this bud, took it illegally to Amsterdam, and submitted it as one of his very own strains. The man doesn't even have a cut of the strain, how could he able to produce seeds of it....? HE CAN'T, AND HE IS A FARSE, ALONG WITH ALL OF THSEEDS.

Also, any person that schmoozes Adam and the High Times guys can get placed in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd... Do you want to know what it takes??? ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IT SCHMOOZE THEM AND PAY A LITTLE MORE FOR YOUR ENTRY TO INCLUDE ADS AND PROMOTIONS ETC... When High Times sees they're making money off the entries, they reward those who buy the big promo packages by placing them 1st, 2nd, or 3rd!

The whole thing is a bunch of crap, and it's unfortunate that they're the ones people are looking at for reference.

I love DNA and Reserva Privada, been ordering them through Attitude Seed Bank for years.  DNA and Reserva Privada always sprout, they turn out like the picture, and description suggests, and High Times Cannabis Cup Winners, what else can you do?  Order some DNA, you won't be disappointed.  When using Attitude Seed Bank, they always hook it up with a few killer freebies too.

Hey William - this could be material for future Mile Highs and Lows articles.  Maybe you can do some reviews of Colorado seed companies.  If you do, don't forget 303 Seeds.

Grooveygreen

How do they claim this when it is openly admitting a violation of international drug trafficking laws? Isn't the whole reason that Colorado is not getting targeted like California due to our unambiguous compliance with state law? Isn't there already a Cannabis Cup that is held here in Colorado? This doesn't make much sense to me?

Very cool to see recognition of some of the great local strains and companies.  Life is too short for shitty weed.

Submitted herb is always privately grown. No one would just put their most recent warehouse bud in the Cup, they plan and make sure their strain is represented properly by having someone take special care of it. High Times Cup is a marketing tool more than anything else, and it seems to be working well since you let it decide where to travel next. The power of suggestion is strong, these people want you to buy their seeds which will all vary from the submitted sample, even the same cutting will be different grown commercially. The great thing about seeds is that you can find something you like, not what some tourist judges think, and it could turn out better or it could turn out crappy. Don't chase strain names unless their clone-only, seed-line strains like the ones promoted in the Cup will have many variables. Happy hunting, I hope you find what you're looking for.

Is there an admin for this message board? If so can you please ban KnowWhatsUp? His all caps screaming is an irritation and his suppositions are weak and unfounded. Almost everything he spews would not hold up under scrutiny. He'd lose in court and whine about the judge taking a bribe and how the jury was corrupted and tainted.

This board should be restricted to mature people.

Define 'The Industry'?

Any smuggler should be proud of his work, and Facebook is about engaging people, you sure seem to be engaged.  We all love the win win situation in the stoner world holmes! These G's Scott and Adam are some down home brothers keeping it real for all the High Times readers!

As a patient in Colorado I contacted the Health Ministry in the netherlands and asked if I may bring my MEDICINE.  As I left Denver I presented my MEDICINE to the TSA and they allowed me through, when I arrived in Amsterdam I pesented my MEDICINE and was allowed into the country.  I dont see how I broke any drug trafficking laws.  I took my medicine not drugs. I had all my paperwork stating my condition (which is cancer) and no one had a problem.

As for this article,  LOL, will you couldnt wait to get me on the phone and had to snag FB quotes.  classic.  Im still humbled and honored.   thanks for the love.

Unfortunately the High Times awards aren't based on quality or purity of the Cannabis, but instead they are based on internal politics, bribing, schmoozing, and who the entrants know and how much they pay for their entry. It's become more about politics and high school drama to these guys than it has become about the quality and purity of the Cannabis.

Please don't misunderstand, I am not looking for any "famous" seeds or strains, but am curious about DNA moving stateside. I know Adam Dunn did this already and was wondering if it's becoming a trend. The other reason I ask is because I would love the opportunity to smoke some DNA strains grown out by DNA peeps. Not like Aaron is personally growing them I realize, but you figure if they are going to put their stamp on something it should live up to their standards or close. At least you would hope. Smoking a strain grown, even via proxy, by the folks who bred it should be somewhat special since they would know all the ins and outs of doing it properly.

What kind of response is that? It makes no sense......

"The industry" is defined as the collective group of people and entities sanctioned by their respective local governments and the Colorado Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division (a division of the Department of Revenue) to produce and distribute Cannabis to patients whose doctors have recommended they use Cannabis as a potential source for relieving their ailments.

KnowsWhatsUp

You're right. It's supposed to be "Coal Creek".

Excellent.  There has been some good discussion in the Colorado Patients section of Rollitup.org lately that may help with your research.

I'm surprised the TSA, a Federal Department, would give merit to your Medicine claim.  This doesn't sound right.  I searched their website for information on their medical marijuana position but couldn't find anything.  Is it really their policy to allow for travel with medical marijuana or did you not identify the specific type of medicine your were bringing?

I think it is a terrific big balls achievement in any regard, congrats!

Allamny

Hmmm interesting, would this work if you were flying to say, Kansas? Can you call the Healthy Ministry in Kansas and if you land in Kansas are you still taking a huge risk when you present your medicine?

You make it sound as if you never had any doubts whatsoever about the process, just wondering what your analysis of the risk involved is, and whether the call to the Health Ministry is 100% go.

Jay - I was not recommending rollitup in general.  I was pointing out the fact that a particular section of rollitup has had a fair amount of discussion regarding Colorado seed companies and clone companies.

That said, there are intelligent conversations taking place on rollitup every day, with some great exchange of knowledge.  There are punks on there as well but that's life on the internet...

Jay
Jay

Matt, rollitup is the kindergarten of growing sites, where the youngsters and druggies hang out after school. Cann.com is the elistist, snobby douche who brags about knowing and growing but is too busy talking shit to contribute to the masses. The Farm is the old guard - those who quietly contribute vast amounts of awesome knowledge but seldom ask for help or handouts from anyone. Lastly we have a few outliers like gardenscure and roomofgreen that don't get enough traffic.

For the love of god please don't recommend rollitup.

Thanks,

Everyone Else

Pete, here's more on flying with herb -- which the TSA has told me is fine, so long as you are flying to another medical marijuana state that recognizes your status as a medical marijuana patient in Colorado:

Cannabis keeps me Cance (tumor) free and pain free and healthy, my oncologist chose to use it over most of the pharmacuticals they give to chemo patients. Even beating cancer you always belong to the Big C club. The Netherlands legalized cannabis as medicine in 2003.  They recogonize the difference between Medical and Recreational as we all should.  Would I fly to Kansas with my meds, no.  Would I fly to any state or country that recogonizes cannabis as medicine, I did but thats my choice.   Was I unsure if it was a set up and once I stepped off the plane Id be arrested, the thought crossed my mind.  And its hard to not realize what the medicine is when its clearly visable, presented to your face with all paperwork.  Nothing shady, times are changing, dont be afraid to help them change.  Cannabis IS medicine.
