Capitol Hill assaults up 30% as victim wonders where cops went (Hint: Occupy Denver)

The number of late-night attacks and robberies on the streets of Capitol Hill is up significantly over last year's pace, raising questions about the safety level in the city's core and whether police are cutting back on patrols of the area to deal with Occupy Denver protesters and the weekend crunch in lower downtown.

And 24-year-old University of Denver student Andy Greschler, the victim of the latest assault, is asking a few questions of his own.

Greschler was walking home from a friend's house at around three a.m. last Friday night when he was hit up for change by two men in the 1100 block of Pearl Street. Greschler kept walking and was attacked from behind -- with, he suspects, a baseball bat. He staggered home, then discovered his wallet was gone and his right cheekbone was shattered.

His story was first reported on the Slow 33 blog (where the Paul Andre photo above first appeared) and then hit the television stations. Through the end of October, there have been 86 aggravated assaults reported in the Capitol Hill area for 2011, compared to 62 during the same period last year.

Denver police officials have said they're not sure if Greschler's assault is related to a spree of attacks last summer (many involving baseball bats) on the Hill. They've also insisted that the resources devoted to Occupy Denver haven't detracted from their ability to patrol neighborhoods, especially late at night.

Greschler doesn't feel reassured. In interviews he's urged fellow Capitol Hill residents not to walk home late at night and indicated plans to move out of the neighborhood.

Sadly, but not surprising, the Westword as usual is too fucking cowardly and politically correct to accurately describe these attacks and the racial element involved in them. Just like the 30+ downtown attacks that Hick tried to cover up....Hey Westword, just pretend that there were roving gangs of white thugs beating up blacks and hispanics....I'm sure we'd get the entire story then, wouldn't we? Pussy ass political correctness run amok.

Soooo, has there ever really been a huge police presence on the side streets of Cap Hill?  I mean really?  There is a huge police presence on Colfax and a decent presence on 13th &14th Ave.  There seem to be police close at all times - I've called the police for happenings on my street (Penn) before and there has always been a response (of multiple officers) within a couple of minutes.  I don't know that the police can be blamed for someone being beat up, while walking alone at 3am.  It's generally a good rule of thumb to not walk alone at 3am.  That's a prime time to get targeted (bars have let out, people are usually drunk and probably not really too vigilant).  Crime has been increasing in Capital Hill since well before the protesters even thought about protesting.  This seems like a far stretch for a correlation.  These all seem to be pretty random attacks and that tends to happen in a CITY.

Be safe folks.  Perhaps THIS is something to take action about.  Take back the neighborhood. Call the police if you see something suspicious, join a neighborhood organization, start a neighborhood watch.  Practice common sense safety measures.  Stick to the major streets and try to avoid the ill lit side streets.

Now I feel even less safe knowing there are vigilantes out there who are carrying guns.  Fantastic.

You start off by giving political cover to DPD for diverting officers to the illegal intimidation of Occupy Denver, and end by whining about the natural reaction to DPD's non-feasance -- stupid!  I am not surprised; you list Governor Hypocrite as one of your interests on your facebook page.

Robert you are a worthless troll that just whines and complains but never posts anything useful. Go back to sitting on the sidewalk trying to find a way to get more of other peoples hard earned money. I would say go back to your job but it obvious you don't have one of those.

"Go back to sitting on the sidewalk trying to find a way to get more of other peoples hard earned money" -- what a nitwit you are!

No cops in Cap Hill? Good. Stay out. Now reduce the permitting fee for firearms and we'll be off and running.

My friends and I now are carrying guns in Capital Hill thanks to the lack of an effective police presence. I will be damned if I am gonna get my face crushed and not kill the mother fucker while they run away.

HEY DPD, pull your head out of your tight ass and PROTECT AND SERVE! I know it is a complex concept but maybe just maybe your priorities are ass fucking backwards.

Maybe some of the crime is being commited by occupiers?

You are an idiot; no "maybe" about it!

So you are saying all occupy people are complete law abiding citizens? And you call me an idiot!

Denver PD publicly says they have enough manpower, but privately I wouldn't be surprised if they're purposely blowing off policing neighborhoods they know are potentially dangerous, to generate a little crime wave will bring some public support to their crackdowns. That's messed up.

Boulder, Ft Collins and Colorado Springs all have Occupy movements, yet those cities are barely spending a dime on Occupy.   But for some reason, Hancock finds that he must spend money (over $500,000 at last estimate) and resources, and put his citizens in danger to insure camping, littering and horn honking are controlled in Civic Center Park.   It's a shame that a great city like Denver is saddled with such an incompetent Mayor.

The fitness of every officer in command at DPD has been called into question by the disastrous assault on civil liberties mounted by Governor Hypocrite and Mayor Oreo.  The blame trickles down, but the incompetence of the Mayor and DPD's administration at least would be obvious to all but for the fact that local media have acted consummately as the corporate propagandists that they are and falsified what they did not ignore in their coverage of Occupy Denver.  What good is a police department that would prefer to engage in massive shows of force against peaceful protesters than to protect life and property?  We need drastic reform of the DPD, not just the firing of a few abusive cops on the beat; their superiors who condone such conduct must go!

Aurora has a huge problem with gang-bangers, drugs and prostitutes on East Colfax.I have noticed heavy police activity by Aurora Police over the past three months.East Colfax in Aurora has calmed down. Guess where the problem migrated too? Denver.Chicago Police have become very aggressive recently and other cities against street thugs.A lot of what is happening in Denver migrates here. There is a gang problem that preys on the most helpless: Seniors, disabled, females and the intoxicated.

I hope you realize that by referring to our mayor, or any black person, as "Oreo," turns your  otherwise well-thought our rant into ignorant hate speech. Sad.

No, I realize that you are one more semi-literate sheep.  "Oreo" is pejorative, but not racist.

P.S. People cannot get over the fact that "Oreo Cookie" is a phrase which refers only to black people, but what you should focus on is the fact that the other part of the definition is "who suck up to the White Establishment". Hancock cannot change being black, but he can stop being an Oreo anytime. It would be great if some people of color would apply the same epithet -- would that be OK?

Indeed!   I've got friends at Occupy sites in various cities, and guess what?  Wherever the police presence is minimal and camping allowed, everything is fine!

Meanwhile on Capitol Hill, the baseball bat beatings continue..
