Occupy Denver elects a new leader: Shelby, a Border Collie mix

Despite the new political burden, Shelby remains unfazed: She sprung into action immediately, earning a joke from one occupier that this puts her ahead of most elected officials. Although she spent much of her first night in office celebrating (read: napping), it's unclear if the news has successfully hit home. "Are you the new leader?" Peter John Jentsch quizzed her in a voice usually reserved for children. "Are you, girl? Are you?"

Michael Moore speaks to the Occupy Denver crowd.
Her bodyguard, as the 27-year-old filmmaker prefers to be called, has accompanied her to Denver from their Boulder home every other day for a month now, and Shelby maintains a strict protest against leashes. ("She has yet to come by herself, so she's only as passionate as I am," Jentsch says.) The black-and-white dog walks freely and without prejudice throughout Civic Center Park unless a threat of police interaction relegates her to the car.

"She spent a few weeks getting to know everybody here, so when Al nominated her, everybody knew who she was and liked her," Jentsch says. "She's the youngest leader of a revolution in history and the first of any occupation so far, but she's smart, so people know she won't make any situations. We just have to make sure she doesn't get arrested."

The Occupy Denver crowd listens to Moore.
Since she was adopted from the Boulder Humane Society at three months old, Shelby has consistently maintained an open mind. She identifies as an independent, though Jentsch says she was originally an Obama supporter and now leans toward Ron Paul. (Shelby remains characteristically tight-lipped about her politics.)

The four-pawed president serves as a direct response to those who claim a leader, by putting a face on the movement, would make it easier to handle. But when it comes down to it, the occupiers don't want to be handled.

"At the DNC riot, we were able to locate a few of the leaders and talk to them directly, but for Occupy Denver we can't go around and talk to everyone in the park directly," says Matthew Murray, public information officer for the Denver Police Department. "That's one of the issues of this style of hierarchy."

While Shelby's background is not ideal, her personality and her status as a symbol more than make up for her youth and the fact that, being from Boulder, she was born on foreign soil. She is currently accepting applications for her fictional cabinet.

"It's strange that she's the leader of Occupy Denver before holding any office at Occupy Boulder," Jentsch says. "She has been recognized as a person for a long time, but this is the first time by an elected body. I always knew she'd be famous."

Just another point to highlight the fact that these people don't even know or care what they are doing. They are the people who just want to complain for the sake of complaining. They have no leader, no focus, and don't even know what they want to accomplish. They just want to bitch and moan until someone hands them everything they think they are entitled to....meanwhile they camp out, make a mess, and collect unemployment, instead of looking for a job...or even coming up with a solution to present to the public to solve the issues they are complaining about.

FINALLY a group of occupants smart enough to realize that this Border Collie is smarter than all of them put together!!!  Now that's some real hope and change.

This article contains major errors. Occupy COMO (Columbia, Missouri) elected a dog named Legs (an Airedale Terrier) leader about a month ago. He won in a unanimous vote. I suspect an Occupy Denver member that's been staying with us spread the idea.

I think a lot of you don't really get it, though: This is a coalition with everyone from across the spectrum. Whatever group/ideology the leader has will get everyone else painted with that same color and that's not helpful. Leaders are the first to be arrested regardless of legality, they get demonized, or if that fails they get assassinated. So we don't provide them a target to focus on. If they feel they MUST have one, it might as well be a dog. It's hard to attack our fearless leader for his sex life, decry him as a political extremist, arrest him, or, looking at that adorable bearded face, kill him.

Border collies are bred to herd sheep.  The occupiers have inadvertently chosen the perfect leader for their movement, at least until somebody can find a lemming.

Border collies rule! We have one from Texas, half Border Collie half English Setter. She has a goal of taking over the world, so she will not join any cabinet except of her peers.

Isn't it cruelty to animals to have a dog out in 17 degree weather? Seriously, someone rescue that poor dog.

Not really. They are covered in fur. You don't even have to give them booties unless the ground is below zero. They're made for it. It's the little yappy hairless monsters you gotta cover up.

There are unconfirmed reports of the leader committing multiple unwanted sexual advances towards others. These advances have included, but are not limited to, the leader sticking her nose in other living-beings butts, and licking of other's genitals...

I heartily embrace Shelby as leader!   There's no doubt that she will get more accomplished than the handful of self-appointed elitists who only "occupy" the park for "their" GA's.

The deliberative body which has spent many hours dithering about whether or not to make a symbolic statement banning "drugs and alcohol" (excluding tobacco, of course) for fear of offending decent people (who are appalled by the use of cannabis, but don't mind cigarette smoke) just elected a dog to be its leader, thus demonstrating Occupy Denver's resolve to effect real change.

P.S. Which is flakier, the 3pm GA or the 7pm GA? I'd thought that the 3pm GA was a clear favorite, but 7pm has set a new milestone.

West Guest
West Guest

Which is flakier??   that's a tough call, as nothing of any substance seems to be coming from either.  Being in close contact with OCCUPY movements in three other cities, I can assure that Denver's is seriously lagging behind.  The destruction of the original occupation in Lincoln Park was devastating to the overall day-to-day energy, and since then with no tents allowed, the homeless are really the only 24/7 occupiers, and most unfortunately a couple of them are constantly unruly.

But thru it all, the THUNDERDOME crew is always AWESOME!!

Thebes
Thebes

I think the lack of "substance" has to due with spending such a large part of the effort fighting against suppression. Few people will sleep on the sidewalk in the cold if they have a choice, so in a way the police and city are largely controlling who's there at night. Of course many of the less destitute 99% could afford a -20F sleeping bag and goretex bivy sack- rather than complaining about flakiness you might go there and serve as an example.

Santa Fe has proportionally more going on for its size, but then the city council let them put up a heated tent and no one got shot with pepper-balls, beaten, and had their camp hauled off. Its a lot easier for them to assemble, so they get more done per occupant at their assembly.

Colorado Mmj Patient
Colorado Mmj Patient

The Freedom Riders also "broke the law" - as did the suffragettes - who got arrested for voting.  And the same thing was said at that time to justify the brutalization of women; "they broke the law".  True American principles put the First Amendment ahead of "camping" laws. The Freedom Riders went into "white only" waiting rooms, peacefully, and they were arrested and attacked and beaten by police because they "broke the law".

Where are the PEOPLE supposed to exercise their rights if not at the Capitol ???And it isn't that the "law" doesn't apply - that's a knee-jerk sound bite - IT'S THAT THERE ARE HIGHER, MORE IMPORTANT LAWS, LIKE THE CONSTITUTION.I can see that you, gekkobear, would have been on the wrong side of history then, as now, because you would have denied people substantive rights over petty ordinances.david

I am complaining that the law unconstitutionally bars the people from assembling in blatant violation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution which under the 14th has been incorporated upon the states and other subordinate jurisdictions.

They ran you off?  And after you got permits and permission to stay in the park, set up your tests, and camp there...

Oh, you didn't get any permission, and they'd have run me off if I tried to set my tent up there last year.

So you're complaining that they're enforcing the law, and expecting you to obey the law, just like everyone else?

How dare they, don't they know that as the representative of the 99% you're entitled to special rights that nobody else gets?  You're super special and should be treated differently with privilege unlike the common masses who wouldn't be allowed to stay after the park closing because you're the ... um... 99% everyday man... but a really special one!

Does that pretty much cover your rant?  Or is there some reason I missed why the law shouldn't apply to you?

Adam Strange
Adam Strange

Eh. I'm with Occupy Dallas. I've found the best way to handle the GA is to figure out what you want to do. Get as much of it done as possible by yourself. Then for go a proposal for an announcement and anyone who wants to get involved with what your doing can get with you after the GA.

What can you do to help the gathering focus on the importance of their original reasons for protest?

West Guest

Fighting Suppression.  Repression.  Oppression.   That is NOT what is going on.Were you in attendance for last night's 7pm GA?  I was, in fact it was Day 39 of my direct involvement.  And disconcertingly, it was one of the more namby-pamby circle-jerks yet.Accordingly, by the time it finally wound down, well over half of the original gathering had exited the proceedings, even Shelby. Sadly, at this point in time, other than the Saturday marches and The Thunderdome kitchen, the Mile High version of OWS is floundering.

I couldn't agree more. I'm on board with the issues they're representing, but their execution has been amateurish at best. How on Earth is a person supposed to help a group that elects a dog as their representative? As if the camp looking like a hobo jungle wasn't embarrassing enough...
