Pat Sullivan, ex-Arapahoe sheriff, suspected of attempted meth trade for sex (VIDEOS)

Sullivan's mug.
Tough to miss the irony: After his arrest for allegedly trying to trade meth for sex with a male acquaintance, Pat Sullivan was incarcerated in the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility, the jail named for him after a distinguished law enforcement career capped by eighteen years as Arapahoe County sheriff. No one expected Sullivan to make such an ignominious return to the public eye -- not even the law enforcers who put him behind bars.

As noted by the Denver Post, Sullivan became an undersheriff in Arapahoe County way back in 1983, rising to the top job a year later. In 1989, he cemented his image as a man still willing to mix it up with the bad guys when he personally rescued a deputy trapped in a hostage situation involving Eugene Thompson, who'd murdered two women -- one of them his mother-in-law. The image of Sullivan squealing away from the scene as an ambulance waited to care for his colleague was indelible.

pat sullivan portrait.jpg
A Sullivan portrait from happier times.
Ten years later, the attack on Columbine High School took place, and while the facility isn't in Arapahoe County, Sullivan played a major role in the subsequent investigation, emerging with his reputation further enhanced. No wonder that when the onetime national sheriff of the year retired from his post in 2002, he was quickly snapped up by the Cherry Creek School District, which made him director of safety and security -- a position he held for the next six years.

Since 2008, Sullivan, who's 68, has mostly been out of the public eye. But on November 17, according to the sheriff's department, "several individuals presented credible information that provided probable cause to believe that Sullivan may be involved in the distribution and use of methamphetamine."

The inquiry that followed culminated yesterday at about 4:15 p.m., when Sullivan was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to trade meth for sex with what's described as a "male acquaintance."

Current Sheriff Grayson Robinson offered the following comment about this bizarre turn of events: "The allegations of criminal behavior involving Pat Sullivan are extraordinarily disturbing... While the arrest of the former sheriff is very troubling, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office continues to ensure that those who are responsible for criminal behavior and the victimization of our community will be held accountable by the criminal justice system. No one, and particularly a current or a former peace officer, is above the law. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office has always demonstrated a solid commitment to our community and to public safety. This is a very sad time for the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office and our community."

At a news conference yesterday, Robinson didn't add much to these comments. However, he did reveal that Sullivan has bonded several people out of several area detention centers over time. He added that this fact is part of the ongoing investigation.

Was Sullivan freeing men from jail that he hoped would become sex partners? That was the implication this morning on Peter Boyles's KHOW talk show. Two people identifying themselves as investigatory sources -- including a man who called himself Mark and said he was featured in "Head Games," a 2006 Alan Prendergast Westword cover story about mental illness among prisoners -- shared a series of incendiary claims. Sample some of them by listening to the 5 a.m. hour, accessible by clicking here.

No doubt we'll be hearing more assertions like these at 8 a.m., when embattled KHOW host Tom Martino and two investigators also working on the story are slated to appear with Boyles. Clearly, Sullivan, who was jailed on a whopping $250,000 bond, is back in the spotlight, and shockingly so.

Look below to see a pair of 9News reports -- the first focusing on the arrest, the second dating back to Sullivan's 2002 retirement as sheriff.

Pat Sullivan rescued my grandma in a blizzard years ago, and I will love that man for the rest of my life for that.  Without him, she would be dead.  He is a Hero!  God bless Pat Sullivan!

Bizarre, shocking story. To all those that say if meth and prostitution were legal that Sullivan's alleged activity wouldn't be a big deal, I say why stop at drugs, and rentng your body for sex? Let's make ALL possible mutually-consensual human behavior legal.  THAT would have no destructive effect on greater society, right?  There is A REASON why certain behaviors and the substances associated with them ARE ILLEGAL: Because the greater society has determined that they are dangerous to our society, or they are immoral.  If the MAJORITY of society thought differently, then those laws would change.  Until they DO, then you run the risk of incarceration if you choose to engage in those activities.

Sullivan should also be charged with ALL the other crimes mentioned in the fact pattern of this case so far --

- Social Security Fraud- Impersonating a Police officer- Impersonating a Government Employee- Attempting to Influence a Public Servant- Pandering (solicitation of prostitution)- Felony Trespassing / Burglary (unwanted in another home, committing a felony at the time)- Possession / Distribution of Meth- Possession of Firearms by a drug addict- Possession of Firearms while committing drug crimes

Were any of his drug crimes within 1000 feet of a school or daycare?

If so, then 2x the prison sentence! ... just like Chris Bartkowicz was charged for marijuana!

More than 3 distinct felonies in this series of events?

If so, then DA Chambers must bring the Habitual Offender enhancement!

Any ordinary citizen in the same circumstances would face the typical prosecutorial "shotgun" of all potential criminal charges.

There should be no special treatment of this perverted meth dealer.

I say let the bitch give him the big bitch and then run her out of office ...whats good for one resident of this county is good for another ...maybe she is reserving the big one for walk aways and trespassers ...

Pat Sullivan was a good man, neighbor and Sheriff. We lived near him during much of his tenure as Sheriff & our kids were friends. Littleton was in lockdown, Pat went in to save his guys & didn't even take time to put on a vest. He was Sheriff of the year and elected Arapaho County Sheriff for his outstanding service. I can't imagine what has happened in Pat's life in recent years but am so saddened by this turn of events.

.... and everyone in Prison started out as an innocent child ...

Your boy deserves THE MAXIMUM penalty under law for his crimes, just like all the others that DA Chambers hangs out to dry.

I don't disagree. He should not be cut any slack. The details reported aren't all crimes but all of it has hit like a fire ball. He hasn't been convicted yet but should certainly be sentenced to the fullest extent!

The most important fact here regardless of race, sex, or addiction is -

Mr Sullivan now get's to experience first hand both sides of the scale. I hope he reflects on is meth arrests especially the violent ones and balances what makes him any different than any meth user...I doubt the little boys will come out with their trick for treats offered by Mr Sullivan oobut I bet if they dig deep enough they are there.

I pulled a lady and her three children from a car before it tipped over onto I 25.. later on the news a person who described himself as a EMT took all the credit...actually he arrived after the work was done, a police officer asked me to stay but i slipped away because the kids were safe the mom was safe my work was done plus i didn't want to get arrested for my unpaid traffic tickets. Don't make a Martyr out of Mr Sullivan heroic act's happen everyday no matter how extraordinary. Sullivan was committing a crime with a drug that goes hand in hand with sex and has no boundaries to it's perversions. What pisses me off is that in every family and in this case, a family of cops- someone new, someone always knows in a family who the meth head is ,you cant miss it it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Congratulations to the Blue Bloods who kept it a secret. They are probably flushing theirs as i type.

This is so sad. He was undoubtely a great man who in his senior years made a mistake. Meth, like crack cocaine and many other artificial chemical compounds, are terrible drugs. I have personally seen a young female try crack, her life almost go down the drain. Fortunately she had good friends that supported her, and the will to change, and her life is now a success story, clean as a whistle. I believe in rehabilitation as a quality of the human spirit. Don't be quick to condemn or throw the first rock, life is indeed ironic and God forbids something like this comes back to you in the form of a drug addicted relative. The fact that he may be gay is irrelevant, that in itself does not make him a bad person.

Sam

Why would someone, who has undoubtedly seen what meth can do to a person over and over and over again throughout his career, want to entice anybody to take it?? That's just fucked up - i don't care how much he wanted to boink that other person.

As a former tax payer in Arapahoe County I find this disturbing. This case is going to be very interesting to see the outcome. Patrick Sullivan should do the maximum sentence for his crimes if convicted. I have faith in the way judicial system is set up he will walk as a free man with his perverted acts and drug dealings unscathed. He has the good ole boy system to cover up his dirty deeds. Cops love to abuse their power. It's happening all over the country.

Stupid old fag, and cops wonder why nobody respects them.

This is like Bernie Kerick in NYC held in the Bernie Kerick detention center till they changed the name, guess they will change the Pat Sullivan jr. detention center to the Rawhide boys club bar & grill detention center.   And I'm sure this is only the tip of the iceberg, with the gay meth cop crowd.

The homophobia here is appalling.

What is appalling is the Sheriff dealing in the same substance that he put people behind bars for. I think it's pretty ironic to see him shackled and jailed in the same detention center that is named after him!

As someone who grew up in Littleton with Pat and his family, I want to say that none of this changes the fact that Pat was a great person who spent years of his life serving the community.  I was in middle-school at Newton, about a block and half from Eugene Thompson when we saw the clips of Pat driving his big Jeep into the line of fire, grabbing his wounded officer, and driving through the fence onto Arapahoe. My heart goes out to him and his family, and I apologize to them for the fact that Pat lived in a community where he surely had to suppress any homosexual tendencies he might have had throughout his life in order to be Sheriff.

Prisons are full of "once great persons" ... who had mothers and neighbors that loved them ...

... many of whom are languishing under Draconian mandatory multi-decade sentences ... or even LIFE for non-violent offenses.

Sullivan deserves THE MAX sentence possible -- "to send a message" .

Tony,

Ole Patty must of been really flying on the meth that night.....shooot drove a jeep right through a house.....sounds like what a lot of meth folks do when running from the cops.

It's ok for the ex sheriff to deal in meth? The very same substance Officer Pat Sullivan and his cops have put people in prison for?

Cmon, at 68, this is surely not his first rodeo.

Also, the irony of being incarcerated at the jail named after you is worthy of the Daily Show.

Wow, this is pathetic.  Even more pathetic than the fact this his distinguished career record is not in ruins, who is having sex with this old creature?  Who wants meth so bad that they are willing to put their privates in this man's nasty, filthy, worm and disease-infected anus?  Ugh.  PATHETIC.

Seriously

"If meth and sex were legal"????  Are you suggesting that Meth amphetamines should be legal?  Have you been smoking a  bit of meth yourself?  Because that is just flat out dumb.

Tony

Why do you want to spend money locking people up for only hurting themselves? I agree meth and sex should be legal, and I'd way rather spend my tax dollars on support & rehabilitation rather than incarceration.

Peter,

Why is it Tom Martino's face looks a lot like these people. He sure talks fast like them. I don't think ole Tommy is ADHD. I think he scores the glass bubble at Freaky's and goes home and smokes the chunky then prances around the house in his brand new panties in a meth induced sex crazed frenzy with that microphone of his shoved so far up his mangina you can hear him live all the way to the space station.

In my opinion of course.

What's unreasonable about the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility being used to detain Patrick J. Sullivan, Jr.?

I expect that the dynamic leadership of Arapahoe County is galvanized by the need to rename the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility -- preferably before Sullivan cops to drug charges.

Robert Chase

If methamphetamine and sex were legal, the absurd question posed (about Sullivan posting bonds) could not arise -- one more reason to change the laws!.

Meth is made out of Crystal Drano and Sudafed tablets. You can't legalize poison. I find it offensive when a fag just doesn't get it I'm straight and then offers free meth, like the Sheriff did to someone. He could have been set up, but Gay men, Gay Bars and Meth is what it is, Denver.

Guest

last time I checked you can buy drano and sudafed at your local grocery store. and poison is legal.. just look at what is in apple and grape juice that is stiil being sold.  that would be arsenic. also, it seems the informant called the ex sheriff numerous times to try and set this up. so it seems "a fag just doesn't get it I'm straight and then offers free meth, like the Sheriff did to someone" is totally off base. thanks for adding nothing to the conversation dipshit.

The offer was probably made in a Gay male Bar.Meth seems to be the drug of choice in Gay male society. There is a Gay male Bar called  The Compound. The chemical ingedients in Meth are called The Compound.Coincidence? I don't think so.

Coincidence that Ted "I didn't inhale" Haggard, Pat "I'm a cop" Sullivan, Jerry "he looked 18" Sandusky and Larry "wide-stance toe-tapper" Craig are all -- White Christians ?

Probably, seems, coincidence...nice way to infer something you clearly have no fucking clue about....clearly you are neither part of the gay community nor very up on who does what drugs, gay or otherwise.  Maybe you need to sit this one out....under a bridge.

Starsprangeld fagger,

Don't get your undies all in a twist. I'm willing to bet you have your condom hanging from the condom tree at the park...and don't act like you have not a clue. And yes meth is a popular drug with gay men...that's why you got so offended !

Tro tro the now huffy one.

Starspringsf
Starspringsf

by the way, everyone knows the drug of choice is in the gay community, as it is in the straight community- alcohol. if you can't figure out why you've got bigger problems than a few homos bothering you.

Starspringsf
Starspringsf

meth is popular with meth users in general. Of course there are people in the gay community that use meth-gay people use drugs and straight people use drugs. exactly what that has to do with this story-other than its is the drug in question-really doesn't mean jack shit. Darling, if seriously pedestrian gradeschool level non-insults are the best you can do, I'm laughing AT you already...loudly.
