From what we understand from past scofflaws and couples who enjoy the use of restraints in the bedroom, being fitted with handcuffs can be painful.

But probably not as painful as the special gift Peter VanVolkinburg is accused of giving a female police officer when she tried cuffing him -- namely, a broken hand.

On Monday at around 10 a.m., according to Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson, an officer spotted a car near the intersection of 29th and Downing that was wanted in connection with a hit-and-run. This morning, Jackson didn't have information about the hit-and-run in question, but he said he understands it wasn't a high-profile incident.

The officer responded by pulling over the vehicle, which was being driven by VanVolkinburg, and began the process of taking him into custody. But after clapping the first cuff on his right wrist, he fought back, breaking the officer's hand in the process before sprinting toward Curtis Park and making his escape.

He was last seen wearing a blue-and-white checkered shirt and -- yes -- a set of handcuffs dangling from one wrist. Bet the DPD would really like to get those back.

At this writing, Jackson says VanVolkinburg is still at large; anyone with clues about his whereabouts is encouraged to call the DPD at 720-913-2000 or Crime Stoppers, 720-913-STOP (7867).

In the meantime, VanVolkinburg is the subject of an arrest warrant, for second degree assault on a police officer, a class three felony. That could prove pretty painful, too.
