Westboro Baptist Church counter-protest at East High champions love over hate (PHOTOS)

Big pics below.
Surprise, surprise: Protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who often threaten to picket certain locations and then fail to show up, actually brought their vile circus to East High School this morning as scheduled. And students and others who reject the WBC's messages of intolerance were ready with a dose of peace and love.

"Those East kids -- one of whom is my son -- were amazing," e-mails Emily Sinclair, who shared her photos of the event, in which dozens of students faced off against four to six WBC haters. She notes that there were "long Facebook conversations all weekend about how to best address this visit." The students "were endearingly loyal to East and wanted to 'look good' for their school," she adds. "Lots of conversations about religion, how to handle antagonists, what the right messages were for their posters.

"The principal, deans I spoke with, cops, etc., were totally behind them and thought the students were upbeat, restrained and smart about this protest," Sinclair notes. "They're making some fine people over there on the Esplanade."

These kids make their community proud. Thank you for being peaceful and civil - and for not giving the WBC the satisfaction they were likely craving by showing up at East. I'd say the students absolutely put them to shame. Go Angels.

I am very proud of my daughter and her friends at East HIgh. They were very smart and peaceful - two qualities to strive for. It is refreshing to see acceptance rather than judgement coming from our kids. Way to go EAST!!!

omg....did anybody read Emily Sinclair's comments?  Are children pawns in some Colorado adult control mechanism?  Read her words....and sit back, and read them again....and again.  I may sound controlling, but I'm just trying to be "fair and balanced".  I understand that you have to protect your children, but are the parents proud of what their children have chosen, or are they proud because they're being herded so easily?

Good for these kids! They not only got to see the First Amendment in action, but they were far more civil and positive than I would have been. I have met WBC members before, including F*ck-pile Freddie, and I try to avoid being around them as I feel that my temper/emotions get the best of me, and that's what they want. I want to commend those kids for having the self-control that I do not have.

Love the post, Jennster. We're going to make it an upcoming Comment of the Day. Congrats.

Fuck-Pile Freddie (Jennster, 2011)...is going to be included in the comment of the day?  I'm new to Colorado, but why are the adults, sooooo emotional, it clouds adult discourse.....in my opinion.Ignorance draws fear, and humans are innately lazy, so you then have controlling adults, whom fear....viscous cycle, Colorado needs to get away from...., again, in my opinion.

I was hoping to come home tonight and find that the anarchists had met the Westboro nuts.  Looks like the Peaceful concept is spreading, as I have seen at least one of the kids in these photos at Occupy Denver.
