Reader: Drunk drivers are more lethal than stoned ones

In our post about a University of Colorado Denver study that found traffic fatalities declined in medical marijuana states, weed advocate Mason Tvert argued that pot smokers drive more cautiously than do those who use alcohol and get behind the wheel. This statement spurred a lively conversation exemplified by the following one-liner.

Samdodge writes:

Drunk drivers kill people, stoned drivers miss their off ramps.

How about not driving under the influence of either?

This is such a ridiculous argument. Impaired driving, regardless of what is impairing you, is dangerous. Whether it's marijuana, alcohol or simply lack of sleep, you should not drive if you are impaired. It's not just about your own safety; it's about the safety of others on the road!

Marijuana doesn't impair, it enhances.  Missing the exit ramp is not impaired, it's because you're possibilities opened along with your mind to find something beyond that exit ramp.  Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?  I've been smoking pot before I drive for 20 years now without a problem, which proves marijuana doesn't impair my ability to drive.  Marijuana is good for driving PERIOD!

The average person can be impaired by MJ with overuse but won't feel much like driving at that point. As far as MJ and driving go, I'm no too concerned until the MJ gets mixed with some alcohol for a muliltplier effect.  It's always that damn alcohol that gets ya in trouble!

I'm seriously in agreement with the recent findings that alcohol isn't needed if you have marijuana.  When I have bud and hash, I really don't need alcohol, and can even say 'NO' to alcohol if presented with the opportunity to get drunkard.... When I'm stoned, alcohol, kinda seems stupid, reckless, and a waste of money.  Jah Bless the High Country and the Great Pot State of Colorado!
