Ron Paul banners on overpasses slow traffic across Denver

Categories: News, Politics

Ron Paul.
Shortly after Texas Governor Rick Perry invoked Tim Tebow at last night's Republican presidential debate, followers of another candidate, Ron Paul, delivered a message to Denver-area drivers -- one that may have pissed off as many of them as it inspired.

Unknown Paul supporters hung banners on a series of highway overpasses, causing slowdowns system-wide.

According to Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Stacy Stegman, the banners, which called for an end to military actions overseas in addition to touting Paul's presidential aspirations, decorated multiple overpasses on I-25, I-225 and C-470. In addition, a reliable source -- my beloved -- spotted one on I-70.

At this point, CDOT doesn't have a final count. But Stegman says department personnel couldn't wait until after rush hour to begin taking the banners down, even though workers' presence typically makes the usual congestion worse. "We don't know if they're properly secured," she says, "and they could cause an accident if they blow down on cars. It's definitely a risk. We've had that kind of thing happen in the past."

As the presidential election grows nearer, does Stegman expect more situations like this? Not really. Big-time political operations rarely hang banners on overpasses, she notes: "It's more like signs in right-of-ways. We take those down and try to save them -- and we'll give them back if campaigns want to pick them up."

Not so banners, since hanging them from overpasses breaks a "wide range of different laws," she says. "It could fall under abandoned property, littering, all kinds of stuff." And while CDOT cameras are unlikely to record perpetrators in the act, "if law enforcement sees them, they can be charged with a crime.

"Bottom line, it's illegal to do that," she stresses. "And it's a shame we've had to waste resources taking them down to begin with."

If Ron Paul becomes president, she may be changing her tune.

Ron Paul's poison fans are fortunately outnumbered by responsible, constructive limited government conservatives; this was NOT the case 4 years ago.

Poison Fans are folks who claim to love Ron Paul but refuse to participate in the GOP primary to get him on the ballot. Yet, they LOVE to make public spectacles in Dr. Paul's name which inevitably tarnish his credibility in the eyes of some folks who WILL participate in the GOP primary. They tend to be very self-centered and ego-addicted, self-labeled 'libertarians' who may or may not be a member of the LP. They love the idea of Ron Paul but not the reality that he is a limited government conservative seeking the GOP nomination. They cannot grasp his most important message: that abandoning the GOP into the hand of the enemies of liberty is NEVER a reasonable strategy for defending liberty.

I saw at least 35 of these signs on my way to work, and I saw DOT people taking them down too.  The messages I remember on the signs were things like, Fed up with the Fed, End the Drug War, Get the Troops Home, and some liberty and freedom messages.  I can't believe they would rush around the way they did to keep people from seeing these messages.  I hope these guys do it again.  I'd help them!

Yeah Denver Ron Paul Supporters!!!  Kudo's to the Champions of the Constitution!  St Louis never said a word about banners over the interpasses during the last election....they must be a little more tolerant than Denver.

Ron Paul resonates with the public because freedom isn't a phrase that's owned by a party. Without the filter of the corporate media Paul's idea are seen as common sense and reflect the very foundation of the founding of this country. The establishment is worried but in the words of Paul, "there is no army or government that can stop an idea who's time has come". Paul is for "we the people". The media makes fun and ridicules people who support Paul because they are supporting an idea and not a party. Every candidate wishes they had the fervent support that Paul does. America's greatness comes from our ideas on freedom and liberty, not from our bombs. Paul gets it, I get it, and a great number of American's get it.

Sorry, kids, but if Ron Paul actually stood a chance of winning, he would have been Wellstoned years ago.

Not quite as entertaining as the time "Snape Kills Dumbledore" highway banners appeared in England.

I really hope the Americans wake up soon. Ron Paul seems to be the ONLY choice to save the US. This is probably the most important decision you will ever make. Vote for Ron Paul and save your country.

I hope this was sabotage by another campaign and not stupidity on the part of some overzealous supporters of Ron Paul.

If you voted for Obama in 2008 do you need to reregister as a Republican in order to participate in Ron Paul's primary?

Stupid question I know but I really dont give a fuck usually lol

Ron Paul supporters wouldn't feel the need to do this if they got a fair shake from the media. For example, Chris Wallace said that if Ron Paul wins the Iowa caucus, it discredits Iowa because he can't win the nomination.

Label them terrorists. Put them in indefinite detention and assassinate a few. Not possible? Yah, wanna bet!

If you want more wars, more torture, more assassinations, more drone attacks, more erosion of civil liberties, more debt, more spending, more greed and graft, etc. Ron Paul is NOT your candidate.

If you are looking for liberty, fiscal conservatism, limited government and low taxes, transparency, safety and security, Constitutional government and a humble man with integrity that leaves me speechless, RON PAUL IS YOUR MAN..

Ron Paul is a tidal wave that is building a huge swell accross America. The media is beginning to realize Dr. Paul is the real deal. He will landslide in Iowa and N.H., and then the word will really be out. Obama will get destroyed by Paul, it's been fifty years in the making, but the President will once again be of the people, for the people.

Was it really the banners that slowed traffic, or the fact that CDOT insisted on getting them removed before rush hour to avoid greater exposure?

I believe that Americans are tired of all the WARS and LIES.

Ron Paul has been speaking TRUTH to POWER for 35 years.

It is time for this GREAT NATION to CHANGE COURSE!

This is OUR COUNTRY, it is our DUTY to PRY it out of the HANDS of the ESTABLISMENT, and TAKE IT BACK!

STAND UP and do the RIGHT THING...

Vote for PEACE, LIBERTY and PROSPERITY.

Vote for RON PAUL 2012

The tragedy of this comment apparently recognizes Candidate Paul’s positions as among the most sound yet the author forfeits his own political capacity towards electing RP to office

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.... Thanks for that.  I needed a good laugh.  By the way, what does "wake up" entail?  I hear so many spouting off about the need to "wake up" but that's as far as it goes.  Would you please elaborate?  Me, I'd rather stay asleep.  I'm pretty sure the world will keep on turning if this douche is not elected.

You NEED to register as a republican by January 9th I think that's the day. Either way do it as soon as you can it took me less than 5 minutes.

Sueannporter

yes, you need to register as a Republican (or independent) in most states to vote for Ron Paul. Each state is different.

socal63

yes, they even like him as well, ive heard alot of stories about how horrified and upset the left is with their poor choice of a lying president and Ron Paul not only makes sense to them, but has never flip-flopped and always been steadfast in his views, so they are even switching or talking alot on forums and such of dong it in droves to vote for him as well since ol barack hussein has proven he cant be trusted.

Ron paul is attracting large following clear across the political spectrum, left, center, right, occupy, tea party, etc...

Go Ron Paul!!!

Who gives a crap what Chris Wallace thinks? Wallace is in bed with foreign interests because that's who signs his checks. 96% of all media are owned by corporations with major interest in continuing war and militarism around the world (think foreign oil). Gloom and fear bring people to watch news. If Ron Paul is elected and policies actually change for the better, Wallace and his like will be less-watched.

they've already labelled Paul supporters as terrorists.  It was in the 2009 MIAC report.

No way!  I believe that the government belongs to us; I don't want to dismantle 90% of it except for the police and the military (albeit a shrunken and domestic one).  We need to educate the people of the United States as to the meaning of the word "commonweal" -- then provide for it!

I've been reading your posts.  Normally I'm nice and try and reason with people but you're a total dickwad.   Stay sleeping.  If you have any kids, go spit in their face while you're at it.  Dumbass.

check this link, find your state, and it'll tell you rules for your primary/caucus.  The rules may differ by party (i.e. the dem primary may be open when the rep primary is closed)

http://www.fairvote.org/congre... look into whether your state has a caucus as well as a primary, in many states the primary is a "beauty contest" but delegates are elected at a caucus on a seperate day.  The delegates are what is important, delegates nominate the canidate.

Buzz Fisher

Some states that isn't the case (N.H. has an open primary, and Minnesota has an open caucus) but yeah, most states require party registration. Check to see the rules for your state and if you still have time to register....we need all the support we can get. http://musicbomb2012.weebly.co...

not to mention reporting on a war is a lot more fun than reporting on peace.  War is good for ratings, and paper circulation.

...if dh's comment strikes you as having any validity, perhaps you might consider doing a story on the actual phenomenon. Clearly your readership is more interested in taking about Paul's policies and the strength and political makeup of his grassroots support than they are about a bad rush hour and charges for abandonment of property and littering.

Brian Parsons
Brian Parsons

This is inaccurate, there is a difference between dismantling the government and restructuring according to the constitution.  This would put the money and power back in the states hands.  When government is local, you can petition your government with grievances and be heard.  Good luck with petitioning the President or your Senators.

You're probably right about that. Got a little carried away. But I'm feeling naive enough to think of ron paul as a bit of a different breed. Hope, or something like that.

Well, Ron Paul just seems like just another politician, sort of like how you just seem like another douchebag making comments on an anonymous internet blog.  The irony is breathtaking.
