Tim Tebow 5th worst QB in NFL according to ESPN's obviously confused quarterback metric

Categories: Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow.
Even Tim Tebow haters have got to be amused by the way his unconventional play has left so-called NFL experts tongue-tied and confused. And even long-established formulas are worthless when it comes to illustrating how he wins.

Prime example: ESPN's Total QBR quarterback ranking system, which can't figure out The Chosen One.

As pointed out by the Washington Post, Tebow is singlehandedly destroying the credibility of the system, as the Week 13 stats demonstrate.

Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers sits atop the rankings -- no argument there, since he's having a historic season -- and Drew Brees and Tom Brady certainly deserve to be in the second and third slots, respectively. But the further down the list you read, the more dubious the roster gets, with the bottom section in particular inviting debate -- especially among the Tebow faithful. Timmy is listed in the 30th position out of 34 hurlers, with only the Cardinals' Kevin Kolb, the Rams' Sam Bradford (currently being destroyed by none other than failed Denver head coach Josh McDaniels), the Colts' woeful Curtis Painter and Jacksonville's Blaine Gabbert behind him.

This despite having led the team to a 6-1 record, as well as defeating six quarterbacks ranked higher than he is: the Dolphins' Matt Moore (No. 11), the Raiders' Carson Palmer (No. 19), the Jets' Mark Sanchez (No. 29), the Chiefs' Matt Cassel (No. 21), the Chargers' Philip Rivers (No. 16) and the Vikings' Christian Ponder (No. 20).

No, Tebow didn't manufacture all these Ws by himself. He got an enormous assist from his defense, led by super-rookie Von Miller. But in several games, he willed the team to victory via last-minute drives. And his never-say-die attitude has proven to be contagious. He clearly wasn't only along for the ride.

Given those factors, Tebow's placement as the fifth worst quarterback on the NFL says a lot less about him and a lot more about the uselessness of Total QBR.

Look at the QBR in the fourth quarter.

Don't know why loving Tim you are labeled a conservative.  It happens I am and damn proud of it, but we are talking football.  I guess everyone who hates him are liberals.  That could be true since the left are mindless and brainless.  The fifth worse rated quarterback is WINNING. I don't suggest this is because of his religion.  Think God is too busy to watch football, but if he did, he would be TEBOWING.

Tebow stinks. I mean, he's only won 5 in a row (first time since Elway played in Denver). The guy is a winner, period. I'm a Falcons fan and would take Tebow as our QB in a second.    http://www.whatthehellbook.com...

Tebow is Steve Young's running mixed with Trent Dilfer at the height of his career as a game management quarterback.

Game management allows the team to win.

Like a good point guard that passes the ball to scorers in scoring position, the pass is more like an assist than a three point basket.

Give me a player who can flawlessly execute and I can win..

Philip Rivers has lots of passes and lots of interceptions, but of course he ranks above Tebow..

Logical of course not, but then as the saying goes, there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

You mean there are four QB's in the NFL worse than Tebow?  Wow, that's hard to believe.   The Broncos are winning DESPITE Tebow, not because of him.  They've played a string of mediocre to bad teams, and their defense and running attack is what's winning those games.  And just barely winning them.  They struggled last week to beat a Vikings team that the rest of the NFL is beating like a drum.  Same goes for KC, they barely beat a team that can't score against anyone.

If the Broncos had a real QB, they'd be winning these games easily.  The team is winning because the defense and the running game came around.  They are winning because McGahee is playing like a Pro-Bowl running back and carrying the team on his back offensively.  And they are winning because they play in one of the worst divisions in football and because they play an incredibly weak schedule because of this.  KC and SD have a hard time even playing against the rest of the league, and a weak Miami team just clobbered the Oakland team that Tebow and the Broncos struggled to beat.

The worst mistake the Broncos could make would be to mis-read this record and think Tebow is somehow their QB of the future.

Everyone fails to realize that there isn't I in team. Its a team effort what wins. I agree that a quarterback must have composure on the field to keep the offense together. But you could win games with defense. Espn is right for his low rankings and until Tebow proves that he is a True quarterback, then his rankings should come up.

If you look at the first three quarters compared to the fourth quarter you will see two vastly different quarterback according to the QBR.

That last line paints quite a picture, Barbara. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The worse mistake anyone could make is reading anything you post, loser.

Care to explain what happen in the first 5 games when we had a "real" golly gee wiz QB?

Tebow the "QB of the future?" Hardly.

I still stand by my assertion that all the Broncos are doing is trying to make Tebow look as good as possible so that they can unload him at the end of the season for a QB draft pick.

Interesting point of view, Macsplusmore. Thanks for weighing in.

very true he is a very different qb in the fourth quarter. But the question you should ask yourself is why are we behind in the fourth quarter against bad teams? because tebow couldnt get anything going for 3 and a half quarters. Ihave lived in denver my whole life and have watched the broncos since I was a child. I can tell you that this is short lived. Tebow has been terrible for this team. We had early injuries with Orton, and no running game. We re-vamped the defense from a 4-3 to a 4-4 to put pressure on the q.b.

Yeah Michael, I think he's a great player to have around in the locker room because he is very motivational (I would have to give that more credit for the wins). Obviously Denver has a good team. Compare him to Cam Newton. Honestly, I thought Tebow was better than Cam until he proved me wrong this year. Btw, I'm not a 'Tebow hater' I'm just a facts guy.

I agree that there's one bottom line. But he doesn't win games by himself. I'm not back seating him. Read the article.

There is one bottom line in the football business, Winning, and the guy wins, his TEAM likes winning with him, and that pays the bills. You can back seat quarterback till we all turn green but the guy wins and in the end that is all that counts!
