Have something you want to ask Alex Martinez, Denver's new Manager of Safety?

This is your chance: Westword writers will be meeting with the former Colorado Supreme Court justice this morning, to get an overview of the office and ask about some specific issues, including the recent rulings overturning police firings by the last Manager of Safety.

One thing we won't need to ask about: the rumor that the city would skip hiring a new Independent Monitor to replace Richard Rosenthal, who left that job earlier this month. Yesterday, the mayor's office announced that Michael Hancock had created a screening committee to fill that position.

Here's that release:

Mayor Michael B. Hancock today announced the screening committee to carry out the interview and evaluation process for Denver's next Independent Monitor.

"I believe we have a strong and diverse set of community members who will work collaboratively to find the best candidates," Mayor Hancock said. "The Office of the Independent Monitor provides a critical service to our community. We will ensure there is a robust public input process to appoint a dynamic leader who will help to improve transparency, accountability and public confidence in our safety departments."

The screening committee is as follows:

1. Mary Davis, President of the Citizen Oversight Board (appointed pursuant to ordinance)

2. Paul Lopez, District 3 Councilman for the City and County of Denver (selected by City Council president)

3. Judge Claudia Jordan, Denver County Court Judge (selected by the Mayor)

4. Nita Mosby Henry, Director of the Career Service Authority (appointed pursuant to the ordinance)

5. Dr. Joseph Sandoval, Professor at Metropolitan State College of Denver (selected by the Mayor)

The Mayor is responsible for appointing two members to the committee, including a current or retired judge and someone with "extensive knowledge of internal police investigations or the monitoring of internal police investigations."

Steps moving forward:

The committee will review and approve the position announcement to solicit candidates for the position.

The Career Service Authority ("CSA") will assist in the search, as is common practice, which will be conducted nationally.

The CSA will provide a list of applicants to the committee who will conduct its interview and evaluation process.

The committee will coordinate a public input process and provide the Mayor up to three final candidates.

The Mayor will appoint the Monitor from a list of three recommended candidates provided to him by the selection committee.

The appointment of the Monitor shall not be effective until confirmed by City Council.

But there are still plenty of issues to discuss with Martinez, including the anonymous letter about Denver Police Chief Robert White sent to the mayor on Wednesday. Have a question for Martinez? Post it below.

Three years ago this month, Alex Landau was beaten bloody by Denver police officers -- and the Denver Police Department has still not finished its investigation of the incident. Read "Black and Blue."
