Dave Logan linked by Mullen to recruiting violations at the school

The fallout from Mullen High School's firing of mega-successful celebrity football coach Dave Logan has been long, loud and contentious. And the chatter will likely ramp up again in the wake of a meeting last night at which Mullen officials accused Logan's staff of committing recruiting violations -- a remarkable assertion given that most observers of high school athletics have believed the Logan regime has been engaged in this practice for years.

One of Colorado's best athletes ever, Logan, who's currently a KOA radio host and voice of the Denver Broncos, has avoided getting into details of his dismissal on the air, and he's done his best to take the high road in statements released about the situation. While he's typically been extremely accessible, he has not responded to multiple interview requests from Westword.

In contrast, many of Logan's current and former players have been burning up Facebook and other social media outlets complaining about the decision to send him packing -- and that's not to mention a petition signed by hundreds of students. He clearly engenders a tremendous amount of loyalty among the young men he's mentored.

Is that because of the part he played in luring them to Mullen, a Catholic high school? I'm a member of the Chatfield High School community because all three of my children graduated from the institution, where Logan once coached. As such, I know well that Logan led Chatfield to the 2001 state championship with a big assist from future NFL player LenDale White, who did not live in immediate area. And over the years since he left, Mullen has cherry-picked fine athletes who would otherwise have attended Chatfield. Such moves didn't lead to hatred or resentment of Logan, who remains a popular figure. But even if observers don't have incontrovertible evidence that recruiting has taken place, the vast majority of them are convinced it's true.

That's not the same as proof, of course, and neither are the three state championships won by Mullen during Logan's tenure. But recruiting-oriented allegations made by Mullen CEO/President Ryan Clement, part of a new administration committed to Lasallian education, certainly restate this theme.

It remains to be seen if this controversy puts the kibosh on Logan's possible leap to Cherry Creek High School; current Creek coach Mike Brookhart has stepped down, potentially making room for Logan. But whatever happens, the subject of high school recruiting, which is usually debated in whispered tones, is suddenly front and center.

Why would he have to recruit illegally when just the name Dave Logan brings people that want their child coached by him.  I do not think having a reputation that attracts talent is the same thing as illegal recruiting. This is getting ugly and my heart goes out to the players who will ultimately pay the price. Hang tough Mullen Football- we sure hate having to play against you-but we sure do wish you the best!

Clement is a scumbag.....Fact is he is a former HS Qb stud that owns a company that mentor and builds Qbs of the future. He asked Logan to be on his staff and Logan said no. So now they bring this garbage up. Recruiting is an interesting word. Bottom line is every school has some level of open enrollment and Rejis, Mullen, Valor etc are completely open. That is if you can afford it. Many students get aid based on need. Do some boys choose Mullen primarily to play Football? YUP, but I also know a kid that is driving three districts over to play for Columbine this year that is in NO WAY in their district. The bottom line is Clement sent a letter last week to the parents that in NO WAY was Logan or his staff suspected of any wrong doing. Now that the vast majority of the parents are calling for him and The CEO to resign, this comes up.. SELF REPORTED!!!!!!   Logan was a mentor to these kids and a great leader. Clement and Gmelich have an agenda that Dave Logan did not fit

It is sad that if in fact there is a recruiting violation it is placed entirely on Dave Logan. My son DID get recruited to go to Mullen. However it was Coach Christiansen who did it. After that it Jay Madden. The practice of recruiting is MULLEN's and has been for years WAY before logan. Now they are tired of it and want a way to get the recruited kids OUT. Period. Don't put this on him!!!

Its about time this comes out! He has been doing this ever since his days at Arvada West. Look at the top players for all of his high school teams and see how long they lived in the area where they played high school football. Example....Brandon Marshall bought a house by Mullen so that his nephew Rayshon Williams could play for Mullen, Brandon also happens be his legal guardian.

no one has to buy a house to attend Mullen, it's a private school. I went to Mullen and lived in Evergreen.  I had friends that bussed or drove an hour to school for the opportunities Mullen provided for them compared to their "in district" public school. If your paying to attend a school then your asking for the best academically and in sports.

Mullen has several academic programs: 1) the intellectually gifted. 2) the above Average student. 3) The football player program.  Some of the staff are completely upset that a good majority of the Football player did not even score at an acceptable level on the exam to get into Mullen but the director of admission found a way for the athletes to be accepted into the program.  This takes away spots for students that actually believe in getting a good education.  However,  Mullen is just as dis-functional as any public institution when it come to students being successful in life.   Everyone knows that Logan recruited the best athletes from all over the region.  Kids from Longmont, Boulder, Castle Rock, Aurora, Denver, Jefferson County.  The list is endless.  Even some of these athletes where given scholarships to attend because they did not have the resources to pay for the education themselves, and I can guarantee that it was not an academic scholarship as they say.  It was a sports scholarship.  Nobody gets rid of a coach with a winning record unless there is some kind of violation with regards to recruiting issues, inappropriate behavior, violation of trust, theft, and other character issues.  Anyone who can buy a team can win games.  When you seduce the players that they will have better opportunity to play at the collegiate level if they play for you.

Who cares?, Logan is just filling a niche.  Parents decide where to send their kids when they are starting high school and sometimes even earlier, by deciding where to live  They either put their kid on the football-factory-might-hit-the-scholarship-or-NFL-lotto track or a track to prepare them for college scholastics and a meaningful career.  So how many kids were affected by this recruiting?, 10 or 20?  And wasn't that a positive affect, because they received a Mullen education?

Don't hate the Player, hate the Game.

Hey concerned citizen,

Please, think intelligently before answering ignorantly!!!

You want to get on here and hit Mullen or piss on Logan, then fine! Don't bring the kids into this.

There are many reasons for someone to not test well. And.... FYI.... there are several SMART" students, who are not in sports, from all over the region that go to Mullen.

Done, I know quite a few smart students who attend Mullen. Thanks for the post.

There's a well-known saying that goes: "To prevent the abuse of power, eliminate the power."

Along those lines, I'm wondering if it's time again to start discussing de-coupling athletics from the school systems, in favor of organizing private clubs.

Ah, the whole "the dumb jock took a space away from the brilliant student" argument.  Sorry, that doesn't fly.  Because in this world, we all have a spectrum of talents.  "Dumb" football players engender school spirit and entertain us, just like "brilliant" academic or debate teams.  So what?, a few recruited dumb guys with better talents to entertain got in, while a few above-average bookworms didn't.  I'm sure that the above-average bookworm will get his or her good education elsewhere, and in 10 years will be paying the dumb jock with the Mullen diploma to put some whipped cream on their double-decaf macchiatto.

I live in the chatfield area and have lived here since the school opened. I wouldn't send my kids there if you paid ME.

Oh but I know of recruiting violations on one of their sports teams. Anyone care? Doubtful.

If Logan is innocent, he needs to state so on the air. Make it known that he did not commit any violations. If he is found to have lied, then KOA and the Denver Broncos need to cut ties. If there is no proof, then the president and CEO of Mullen needs to go. It's pretty simple. Either you are innocent or you are not. Funny how this man who uses the KOA airs to talk above the fray and down to some callers, is so very quiet and is unreachable for comment when it comes to his career and questions over his actions. Pathetic.
