Photo contest: Michael Hancock wants you to show your love for recycling

Calling all Denver recyclers: Mayor Michael Hancock and Denver Public Works' Denver Recycles are asking you to show some Valentine's Day love and support for a more eco-friendly city.

They've announced a photo contest with a chance to win tickets to Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, a Colorado Avalanche game and a ParkSmart Denver gift card.

Contestants are asked to submit creative photos of their purple recycling carts. "We'll be looking for creativity, how funny they are, if they're cute, are people showing what they are recycling," says program administrator Becky Goyton, from Denver Public Works.

And if you're really serious about winning, be smart about it. "We're looking for accuracy so we'd hate to see them put a huge piece of styrofoam in the picture because we don't collect that," Goyton says.

  • Email a digitial photo to DenverRecycles@DenverGov.org by noon on February 14, Valentines Day

  • Include a name, phone number and address

  • Photo must include your Denver Recycles purple cart, without any permanent markings on it (stickers, spray paint, etc.) -- the carts are Denver City property, so it's considered vandalism

  • Photo should illustrate your appreciation for your purple recycling cart, how or what you recycle at home, etc.

  • Digital photo should be a minimum of 500 KB and a maximum of 1000 KB

  • One photo per household

  • If you're a recycling newbie, check out what can be recycled here. If you you don't have a purple recycling cart but would like to participate, no worries. You can sign up to receive a cart here.
