Photos: Sydney Spies submits another yearbook photo from sexy shoot

sydney spies third cropped.jpg
Big photos below.
Durango High student Sydney Spies turned heads when she protested yearbook editors' rejection of a sexy senior photo -- a stance that landed her on the Today show. The latest? Her mom, Miki, tells us that today, Sydney will submit a third yearbook photo after two previous ones from a shoot sampled below were nixed -- and there's no guarantee the same thing won't happen again.

Here's the first photo that editors refused to publish:

sydney spies vertical.jpg
The reported rationale? The image was deemed unacceptable because it violated the school dress code, which calls for tops that "fully cover the chest, back, abdomen and sides of the student."

Due to this response, Spies turned in a second shot:

sydney spies photo 2.jpg
This one was also a no-go, Miki reveals. In her words, "The editors said they wanted to maintain their award-winning status, and they felt it wasn't professional."

This assertion frosts Sydney, Miki notes, because the editors originally approved the first photo "by a four-to-one vote. But then the adviser and the principal got involved, and the editors changed their minds.

"I think the editors truly believe they weren't influenced," she concedes. Still, the involvement of the administration in the decision strikes Sydney as objectionable. "That's what she's most upset about," Miki says. "A lot of people missed the point of this whole story, which is that there are eight states in the United States that have student press laws in place that don't allow this kind of thing, and Colorado is one of those states. The administration overstepped their boundaries." She adds that "we've had a couple of teachers come to us on the down-low, telling us there was definitely pressure not to run the photo."

Early reports suggested that the Spies family would consult with a Denver lawyer over this issue, and Miki says "a couple of people have come forward and offered to pay for an attorney." At this point, however, they're undecided about whether to push a legal challenge, and prefer to wait until they find out what kind of response Sydney's third photo receives.

At this writing, Miki declines to specify which photo Sydney submitted from a shoot recently posted online by the photography shop in question, Thru the Lens Fine Portraits. But she confirms that "she's not submitting a little cutesy one. She's submitting a model-type photo."

If the third shot runs afoul of editors, Miki believes "they're scrutinizing it too much" -- although she doesn't accuse them of turning down everything for fear of looking as if they're bending to public pressure.

She admits to being "shocked" by the amount of media coverage Sydney's quest has received -- and when asked if she's been upset by online commenters questioning her parenting, she stresses that "I didn't originally want her to use that first photo. But it was her decision, and I stood behind her. My parents didn't stand behind me on anything, and I'm not going to be that way. I stand by my children."

She's also heard from "people in California and Florida and Las Vegas and New York, who say, 'That's nothing. You should see our yearbook photos.' They can't believe these photos would garner so much attention."

How's Sydney handling all the scrutiny? "She's doing great," Miki says. "She's very strong. She's obviously got the temperament to handle controversy."

Look below and page down to see more photos from the Thru the Lens shoot. Hard to imagine editors turning thumbs-down on some of them -- but others are more along the lines of the previous two. Wonder which one she picked....

The principal and the advisor were involved in removing the picture from the the yearbook. The school faculty made the call to remove the picture. The picture should have been published since it was approved by the yearbook editors. The picture is beautiful and appropriate for the yearbook.

Finally, loosen up and have a great time with all of it. You don't want to be rigid and tense while you are learning how to dance. Be willing to experiment and to see yourself as a great dancer. Hopefully there will be some mirrors in the classroom too so that you can see for yourself how great you look. This will increase your self confidence for when you are ready to get out there on the dance floor.

The length of the dance lessons as well as when they are held is important to. Generally they should be at least one hour in length per session for you to really learn a great deal in them. The class can run for several weeks or even many months depending on what you are going to learn while you are in it. Make sure you can commit to that frame of time. Some programs even offer childcare services so ask about them if you are worried about getting a sitter so you can attend the various dance lesson classes.

Slut, not a slut, maybe a slut, partially a slut...who cares? If she did not have the class or brains to know it, she was told, more than once. This is NOT appropriate for yearbook!

Penthouse here she comes with a stripper pole follow up. Mom you should support your kids when they make good choices and redirect them when they are not.

She would be great if she were applying for a dancing job in a strip club.  But for a school yearbook, her photo is inappropriate.  Apparently she squealed loud enough to get our attention.  The question is, what else would she be willing to do for fame and money.  Probably anything.  And mom would certainly approve.

There are some adorable pics in here that would have been more than suitable for the yearbook.  She and her mother are out for their 15 secs of fame...15 secs has passed, so move on

Folks, this is all about money....I think the picture is very unacceptable for a school yearbook (That is from a school principal's perspective), but she is obviously (or someone she knows) very clever.   I am sure she was aware this would get her some notoriety (surely not to this to extent, I'm guessing), and from that possible future "deals."  As it is turning out...TV spots, national exposure (no pun intended) and I am sure several magazines, from teen fashion to Playboy are taking a look at this and establishing whether or not this could impact sales....

....I know there is outrage and some folks see it as an issue of free speech, others see it as an issue of school rules and still others see it as abusing (perhaps that is a strong word) children...DON"T BE CONFUSED!  It's all about money...that is the American way.

Those people that are part of the "Occupy Wall street" movement...They should be occupying this girl's home because she is just as guilty of greed as any Wall Street investor!

I like the one where she's sitting in the field of flowers. I don't get why she wants such sexual pics for a yearbook photo. This isn't about freedom of expression or woman's rights - this is about this girl having a serious lack of self-respect. That's very sad.

I think its a good picture but not something that belongs in a school yearbook. It shows to much skin and the picture belongs in a magazine of some kind the school yearbook was the wrong place to want to show these kind of pictures off.

Hottathenwingz

I don't know where you all are from but this is America and this is a school photo. These photos are a disgrace to her character. And they should be a disgrace to her parents. But maybe there is something going on in the house hold that we don't know about. Its none of my business so um not going to get into that. But no parent should support the production and exploitation of their children. A yearbook photo is suppose to leave a legacy, but in this photo it appears she is trying to send a message. There are thousands of ways that she could look sexy or feel sexy for her year book photo without looking like this. How is she even able to wear something like this in high school. What happened to her fingertip test. Why is her stomach showing. See this is how girls like her come up missing on the news. But they don't show you these photos. They show you the ones that tell the public she was sweet and innocent, when in fact she is posed like a playboy bunny in a school year book. You cant be that ignorant. Pretty or not it is inappropriate for school and definitely a year book.

Amber Hoggard

I think she looks great but it was to provocative for a yearbook. There are several more appropriate ones. I think the school made the right choice.

She is Hot And Pretty these girls talking about her are upset because she is everything they are not and everything these girls will never be .heck there are ugly teachers that hate her because the are older and ugly and all these women and girls are ugly brown haired and red haired and other races . After seeing the pics, albeit she is a pretty girl, the photos are racy and do not belong in a high school year book.

um coming from a cali girl all you HATERS need to just stop.. i mean come on.. she wanted to step out of thee mold.. and ya her photos are a little racy.. but why do you care durango?? school spirit? give me a break.. half of you just want thee same attention.. and thee other half are stuck in thee black&white of good&bad. grow up.. if she's got it.. why can't she flaunt it? Everyone keeps saying how this isn't an issue and thee media is blowing it out of preportion.. yet her name is still in your mouths.. why don't you just stop "focusing on it" and move on? She's cute and she knows it.. and she wanted to be remembered in her own way.. you guys have no sense of individuality.. why would anyone want to be like everyone else?

SYDNEY COME TO CALIFORNIA.. you would fit in way better. <33

You give such good advice.  I totally agree with you on the idea that she should move to California.  She would definitely fit in better.   I recommend Orange County.

I disagree strongly with the editors' statements that the "Thru The Lens" photographs may be considered "unprofessional", I do feel that they are not appropriate for a high school yearbook. Sydney is a very attractive young lady and she should have the photos arranged into a proper portfoliio if, as it appears, she wants to try to break into professional modelling. She should, however, have taken a more traditional shot for the yearbook. But then, she and her mother would not be enjoying all of this national publicity.

This girl has something more marketable than  PH.D, SEX APPEAL!  Get over it. If she is smart she can profit from it. If she is dumb, someone else will. If she has any legal talent other than posing that is just icing.

Can I get into trouble looking at this photo! i am having bad thought about a 17 year old

Ok, my question is-WHY pic the most controversial pictures to go into the yearbook?!  This girl is a gorgeous girl and should have a little more self respect.  I LOVE THE PIC of her standing there just giving the IDGAF look....Why not submit that?!  REALLY? I think that this girl is asking for the attention shes getting, and like my 5 year old knows...EVERY DECISION HAS CONSEQUENCES, whether POSTIVE or NEGATIVE....theres ALWAYS a consequence.  Suck it up girl, your gorgeous & should have considered the above before choosing the raciest picture of yourself.

She could very well become a model someday. But that has nothing to do with a school picture for a year book. How hard is it to just dress/pose decently for one picture? She can dress and model however she wants to, put it on facebook, advertise, whatever, but it's not respectful to her school and her classmates, or herself for that matter, as a yearbook photo.

you girls are mad because she looks better than you, well then you shouldn't be so ugly looking. Just let have the pic for crying out loud grow up you girls are going to become adults soon and your still acting like 2nd graders.

Hey Sydney, you got hosed.  There were  photos that could have been posted but I really feel that the jealous haters had it in for you.  You will find out very quickly that if you are extraordinary in any category, be it looks , brains, or talent, the losers that never stick their necks out for anything will tear you down.  It makes them feel superior.

Students don't have rights, a yearbook isn't your personal platform. Stop whining and learn something besides how to be an attention whore.

I am very liberal but she looks like a porn star.  Who are her parents to support these slutty pictures?  Enough of her in the media.  She does it for fame.  She is a famewho...e.

This is clearly just some free advertising. She got her photos out; six pages of them.

As for the yearbook editors - just crop a photo down to her face. It's not that complicated.

Genericemail1333

Honestly, I don't see the big deal. If those are the pictures she wants to show, that's her right. The year book shouldn't be concerned over reputation, it should be concerned with showing the students how they want to be remembered. That's what yearbooks are for.

Crispy60

Some of the photos are fine and others are purposely posed to be provocative. This girl and her parents know exactly what they're doing in pushing the limits to garner national attention and potential lawsuit money. Given some of your ridiculous comments on here, the school systems should just not have any standards of dress whatsoever.

Mouse

All I see here is an attention whore and an enabling mother who doesn't have the common sense/balls to tell her daughter, "this photo is probably not a good idea for your yearbook". Like mother. Like daughter. The photos are not "offensive", but at the same time, any student with half a brain would not be shocked to find that their own photo of similar nature were rejected for the yearbook. This whole situation makes perfect sense; the Spies are just too immature and needy to see it.

all growed up
all growed up

whoever said it earlier about "a yearbook is forever" needs to come find mine because it doesn't mean anything to me now. I couldn't tell you 3/4 of the names of people in my class if they weren't printed next to their picture. It's not a big deal. Let her decide how she wants to portray herself. It doesn't matter to anyone else. And if you think that her showing these pictures makes "every other girl look like sluts" then that's on what you think of yourself. She never MADE you feel like anything. Good for her.

Her mom must be so PROUD! I wouldn't be shoch=ked if Hugh Heffner contacts her for a cover shoot of a new off shoot to play boy... "play pen". I am sure the makers of girls gone wild have her signed up for the next onlie version, we will be seeing more of this girl on late night infomercials i am sure.   It's too bad she feels this is what she wants to do for the rest of her life because after 40 she wont look like this.

Wow reading these comments you realize exactly why freedom of speech needs to be restricted. I mean there is nothing softcore about these people need to grow up and worry about there own Damn selves. And that's not even mentioning the disgusting pigs that have commented.

It wasn't the place for that kind of picture. Hmm. Well lets review shall we. There was no nudity in the picture. She looked a little sexy maybe? If someone wanted to have their picture look "goofy" it would probably be allowed, but god forbid it's sexy right? Stupid America and how uptight we are. Since when is sex so awful? All of the terrible s*** going on in the world that we never pay attention to, but wow someone is sexy or perverted and we are all up in arms? People need to find a better cause to rally for.
