• I have a daughter of my own. I would have serious problems with her having a picture taken like these while she is in high school. One thing she wouldn't be allowed out of the house for any social events for a while. For another the photographer would get his teeth knocked in ( or hers if it was a woman). Has anyone taken a look at the child's face in the first picture? She looks very apprehensive to me.

• Did anyone have the courage to tell her that although she is very attractive, she will not make it as a fashion model. She may get offers for cheescake, mens magazines or could be approached to do porn movies if she already hasnt.  Why wasnt Tyra Banks or Janice Dickinson invited to give their advice on the business, Ie creating a portfolio, living in NYC, going to go sees if she is even contacted by an agency.  While in the Big Apple did she consult the Ford Agency or Wilhelmina for their point of view on her potential?  She may get a few offers after being on TV but the novelty will wear off and her 5 seconds of fame will leave her with reality that she may want to go to collehe or technical school.  This was not a news story and maybe it should have been on DR Phil.  Is Her mom going to get her a stripper pole because she wants one? That was soft porn, not art.  It borders on child porn and could be dangerous for her.  She should put those photos in an album as keepsakes of her youth and concentrate on finding a career that for her ended on the Today show.  The yearbook staff was right.  There should not have been a controversy and it didnt belong on nationwide TV as a news story.  What were the producers thinking?  Now, the mother thinks a lawyer will take the case.  Mayb there is one who will take advantage of her limited financial resources just like this exposure has made her daughter a target.  Both the Today show and these parents forgot to do the research or their homework.  I switched the channel and I do the same when the media exposes me to Kim Kardashian who is not a model or role model who wouldnt be in the industry except for the fact that her mom married well and is loaded.  This is soap opera drama and trash. • it's the kids at this school who decide which pictures are appropriate for the yearbook. as to whether or not they were influenced by faculty or staff members , they say they weren't. her photograph may have been banned because of the rules governing this section of the yearbook when entered in yearbook competition. she can place her photographs in the ad section. which apparently, for a fee, allows boys to go shirtless and girls to wear bikinis. Solicitous? the bottom line, until they change the rules, is if she wants these pictures in the yearbook, she has to pay, just like her peers, for the privilege. whew!

• I've actually had students submit photos with their own children in them! I won't publish them. I agree with this school. I would like to keep the yearbook a sacred object. I'm tired of our kids looking like adults when they don't even make good, adult decisions. I don't understand parents and their need to befriend their kids. • The photos look good for a clothing store, calendar,  modeling magazine or personal photo book...but, I'm with the HS on this one - not for a yearbook.  Next year, someone will want to top that photo and some idiotic parent(s) will allow their child to do it.  It will go from a yearbook to a photo shoot with guys posing shirtless and the girls seeing who can show the most.  Save it for a calendar.  Regardless of what position we (commentators) take, it was the yearbook committee and school that decided against it.  The parents of this young woman should choose their battles, and this isn't one of them.  Where do these parents come from??

While I will say "Shame on you" to those in this thread who are attacking you and calling your daughter a whore, I agree that the photo is completely inappropriate for inclusion in a school-based publication. I'm extremely liberal and believe 100 percent in free speech, free expression, etc, this doesn't fall under that category. Your daughter is a beautiful girl and she shouldn't feel the need to be remembered as provocative. At that age, the majority of girls do not yet realize that the sexiest thing a woman can be is CLASSY. I'm the mother of a gorgeous daughter as well, and I am proud that it is my responsibility to help her make the best choices until she is mature enough to make them herself. Your daughter has many, many years ahead of her in which to utilize and display her sexuality. The high school yearbook is not the appropriate forum for that, and it's our job as parents to teach our children tact.

• I have a few questions. What kind of outfits. Does she wear to school? If there is a dress code does the school enforce it? Do they require a student violating those rules to change clothes or just let it go? To me the solution is this... if the school allows violations of the dress code during class time, the picture should be allowed. If they enforce the dress code regularly then the picture should not be allowed in the yearbook period. It has nothing to do with expression or possible future employment.

The rules of every organization apply to everyone who is part of that organization and those rules are in place lawfully. Even those who employ us are lawfully allowed to impose restrictions upon us. Your daughters rights were not violated and the school did not break any laws in making their decision.
