High Times Medical Cannabis Cup returning to Denver

medical-cannabis-cup-smoking.jpg
For the second year in a row, venerable pro-pot publication High Times will be hosting the Denver Medical Cannabis Cup at the Exdo Event Center.

This time, the festivities fall on the annual 4/20 stoner holiday weekend.

Among the big changes this year: A list of participating shops will be available to all Colorado medical marijuana patients, so they can check out the entries for themselves in the weeks leading up to the awards. Voting is still reliant on the judges, but at least patients will have an idea if the winners are deserving or not.

Tickets are running at $50 for two days, which gets you into Exdo as well as gains you access to the medical marijuana patient lounge, so long as you are a licensed medical marijuana patient. Single day passes sell for $30. You can pick up your tix at the official website, Medcancup.com

Is it worth it? Yes and no. It's great to bring the cannabis community together for the weekend to celebrate and have some fun, but it's also not much different from the other pot conventions that have hit Colorado over the last three years or so. Pretty much all of the same retailers will be there, but most do offer great convention deals on things like glass pipes.

Note that dispensaries aren't allowed to give away free samples. But last year, there was more than enough weed going around to keep the hundreds of puffers happy.

No word on who will be performing at the scheduled Saturday night concert, but we'll let you know as soon as we here. In the meantime, here's the poster for the event:

Wow Charles, you are the definition of a true idiot! Do you have "hater" written on your forehead?

Wonder who is going to "donate" enough this year to win it? These guys have a great model. Go to med states, hold a cup, take a boatload of cash of entry fees, "donation$", and booth$. Then run back to Cali and count their money.

You will notice that the other hemp/kush/whatever "Con$" have stopped coming. People are getting wise to this bs. They hide under the guise of "medical" but in reality, this is a social event where the one who donates the most $$$/swag/etc wins. IT IS A SHAM.

It makes the industry look like a joke, and the MMCs who support it are not helping their own cause. We are facing a new DUID bill, MMC banking problem, patient privacy issues, FEDERAL intervention, etc. We have more important things to do instead of supporting these phonies.

edit: just look at the picture in the article of the two girls smoking. enough said.

Actually there is a standard fee for entry.  Every dispensary enters the same amount of many.  Now whether you'd like to rent a booth for the event or not is up to you.  That, like everything else is an additional fee.  There is no suggested donation amount, its a set fee.  I don't understand why you fools think that people paid more money than others.  Ignorance is bliss though.

LOL! I know many MMC workers/owners/ etc and many more in the business. Word gets around about what "really" happens behind closed doors. Even in Amsterdam, people know it is rigged. It is just a dog and pony show while they take in large amounts of cash then run off with it.

Keep believing that it is legit because "ignorance is bliss"...right?

Wow, that's all you have to say? Prove you know dispensary owners, and prove that you know people you that entered the cup.  they will tell you the same, there's one set fee and a fee for the booths if you want to market your mmc.  You're a clown bro you don't know shit about this industry you're not even affiliated.  Just b/c you pick up a couple of shitty 8's a week and the budtenders know your name does not make you a VIP in this industry.   You're most likely ignorant enough to believe what anyone in a dispensary tells you.  So who's the blissful one?

Looks like I hit a nerve.....fool. I only know one person who talks like that....MR. T!

You have no idea what your talking about fool, I'm a dispensary owner and entered the cup last year.  I know many judges, editors and associates of High Times.  All the meds are blindly judged and tested through various categories.  Check yourself fool.  Just because you have buddies who are budtenders doesn't mean shit.

The tough part is that a traditional medical expo doesn't appeal to a majority of patients, either. Just look at ticket sales for Harborside Heath's "Deep Green Festival", which was aimed at a completely different audience than the High Times Cup. Most of us are fortunate enough to have access to the internet or a local dispensary that has tons of information about medical cannabis. Maybe the need just isn't there.

I don't think, however, that this is a wise use of resources by centers that are participating. There are great organizations fighting for patients and the industry that desperately need funding. If only 25 centers buy a booth and enter one strain, that's $62,500 leaving our state. That's a VERY conservative number, too.

Also, don't be duped into thinking you're a judge if you go around and pick up samples. Their site clearly states:

The HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cups will be awarded by a panel of independent experts based on extensive sampling in a blind tasting. This expert panel will be at the expo on Sunday evening to announce their decisions and award the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cups to Colorado’s top medical marijuana providers.

I wonder how many on that panel of experts are A) Colorado residents or B) licensed card holders.

Interesting take, Jake -- one we're going to make an upcoming Comment of the Day. Congrats, and thanks, as always, for weighing in.

Will Obama Explain His Broken Promise on Medical Marijuana ?

Under federal law, marijuana is still strictly illegal.

Attorney General Eric Holder says the federal government will enforce Federal marijuana laws .

ignorance often inspires the most anger. Never is that ever more evident than on the comment section of a mmj related article here on Westword

"Ur pretty rad?" good to know the High Times "medical" cup appeals to teenagers. That will certainly help the "ignorant people" to understand and respect cannabis as as a legitimate therapeutic treatment. Honestly the MMED should enforce on any one license applicant who participates, participation alone is prima facie evidence of bad moral character. But it's safe assume the MMED will turn a blind eye to their MMIG masters participating.

WHAT A STUPID EVENT FOR MEDICAL PATIENTS TO TAKE PART IN. iT SHOWS THAT THE PEOPLE WHO ATTEND THIS EVENT ARE NOT REALLY MEDICAL USERS OR SHOULD EVEN HAVE ANY OF THE CANNABIS, BUT SINCE THE LAWS ARE CATERED TO BY CORRUPT COPS AND CORRUPT STATE OFFICIALS, THEN ALL THE CRIMINALS WHO WORK FOR THE COPS WILL BE THERE TO MAINTAIN THERE FALSE IDENTITY TO THE PUBLIC SO THEY CAN KEEP LAUNDERING MILLIONS WHILE THE REAL PATIENTS TRULY SUFFER, FUCK YOU LOSERS!!!!!!

Just because we like to grow the best medicine possible doesn't mean we don't need it. Obviously you aren't a connoiseur and patient yourself. You shouldn't judge.

I'm a patient and a connoisseur, but let's not pretend that these events actually put the legalization movement in a positive light for those who don't understand MMJ or its benefits.  Personally, I find it encouraging that these things take place and that people can hang out and try different strains and/or products.  From an objective viewpoint, however, they appear as free-for-all toke fests for unemployed stoners (before anyone jumps down my throat, I realize that this is not the case...chill the fuck out).  The scantily-clad women, party atmosphere, and general attitude of potential attendees do nothing but offend non-patients.  I use the term "patients" very loosely, as the people who really, really need MMJ probably aren't healthy enough to frequent these events.
