The Denver District Attorney's Office has now formally charged James Bradley, 32, with attempted first-degree assault for a bizarre incident involving a hammer attack on a police officer back on December 4.

Why such a delay? No doubt due to Bradley's condition. The officer shot him, and as detailed in the arrest affidavit on view below, the injury likely left him paralyzed.

According to the affidavit, the officer in question was sitting in his patrol car wearing full uniform while parked at 2770 West Evans when he heard a noise, looked up, and saw a man later identified as Bradley swinging a hammer at the driver's side window. The officer quickly withdrew his gun from its holster and fired as the hammer struck, hitting Bradley multiple times.

Afterward, police found a rental vehicle belonging to Bradley. Among the items found inside was a machete. And a document that purported to be the "last will and testament of Bo-Rain Bradley" was discovered on his person, raising the prospect that he had been trying to commit suicide by cop.

If that was his goal, he came close to succeeding. The affidavit recounts a hospital visit by a detective to check on the suspect's condition. The report he received: two gunshot wounds to Bradley's back, as well as "one that traveled from left to right, resulting in a complete trans-section of the spinal cord."

As reported by the Denver Post, Bradley has been in trouble before -- and strangely enough, one of his previous scrapes also involved a hammer. The paper recaps a 2009 chase from San Juan County, New Mexico to La Plata County that ended after Bradley drove his car over spike strips designed to flatten his tires. Afterward, he allegedly dismounted with a sledge hammer in one hand and a beer in the other.

The cops reacted in logical fashion, shooting him with a Taser. But this apparently didn't dissuade Bradley, who reportedly removed the probes, dropped the hammer and brandished a knife before being taken into custody.

That's where he is right now, thanks to a $75,000 bond. He's slated to be advised of the charges against him on Monday, at which point we'll have a better idea of his condition. In the meantime, look below to see a previous booking photo of Bradley -- DA's spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough says one wasn't taken immediately after his December arrest because he had to be rushed to the hospital -- and the arrest affidavit.

Yeah Jail his ass! That oughta teach him. Not like merely paralyzing him for life. Im sure the jail sentence is the part that bothers him.

The address 2770 W Evans, I think that's the Rocket Lounge, that should have been shut down 20 years ago.The Chief of Police should eliminate two positions in the media relations bureau: threes a crowd.I suggest transfering Sonny Jackson and Lt Matt Murry to liquor enforcement and run media relations with just one well monitored Sergeant White.
