A shopping trip Kenny and Kathleen Sanchez took with their daughter led to their arrest for child abuse.

No, they didn't strike her in public or anything like that. Rather, it was the girl's appearance that raised concern. The three-year-old weighed just nineteen pounds.

According to Denver District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough, the arrest affidavits for the Sanchezes are sealed, so the information revealed thus far is sparse.

We know that the pair have two other children, a four-year-old and a newborn -- and while neither of them showed obvious signs of maltreatment, social services has placed them in protective care.

In addition, Kimbrough reveals that the person who spurred the bust was an off-duty law-enforcement officer, who caught sight of the girl at a store on February 2.

She reportedly had visible scrapes, cuts and bruises, but it was her emaciation that was most alarming. How much should the girl have weighed? Figures vary depending upon the length of the child, but this chart suggests that if she was of average height (33 inches), she should have tipped the scales at just shy of 31 pounds -- meaning that at nineteen pounds, she was a little over half her expected weight.

Kenny, 26, and Kathleen, 21, have been formally charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, for engaging in a pattern of conduct resulting in malnourishment and mistreatment. They remain in custody at Denver County Jail, with a $50,000 bond placed on each of them. They're due in court tomorrow to be formally advised of the charges against them.

Here are larger versions of their mug shots.
